That Stengel is very nice, esp with the matches intact.

I won this Mel Ott last week. Just waiting on delivery.

I have a few of these in different colors, and one that I got graded, but don't have any with actual matches in them

I only have one, which is funny considering I have over half a million matchbook covers. Always thought about collecting these but never got around to it. I won't be doing so now, as my interest in matchcovers waned nearly 30 years ago.

The one I have means a lot to me, as it was given to me directly from the player who appeared on it. Ray Berres and his wife were dear friends. He kept a cookie tin half filled with his matchbook for over 70 years. They just sat on a shelf and were never touched, so the one he gave me is in pristine shape; the staple never even rusted. Full book. My only wish is that I had asked him to sign it. He would have gladly done so, but I knew his arthritis would give him trouble trying to sign something so small and oddly shaped.

That's a great story. Thanks for sharing it.

I appeared on a baseball card or a Matchbook, I'm pretty sure that I'd have cases of them in my house.

I picked up 12 more that arrived today. These all have matches, most with a full book.

Goodness gracious... I've struggled with posting pictures lately. This one is almost ok. I collect a few. For me, I was interested in them because of their assortment of 1934 Cardinals. Jack Rothrock wasn't having to share space, like he does on the Exhibit card that has him. Seems to me that prices on these have gotten out of hand.

chadeast 04-04-2022 12:28 AM

FYI, I noticed 100+ of these listed in lots of 2 to 5 over at Kevin Savage being auctioned today and remembered this thread.

UKCardGuy 04-05-2022 05:29 PM

Thanks Chad. So it was you're post that drove the bids up at that auction. :o

It was actually nice to see so many lots listed. That was actually the 3rd auction where they had a sizable number of Diamond MBs recently. I managed to pick up a couple of the lots but some of the prices went higher than I thought was fair value.

KMayUSA6060 04-06-2022 03:50 AM

I picked up my first matchbook - a Dizzy Dean - at the Strongsville show a couple weeks ago. Hard to beat the price compared to Dean's other cards, and the image matches some of his most popular cards (like Honus Wagner's Colgan's Chips portrait image). As my Hall of Fame project has evolved, I've really honed in on the idea of showcasing just how popular baseball was, and how it was marketed using just about anything and everything under the sun. Very happy I dipped my toes in the matchbook water. May end up adding one or two more. Great thread, too.

I'm sure there will be more as well. They picked up a huge (almost complete?) collection of these with (almost all?) of the text, text color, and border color variations.

UKCardguy - I like that white background matchbook, I've only seen that version color a couple of times

Some new pickups of mine. All but upside down

JCRedbird 05-18-2022 08:14 AM

Seeing that matchbook of Jim Mooney reminded me of a story. Mooney and his wife lived their later years in Johnson City, TN. That's where I lived for the first 60 years of my life. Mooney died in 1979. In the early 1980's, I got a call one day from an elderly lady who told me she was Mooney's widow. She had gone to a local card shop looking for a card of her husband and the shop owner hooked her up with me. She asked if there were any cards of Jim and I told her about the 34 Goudey and this matchbook. I told her I would give her my 34 Goudey and look for a matchbook for her. We set a date for me to go to her house. I told her I was a huge Cardinal collector. She said she would show me Jim's uniforms, etc. I was very excited! Only a few days before we were to meet, her house burned and she perished in the fire. I never met her but think of her every time I see a Mooney card. Her name was Maude Elizabeth Mooney, but everyone called her "Sweetie".

I've found it hard to find these in nice condition for any sort of reasonable price lately...but I've had a bit of luck.

These 30 more matchbooks arrived in the mail today :)

Nice group pickup. They look good all laying out together. Even a U4 hof Klein

And I agree that the prices have picked up of late. Maybe we should close this thread and not share our passion for this match covers so we can keep all them ourselves :)

Close the thread?....no way. I have ambitions to get as many views on this thread as ooo-ribay Hey, Pennant Guys thread.

Only 1,364,964 more views needed. So let's get posting! :)

The matchbooks are something I haven't delved into yet. But this thread has me thinkin'...
.

Exhibitman 09-29-2022 02:34 PM

They are insidious, Leon. Before you know it, you have a collection.

Today I finished the rainbow for my Rabbit Maranville collection. The final pickup was the green, with all matches intact. My favorite things about the 1934 Diamond Matchbooks are the large checklist and nice little bio write ups.

Congrats, those look great.

And you forget one other possible favorite thing. They typically don't cost an arm and a leg to afford them!

I'm still adding to my Diamond Matchbook collection. 30 more arrived in the mail today. I was really pleased to add Hank Gowdy.

Gowdy is an underappreciated player of the era. The hero of the 1914 Miracle Boston Braves. He's not in the HoF despite being on the ballot 17 times.

Couldn’t pass up the chance to get this little lot of 1934 silver boarder unopened 2 cello packages. My main reason was to get the red Isidore Goldstein matchbook cover, seen on bottom of the photo.

Those are seriously cool. If you don't mind the question, where did you find the cello packages?

nebboy 05-13-2023 05:53 PM

eBay - even know you have to look long and hard, one can still find really nice deals on things from time to time.

I have been putting together all the different variations of Chicago Blackhawks Diamond matchbook covers. In the seven different ‘types’, there are 103 different Hawks, and I’m about 1/2 way there. Anyone have anything available?
