This is fun to follow Mike. I'm pulling for you to make your money back at the very least.

That being said, with less than half the sets even listed, and only a few sales, I've already got 12.9% of the initial investment back. It'll take some time. but I expect we'll get there, and hopefully have a few PSA subs to boot. 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 45 complete sets listed on eBay 53 to be reviewed 2 sets sold 2 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $7.58 reclaimed (12.9%) |
The last posting completed the 1994 sets...on to 1992!
|
Starting 1992!
1992 Fleer ProCards San Bernardino Spirit 1992 Fleer ProCards Huntington Cubs 1992 Fleer ProCards Madison Muskies The Spirit included Mike Hampton, Jim Mecir, and manager Ivan DeJesus. The Cubs of Huntington don't have any names that jump out at me in the set. The Muskies feature Creighton Gubanich and not much else. 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 48 complete sets listed on eBay 50 to be reviewed 2 sets sold 2 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $7.58 reclaimed (12.9%) |

LOL, I'm glad you could pull Creighton Gubanich out of a line-up...because I sure couldn't. |
Listed:
1992 Fleer ProCards GCL Dodgers 1992 Fleer ProCards Charlotte Rangers 1992 Fleer ProCards Charleston Wheelers The Dodgers had Miguel Cairo on their roster and Red Sox great Luis Tiant as their pitching coach. The Rangers were managed by Bump Wills. The Wheelers had Kevin Jarvis and Pokey Reese. 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 51 complete sets listed on eBay 47 to be reviewed 2 sets sold 2 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $7.58 reclaimed (12.9%) |

But the main reason I'm posting is to say that there is a "notable" card in the Huntington Cubs set - Amaury Telemaco. That name rang a bell and I looked him up on Baseball Reference. He pitched for around 9 years in the majors getting into over 200 games. He was a real stud with a -0.9 career WAR. I also looked into the Madison Muskies set and there is no one who stands out to me, not even Gubanich. I had to look him up, never heard of him before. Good luck and keep posting! |

I've always loved minor league sets...I have bought a LOT over the years...for autographs, for rare/interesting cards of stars, and just for fun. Quote:

A couple more:
1992 Fleer ProCards Charlotte Knights 1992 Fleer ProCards Prince William Cannons The Knights had Steve Trachsel, Matt Walbeck, and Matt Franco. The Cannons feature Ron Frazier, Andy Fox, Kevin Jordan, Tim Garland, and Lyle Mouton. 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 53 complete sets listed on eBay 44 to be reviewed 2 sets sold 2 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $7.58 reclaimed (12.9%) |
Another sale:
1994 ProCards Louisville Redbirds Sold for $3.99 plus $3.99 shipping. Shipping cost $3.35, so minus shipping, eBay fees, and the original 60 cent cost of the set, that's $2.68 profit. That $2.68 pays for roughly 4 1/2 set purchases. 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 53 complete sets listed on eBay 44 to be reviewed 3 sets sold 2 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $10.26 reclaimed (17.5%) |
Someone bought THREE sets!
1993 ProCards Waterloo Diamonds 1993 ProCards Columbus Clippers 1993 ProCards Appleton Foxes $3.99 each plus $5.99 combined shipping ($3.99 plus $1 per set) for a total sale of $17.96. Shipping cost me $3.57. Figure in $2.51 in eBay fees, and the original price of the sets and I've got a $10.08 profit here! So, with six sets sold (and a couple lots from other sets) we've resold about 6% of the lot and have made back 34.5% of our investment. Not a bad start! 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 53 complete sets listed on eBay 44 to be reviewed 6 sets sold 2 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $20.34 reclaimed (34.5%) |
Listed:
1992 Fleer ProCards Edmonton Trappers 1992 Fleer ProCards Fort Myers Miracle 1992 Fleer ProCards Jackson Generals The headliner for the Trappers is Tim Salmon, but the team also featured a bunch of other names...Mike Butcher, Willie Frasier, Damion Easley, Ken Oberkfell, and Phil Bradley. The Miracle don't have any names that jump out at me. The Generals featured Todd Jones. Also on the team was Roberto Petagine...and not a lot of other names I recognize. 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 56 complete sets listed on eBay 41 to be reviewed 6 sets sold 2 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $20.34 reclaimed (34.5%) |
Sold another 2-card lot from the 1993 ProCards Vancouver Canadians set, this time of manager Max Oliveras.

Just had someone buy FIVE sets!
1993 ProCards Spokane Indians 1992 ProCards Gulf Coast Dodgers 1994 ProCards Columbus RedStixx 1994 ProCards Burlington Indians 1994 ProCards Rockford Royals $3.99 each times 5 = $19.95. I combined shipping at $7.99 for a total of $27.94. I upgraded the seller to priority shipping as a thank you for the order, which cost me $7.67. After shipping, ebay fees, and original cost of the 5 sets is figured in, that's a profit of $13.53 ($2.70 per set)! That puts us over 59% of our initial investment recouped, with only 11 sets sold, 3 lots sold, and 41 more sets to list! 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 56 complete sets listed on eBay 41 to be reviewed 11 sets sold 3 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $34.79 reclaimed (59.2%) |

Another sale...from the 1994 Albany-Colonie Yankees set, this time a 2-card lot of Jim Wiley. I made a $1.79 offer when someone watched the item and they purchased.
At $1.79 minus 0.53 shipping and eBay fees gives us a profit of 74 cents. That pushes us past 65% of initial cost reclaimed....not a bad start! 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 66 complete sets listed on eBay 32 to be reviewed 12 sets sold 3 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $38.57 reclaimed (65.6%) |

Bernie Williams was a borderline PSA sub consideration, but not sure it'd be worthwhile. Maybe someone who thinks it'd be worth it will buy the set! The Stars feature Dana Allison, Mike Mohler, Kurt Abbott, Craig Paquette, and Eric Fox. 100 sets 2 opened / singles to be listed 68 complete sets listed on eBay 30 to be reviewed 12 sets sold 3 lots sold $58.74 original purchase $38.57 reclaimed (65.6%) |
Mike, if this helps your math at all...
...unless I'm having a brain fart...and it's entirely possible :D ... ...you've already adjusted for the cost of the sets in each transaction by listing the $58.74 original purchase price. If you're keeping track based on what has been "reclaimed", you don't need to deduct the original purchase price of each transaction because you've already done that. All your other deductions/additions (fees, shipping, etc..) are relevant...but that one should not be, IMO. You've technically, not actually made a profit, until you exceed the $58.74 purchase price...but I think you're closer to that goal then you think you are. Just my "2 cents" ;) , and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, or have explained that horribly. |
Quote:
It's probably the latter...where I'm calling it "total reclaimed", I should be calling it "total profit". |
Found another set with a card that stuck my interest.
The 1993 Procards Birmingham Barons set has a few recognizable names on it, with the biggest player probably being Ray Durham. I was actually after the manager of that minor league squad, Terry Francona. I think Francona is a HOF manager, and figured this would be a fun card to sub. I am likely in the majority on that opinion (PSA pop zero), but the card looks good enough to go into my "future sub" pile. This isn't the first pop zero Francona card I've subbed to PSA...but that's a story for another day! The rest of the set gets listed on eBay, at $1.69 each since they're only one card and not two card lots. I saw this thread when new and have not come back until today. Gotta like that you have pretty much made back your initial investment, minus your time, of course. When dealing with cards, most of my time is considered entertainment, so I'd be happy with whatever I kept from the lot and still getting back every penny I spent! Congrats!
|
Quote:
Yes, cards are entertainment for sure - making back part of the money invested isn’t worth it from a time perspective, but it’s part of the fun. I often look at card purchases of packs, sets to break, etc with a thought to “how many hours will this entertain me…then I compare the cost to going to the movies, out to dinner, a show, etc…usually the cards are cheaper per hour of amusement than other options! |
have enjoyed reading about your project. It's amazing how you're finding a market for these cards. And you are doing better than you think, because your accounting is flawed.
There are two ways to do the accounting. The first and easiest way is to take cash in less cash out. Your cash in so far is about $66. This is what you received from ebay. Your cash out is the $58.74 initial investment. So you are up $7 already. The other way to do it is set by set. For the sets and lots you've sold, you have netted a $55.45 profit. Your 80 unsold sets cost you 59 cents each or about $48 so you have a loss on those so far. The net again is about $7. So congratulations! You are already in the black on your project. And yeah, I think I was trying to be TOO conservative with my math and ended up kind of double-counting the expense. It's crazy to think about how much this little lot will eventually pay back...even if i need to discount some of the sets and cards to get them gone. Anyway, not getting rich on this, but it's been fun to show you can make your money back! |
