FeBRRRuary Pickups

Also picked up a couple of ‘62 Greenies after the other thread last week piqued my interest. Hey look! Baseball cards that didn’t cost hundreds of dollars!

Very nice, is there a tiny crease somewhere? No way is that a 3 otherwise.

Yeah - there is what looks like a very small, light surface wrinkle at the top left - but I don't think it actually is - in looking at it over and over again. One of those things you have to hold in strong light and twist to see. Maybe some type of light stain that is mostly transparent?

The card has 6+ to 7 range corners, is centered decently, and is bright and new looking otherwise with bold color. Most of the other 4's and 5's I had been considering were more O/C than this one with worse corners. I paid way more than you should for a garden variety 3 - but this is clearly not a garden variety 3. The seller did tell me it was originally a 4 and he got burned on a resub - stands to reason given the new lighthouse holder, and how we all know they are getting tougher if anything on the details lately. Whatever - I really like the card despite the grade. And a true 6 would have been probably at least $200 more than what I paid for this.

Billy Meredith Manchester City

He was one of soccer first super stars. Played for both Manchester City and Manchester United.

Amazingly, this is a card from 1922 - Billy is still playing here at age 47. He'll play two more seasons.
In fact he plays internationally at a record age 45 for his native Wales.

He was responsible for getting the players union to revoke the minimum wage - declaring that average players, and one who were substitutes, should not be paid the same as standout players.

LOL, can't anymore - it's no longer a graded card. :p Curiosity got the best of me yesterday afternoon and I cracked it out. Yes the "flaw" in the upper left could technically be considered a wrinkle, but it's still damn hard to see even holding the naked card. By PSA's own standards however, I still don't see why it wasn't at least a 4.5.

Extremely nice Mantle, congrats. That was the range I was looking at a decade or so ago to upgrade mine, but never pulled the trigger. Now they are way more expensive...

Beautiful card! I cannot believe they graded this a 3! If it were me, I might resubmit that to PSA one (or two) more times. I'm no expert but that card looks like solid 6.5/7 territory to me.
