Let this be a good case study…..to us the nicer Card means more…..to the investor the Money means more they go where the money is regardless of what the card looks like. In the end it’s not about the card it’s about the money.

My take is that I’ll gladly pay a lot less for an SGC graded card. For me, it is about the card and not the piece of plastic that it’s in. Over time, I think this ridiculous fascination on a grading company making a card worth so much more will go away. It only makes sense if you’re looking to take advantage of a flip right now in the market. If that’s you, then by all means buy a card marked up 50% so that you can flip it for a few more bucks. I’m glad I can take advantage of the situation and buy the nicely slabbed SGC cards that to me look so much better.

The one on right has the tilt and a print spot both of which are eye sores to most but it appears like a more natural card to me. The one on the right will look the part for most collectors but it is slightly toned and not sure what I don't like about it but something feels off. If I had to pick from one I would buy the one on the right.

Left!

I think the one on the right looks better, cleaner and brighter, they both look to have a slight tilt/diamond cut?
|
I like the right. brighter, slightly better print quality. You can see a higher level of detail in the photo on the right. The left isn't bad at all, but the right is unusually perfect registration. Give me that beautiful image every time.

I prefer the one on the left.

They are now in extended bidding and the PSA 8 is at $115,000 while the SGC 8 is at $60,000. Insane, the almost double price for the PSA card makes no sense.

$145k vs $60k. Double plus $25k and the auction still has time

Final score:
PSA 8 - $192k with BP SGC 8 - $93k with BP More people chose SGC over PSA in blind test (although it was fairly close). Regardless, the comments indicate there was no material or meaningful difference between the two. So the flip was worth $100k more in this case. |
You could have purchased two of the Sgc example for what the price of the Psa card ended at.
Insanity……. |
And just to clarify, this card(s) doesn't have a tilt...all examples of Jackie's 52 Topps have that angled top border (dipping down towards the left corner)...it was an imperfection in the original hand-created artwork.
|
I like the card on the right. Plus, there would be no guarantee the SGC would even get a PSA 8 nowadays. Are there still PSA buyers out there who actually look at the card inside the holder?
|
I think both are overvalued. amazed at what Jackie's cards are selling for now. but I did prefer the left one. That happens a lot, SGC is often a big bargain relative to comparable PSA grades.
|
Agreed.....

This shows why it’s easy for some to make large amounts of money off the masses. The majority are told PSA is what you want, so that’s all they’ll value. They no longer think or use basic logic. I hope this way of thinking continues, as I like finding margins. This happens in every market it seems.

Card is undervalued
My opinion is the 52 topps jackie Robinson is undervalued. I know nothing compares to the 52 mantle - but if any card should - it’s this one.
Here’s why. The 1952 topps jackie Robinson is adjacent to the Mick on the high number printing sheet. Same classic set. About the same population in high grade (rare). Neither one is the “true rookie”. Both household names. Both hall of famers pictured while still in their youth. And also each card is just GORGEOUS. Granted, Jackie is not the same caliber of player that Mantle was- but nobody comes close to Jackie’s historical significance. There’s no number retired in all of baseball for anyone besides Jackie. And I think this significance will only continue to grow over time. Despite all that, it seems the 52 topps Jackie sells for about ten percent the price of a 52 topps Mantle. Check me on that but I think it’s about right on average. I don’t think they should be equal - but ten percent? Seems awfully low to me. My two cents. |
I like the sharper focus/registration of the card on the right. However, the print dot on his cap and the print speck that makes it look like he's got a booger in his right nostril are big detractors to me. So, to me, they both have nit-picky issues, I'd pay similar price for either if I were in the market.
If one is offered to me at 1/2 the price of the other, then my mind is made up :) |
I much prefer the eye appeal of the SGC card. I'm just wondering if whoever bought this is thinking this is a candidate for crossing to PSA and doubling his money?
Obviously an expensive gamble and you'd be crazy not to put a minimum of PSA 8 in a crossover attempt. What are the chances this card was already reviewed by PSA and it didn't get an 8? I often wonder how many SGC graded cards didn't get the PSA grade somebody wanted so they got sent to SGC for a "second opinion". I'm not saying this card isn't deserving of an 8, I'm saying how many SCG high grade cards didn't get the result from PSA first and then ended up in a SGC holder? That's why I think the market "devalues" SGC in the same grade. Not that it's not deserving but that PSA didn't feel it was worthy otherwise it'd be in a PSA holder. Collectors enjoy seeing their collection worth more even if they're not planning on selling. |

The back of the cards, in case people were interested in that type of thing.

I always do the 'ignore' approach. There are two cards being compared, but the reality is you're only going to buy one of them (whether it's these second mortgage Jackies or something else), so I'll look at the price tag and examine the individual card to see if the asking price is worth it. When a card sits alone without a doppleganger directly beside it, 99.999% of the 'issues' brought up here wouldn't be readily apparent. It's only the comparison that makes the spotlight burn brightly on them.
|
I preferred the card on the left. I'm guessing that if you swapped the holders, the results would have been the same.
