Not sure about lately, but over the years definitely yes. In the 80s at any mid-size coin show some of the flashier dealers would have $500s and $1000s in their display case at a small markup--no more than 10-20%. Mostly just a macho showoff thing; it would be the same guys wearing the gold nugget pinkie rings.

Bill

Nice looking $1,000. Congrats.

Congrats! These are so cool. Would love to have a $500 as well.

And as far as cool bank notes go, get one issued from your own home town bank (or one as close as possible). Not one I have, but my son has my dad's $10 note from the same bank (if memory serves) and prior to the Fed (I believe).

Thanks guys, pretty excited to see it it hand. Seller was more comfortable sending registered so it might take a few days, but more secure I suppose.

As for other notes a local one would be cool, but I'm trying not to create another hobby for myself. Going to stop at the 500 and 1000 bills. For now at least.

I have had no problem seeing them at local card shows from dealers that display money. To be frank, I didn't think they were too hard to find?? But then again, I am older....

Well I have seen one before I suppose, just excited to have one. And there aren't a lot of shows available these days that I'm aware of. There are quite a few available on ebay, but I wanted to get one that looked nice for the grade at what seemed to be a fair price. This one fit the bill.

If you took them to the bank to deposit them today, my understanding is that they would be taken out of circulation and shredded. I am guessing that the bank doesn't do that, but that they send them to the government to do that.

100% correct

At the end of the movie Midnight Run, Robert De Niro opens a money pack and thumbs through a big stack of $10,000 bills. Obviously fake but they looked really cool.

Edit: just re-watched on YouTube and they were $1,000 bills so were probably real! Midnight Run is a great movie if you haven’t seen it. I think this crowd would like it. Charles Grodin and DeNiro are great together.
