A couple of new ones this week added to the "modern" numbers of the set...Frank Thomas will be the most modern of the moderns. He's just too cool to leave out. Thank you, Andy Bergman, for the rookie autograph!

Here's an Eddie you can probably afford and a handful of this week's commons!
I love this Eddie Mathews.

More stuff...the Frank Robinson is a sweet high-res negative. I enjoy making the commons as much as the stars. There are really no rules!
Sal Maglie was such a badass, Lol

Final posts for the weekend...what started as a custom order looks like it might replace the current Gibson in the set...I really like this one...the Banks is zoomed in a bit and the colors locked in to the background. That went better than expected. I love young pics of Banks. He got "old fast"...Johnny Bench and Dave Concepcion next week!...still looking for a really good Marichal photo if anyone has one :D

This guy was basically David Cone. Remarkable pitcher for a spell...card turned out exceptionally pretty. Basically, a perfect card for my taste.

Well done!

Very nice to look at. Will some be for sale?

Phil68 05-19-2020 09:51 AM

Thank you!
I do sell on eBay each Monday. Quite a few just sold last night. Recently I have put some on my website at BantyRed.com
the current eBay link is in my sig. The scans don't really do the cards justice as the vintage stock and gloss really make a huge difference in person.

While most will, eventually, be for sale, I enjoy sharing them here for 1952 junkies, like me!:D

Bud played in just 3 big league games. A shortstop, he went 1-7 for his career. He collected a single and scored a run vs. Jim Suchecki at Pittsburgh in a 13-2 Cubs romp April 22, 1952.
Now, he has as many cards as hits!!!

Today's obscure fellow...Louisiana's own Leonard Yochim. Picked up his only big-league win in September of '51 going 7 innings to beat the Braves.
It was good enough to earn Len a spot at #482 in the Banty Red '52 set.
He spent '52 in New Orleans. This is likely because the Pirates made more money when he pitched there! They were desperate for pitching and, although he had some control issue--like most young lefties--he was a proven winner in the Sally and Association. He SHOULD have been in the Buccs rotation... However, he put more fannies in the seats when he pitched in his hometown than the Pirates drew. He wouldn't re-appear in the bigs until 1954, then aged 25. Len was 6'2 and was between 200-215 pounds when he played. He never could get the change-up...or what he called his "fader" around the zone enough to win consistently, but he could be very good at times. He spent his whole life in Louisiana. He passed in 2013 at age 84.

This horizontal one will debut in our July 4th auction. The other is up this week for only the second time (the first copy sold in 2018). There's something about Roy Campanella that makes me feel young and happy. Can't figure it out--but...it's a thing.

I love to share these. What good is artwork if you don't share it? I'm thrilled you enjoy it!

Phil,

It seems to me that you continue to improve on the process! At least in my novice eyes they do...

Mark, Thank you!
Hard to say, really. Sometimes I go for "cartoonish" and other times subtle. My vibe changes. Sometimes I actually make a card kind of...ugly on purpose, Lol.
Like authentic vintage releases aren't all attractive, you know?
Guys like you inspire me to work and try things. Today was the first of the 6-card 1961-1962 Basketball set. It has to have the feel of the year/era AND be attractive to a current collector. It's an interesting balance.

Ken Johnson has a card with Philadelphia in the low # series...here he is with Detroit after the trade in '52...and another pitcher from the Braves...
Interesting to note, there are 4 different Braves logos (distinctly different shading and coloring) used in the original 1952 Topps set...

Spahn...bleach bypass and different logo

Spahn...bleach bypass and different logo. Subtle difference in color separation to the sharp eye. Maybe you can see it? The bleach bypass guives moire separation and allows more defined and subtle coloring...

Bigdaddy 06-14-2020 09:12 PM

Phil, I've noticed differences in coloring also on the Pirates logo. At this moment I don't recall if it is the same color variation on each players' cards (for example, all Joe Garagiola cards have the same logo coloring) or whether it varies on card to card for the same player. Either way, it's no Yellow Tiger.

Interesting. I haven't seen them change on a particular player's cards but, perhaps, they have?
I like the yellow background logo on some. Not sure why I like the Pirates and Browns so much in the set. The colors, maybe? The mountains in the background of some Browns? Who knows.
Do you like certain teams in certain sets? I like the Mets in '64 Topps, for example.

Yessir. 2 different ones. One, in particular, is quite popular! Guys typically request her appearance on the July 4th and Christmas Auctions.

Phil68 06-16-2020 11:12 PM

I got an email today asking for some basketball stars. This is the 3rd person looking for hoops in a year...that's a lot for me. Is basketball THE sport for collectors now?
