Nice one, Kenny. The double-name cards are nice.

I got this Germany Long Chicago Maroons card from Clean Sweep, and looked it up in the OJ book, and it appears to be the "plate" card from the book. In other words, the card I have is the same one pictured in the book as 278-3.

Perhaps someone here could comment on Herman Long -

I could never understand how Herman Long could receive the 8th highest percentage of votes by the first veterans committee for HOF enshrinement and then drop off the HOF balloting after that. The 7 players ahead of him (Ewing, Anson, Keeler, Cy Young, Delahanty, McGraw and Radbourn) have all been voted in. The next 6 players on that list after Long (King Kelly, Rusie, Jennings, Clarke, Jimmy Collins and Wilbert Robinson) have been enshrined.

He died in 1909 so the fact that he received the 8th highest percentage of votes in 1936 means that people must have had a good reason to consider Long in 1936.

Anyone with any ideas why?

Fred, you should start a new topic on Long, so more people will see it. I can only add the little that I've read of his short bio's on the web, that he was a very good defensive ss, mentioned with Dahlen and Glasscock. He may be the best player from the Maroons, as most of them were fringe or obscure players. I would put him in the HOF, but I would also have Dahlen, Glasscock, Rose, Clemens, Bonds etc. in there, so I may not be the right person to ask about the Hall...Rob

Blank Back

Not my thing persay, but a fun accidental pickup....not sure if another Wiltse Blank back has been found before. Some WST of his hat and buttons on the back. Plus it has that cool ghost face, although not as offset as the one that sold a few years ago.

Big accomplishment in itself Dan getting to that point with the Supplements. Nice.

I picked up the AB and EPDG couple more of the Dunn's this week. Slowly getting there.

Stoked to get this pass (I believe it once belonged to a close hobby friend). I'd like to have it relabeled referencing the Yankees/Highlanders' first season. Also wonder if this pass was able to be used for the (first) World Series(?). Don't think I've seen another one.

They did a very poor job of cataloging that. Nice pick up.

Thanks Leon, yeah I was surprised no mention of other landmark events from 1903 in their description. Very happy to have won it at that price.

My first time posting a new pickup on the forum, but I'm happy to share my first T204 -- this of Wild Bill Donovan -- with a TTT Back. From what I can tell, somebody tried to cut out the portrait, and then taped it back into place. Did a pretty nice job too, because it's not that obvious without closer inspection!

The great thing about that back is that you can find a decent Piedmont 150 back any day of the week. Who cares if this one has paperloss. It's all about the front on this one! Sweet pick up.

Amazing 1888 Opening Day NY Giants cabinet. The cabinet was identified from a Sporting Times supplement. Thanks to my good friend Joe Gonsowski for sending me an article from the New York Herald which provided a detailed description of the game and the opening day festivities. There is a paragraph that directly relates to this photograph:

“About ten minutes to four an enterprising photographer set up four cameras and took several pictures of the New York and Philadelphia teams. Managers Mutrie and Harry Wright were photographed with them, and the boys on the “bleaching boards” sarcastically advised Mutrie to take off his plug hat. They also poked a lot of fun at Ewing when he knelt down to be photographed as though that was an attitude to which he was unaccustomed.
Somebody cried as the players stood grouped together, “Where’s Keefe? Where’s Tim?” There was a laugh at that, and another when, the photographer having taken all the negatives he wanted, that same somebody cried, “All right, take your base!”

Also, the article identifies the umpire pictured at left as Daniels. That would be Charles Daniels. Daniels was originally hired when the National League was formed in 1876 and he remained a NL umpire until 1889. He is credited with discovering Connie Mack, and he called the first no-hitter in major league history (as well as a perfect game). This is the only image of Daniels that I have ever seen.

Thank you to Rob and Kevin. It's unusual to find team photos shot at an actual game. To know the history of the photograph, down to the fans comments while it was being taken, makes this a really special piece for me.
