The T206 HOF Portraits have always been my favorite sub-set and you guys are killing it with sharing your collections! Fantastic looking cards!
A few of my favorites. Bill |
I'm sure all you collectors are very proud of your Hall of Famer t206 cards. It's true that Lee's auction did produce high prices on the SGC 45's that did get much higher prices. However if you really believe and I'm speaking from experience, that these cards are selling at PSA prices, your dreaming. The PSA registry is much higher than the SGC registry on t206 cards because they have been around a lot longer. The supply and demand leans much more in purchasing t206 cards that are PSA graded. Since these SGC portraits sold for such high prices, the PSA portraits are selling at higher prices. I'm sure you can also see it in other auction houses as well. As a dealer, I'm happy for the SGC collectors, but the PSA collectors should even be happier.

Please post the actual sales data for Joss, Evers, Walsh, Jennings, Tinker and Lajoie portraits in 4-4.5-5 to support your assertion that "the PSA portraits are selling at higher prices" than the SGC cards that were just sold.

You have to agree Nap looks good in a SGC holder. I wish all my cards were in SGC slabs. SGC built their name grading T206 cards.I Don’t understand why a registry guy would care about mid grade Common back T206 cards. But I don’t follow the registry trends.

The monetary value between Psa and Sgc prewar cards (including T206’s) has narrowed considerably over the past few years and deservedly so.
Prewar collectors are now more so than ever valuing the card based on its condition and eye appeal no matter who’s slab it resides in (that being Psa or Sgc) It’s about time!! |

A few more portraits from my main set. I don't think any of these scans do the cards justice but among my favorite portraits!
|
I love the Donovan. He isn't a HOFer, but that color is so unique in the set, it just pops.
|
Here are a few I like because they were found in an envelope postmarked 1911 with a bunch of other EPDG cards that have not see the light of day in 100 years.

You're absolutely right Tony. It was a great auction and I was chasing several but they got too high for me. I ended up winning one (which I over-paid for, but who hasn't!). Very happy to add this one to my collection.
HOF Portraits are definitely not slowing down (SCG or PSA). Love the front of this one...not so much the back :) Bill |
as many of you know, I am a portrait-only collector for the T206 set, and this thread does a great job of illustrating why! Even the non-HOF portraits in the set look beautiful. The thing that attracts me to the portraits is the brilliance and variation of the background color. The Ty Cobb is the most famous example, with the orangeish background getting a lot of love. But you can see it in noticeable ways on a lot of the portraits, where the blue isnt as dark on some of the cards, for example. It is especially noticeable (and my favorite part of my collection) when viewing the fronts side by side in a binder.

As for this post, that Bressy reminds me of mine but with opposite big border. Love this miscut... https://luckeycards.com/bres.jpg |
Agree with you in general Leon that PSA gets a premium all else being equal in registry sets. That said, there have recently been a lot more examples like last night from REA where a SGC 4 Waddell throwing went for much more ($1,740) than a PSA 4 Waddell throwing ($1,050), and deservedly so.
https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=96820 https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=96816 Especially in popular sets, color/registration/centering increasingly means more than the grader and the premium for eye appeal keeps on growing. |
Leon, great Bresnahan portrait. My point regarding value between Sgc and Psa prewar issues though (in this case T206's) is that the gap is much closer now than what it once was in years past.
The cards being discussed may have very well sold for more if they were in Psa slabs. I'm not disputing that. My point was/is that Sgc prewar cards more than hold their own today against Psa when they display nice for the grade. Collectors such as you and I are proof of that as we pay up for the nice stuff no matter if its Sgc or Psa. ;) Now post war is an entirely different story! |
I am looking for nicely centered, good resolution and color PSA 4s of the following.

I don't do Auctions anymore. Except the Blue Chase (red HINDU) shown here, I've acquired these 12 gems (and many more) for my four T206 sets directly from purchases (cash
and/or trade). I've always found this to be the more reasonable way to acquire Sports cards. Since the big price increases in the last couple of years SGC cards have closed the gap on many of the big cards. I see this constantly when I am checking the track record of a certain graded.
I think there is a whole new group of buyers out there that are buying the card not the holder and also buying what is available. They are not aware of VCP and pay the price they are comfortable with. Thanks for the support I get from you, Lee Behrens |
