I posted my favorite E card in Post #6. But, I have to include this dude here.....the Bris Lord E104 card whose image is actually that of Sherry Magee.

Aaron- that’s pretty beast to see two of the three Nadjas in back-to-back posts!

Bryan - only Cobb and Wagner. But E cards are super underrated and undervalued in my opinion, especially considering they are almost always rarer to much rarer than T cards.

Ted- I love the mislabeled Magee

I owned a half dozen Wagner issues before I fell forever for this one.

Though not officially E-cards, these 1913 Oaks are most likely to have been made by Cardinet Candies, so would be E-cards if classified. Also adding my E221 Bishop San Francisco, matching bookends of E100 type 2 Rapps, and another E222 for good measure

vintagebaseballcardguy 05-14-2020 05:00 AM

Awesome cards guys! I don't think anyone has shared this one. [emoji1696]

Color me embarrassed, but the E card thing COMPLETELY went over my head. I thought e card was for electronic...digital scan of a card :p:p:p

The brain fart is now over, and I modified the pic :)

Unlike the commentator on the backside, I am still not sure about the legitimacy of my example, as the thin paper silhouette and deep purple background portion is pasted onto front, but it is nice to know that my odd little E94 McGraw (Not Lentz) potentially has a 3-fingered friend.

Ed, nice cards! I especially enjoyed seeing your E222 card of Smith because I collect cards of Virginia League Players, and I'm working on this extremely tough, 12-card set, which I doubt I'll ever complete before I croak (I have 9 of the 12 cards - I need Lipe, Revelle & Ryan).

To collectors unfamiliar with the E222 set, the card fronts AND card backs for EACH player were printed in more than one color (I'm not sure how many different colors). Also, the card backs have 3 different border designs AND 6 different type faces - a few players have been found with 2 border designs and 2 type faces. The chance of a collector ever completing a master set of E222 cards is less than slim and none! If you compare the two E222 Smith cards below (the blue-front card is no longer mine) to Ed's card (post #55) and Tom's card (post #24), you will see what I am talking about:

Val,
Here is a thread discussing these, which cards have which backs and possible color combos. Net54 is the leader for info on this series, many more threads discussing these.

ValKehl 05-15-2020 12:06 AM

Ed, many thanks for posting the link to this old E222 thread, which has better info than I provided - I have edited my post to correct a bit of erroneous info. Virtually nothing was known about the E222 cards until Tim Cathey did his fantastic research about 10 years ago and discovered who and what the "A. W. H." represented.

I have found E Card back-runs to be as fun as T206 back runs. Here is my Wagner batting back run -- Note, I am missing a couple that are confirmed and there are other possible backs that are not yet confirmed (e.g., Tango Eggs); also note that the T216 series, which is tobacco (thus the "T") has the same front and thus, in my opinion, is properly included in a back run; and finally note that the Menagerie back is an error with the back of a non-sport issue (DJ has an awesome Cy Young with a similar error back earlier in this thread).

I need to put pics on multiple posts

Here is my E92 Harry Bemis that is missing a color pass. Note the color of his collar is not the normal blue but gray like the rest of his uniform. The brim of his hat is also gray not blue.

That Wagner run is freaking awesome Ryan!

ValKehl 05-15-2020 04:15 PM

Ryan, please don't take offense, but the contrarian part of my makeup disagrees completely with your comment in Post #53 that, "... E cards are super underrated and undervalued in my opinion, especially considering they are almost always rarer to much rarer than T cards."

Kindly provide some specific rationale for the part of your opinion that I have emboldened. Personally, I believe there are easily as many rare T cards as there are rare E cards. Just off the top of my head and based on many years of collecting type cards, but without doing any detailed research, I believe that the rarity of the T cards in the following sets (listed in ACC # sequence) compares favorably with the rarity of the E cards from any sets you care to nominate:

T4 Obak cabinets - T5 Pinkerton cabinets - T204 T.T.T. - T208 Cullivan's Fireside - T213-1 Coupon - T213-3 Coupon - T214 Victory - T215-1 Red Cross - T215-2 Red Cross - T216 Kotton Cigs - T216 Kotton Tobacco - T216 Mino - T216 Virginia Extra - T217 Mono - T231 FANS - T-Unc. Derby Cigars - T-Unc. Plow Boy - and T-Unc. Old Mill cabinets (wrongly cataloged as H801-7, IMHO).

Please note that I didn't even include in the above list the rare cards from the following very popular T sets that most pre-War collectors are familiar with: T205 Drum & Hindu - T206 Uzit, Drum, Lenox, Red Hindu, Broad Leaf 460, etc. - T207 Red Cross - and T-Unc. Ty Cobb with the Cobb back.

I rest my case!

Rhotchkiss 05-15-2020 09:30 PM

Val, I agree that there are many T issues that are as rare, and in some cases rarer, than almost every E issue; T214 and T215s (esp pirate) are perfect examples. I was not clear, as I meant the more mainstream E card issues (e90-1, e101/102, e92) vs mainstream T cards (t205, t206); that said, all those E cards have the same fronts, and thus are likely more akin to t206 with different back variations. So maybe you are right. I guess I just feel it’s easier to find a T card of Cobb, or Evers, or Chance (for example) than an E card.

Well then Leon, if a Derby Cigar is not "a tobacco card whatsoever," then what do you consider it to be? BTW, here's the link to what was my Derby Cigars type card that REA sold for me in their last auction of 2019: https://robertedwardauctions.com/auc...rs-fred-merkle

I was only going by this.

And I should add I don't think anything was perfectly conclusive when discussed.

Leon, thanks for your response and for the link to the old thread re the discovery of the Phila. Athletics sheet of these "cards." The Fred Merkle I gave REA to auction was graded by SGC shortly before the auction, which leads me to conclude that the hobby still considers them to be Derby Cigars.

Fave E Card : E270-2 Tin Top of Harry Welchonce. Only one known for now :)
Hard Luck Harry finished 4th in batting in the Southern Association in 1912. Career .321 hitter in 7 minor league seasons, purchased by 3 Major league teams, went to spring training 5 times, but only played 26 games one season for the Phillies where he hit .212

LOL...you can consider them elephants if you want to.
BTW, I agree, the hobby does still call them Derby Cigars as well as I do. They are indeed known by that....but that doesn't make them into what they are being called. Lots of mistakes like that. We all know or some.
