Nice collection/run of the first Canadian elected to the HOF. :)

Peter, the 65 Yaz is my favorite of his base cards. Nice one!

The 1968 Cepeda is an upgrade for the PSA 9 in my 68 All Star subset. I now have 16 of the 20 card set in PSA 10. The Cepeda is a tough one to find in a 10 as there are only five. Only Clemente and Gene Alley have lower pops at four each.

I picked up a couple 1958 All Star cards a couple weeks. These two just arrived. I guess this will be my next project set.

Finally got my Schmidt RC

This was a tough one to find for me since I really wanted a clean back with minimal chipping. Happy to add it :-)

I'm stoked to have won this in the recent REA Auction for my Pete Runnels collection:

Picked up a few 70s Topps at an antiques mall over the weekend; nothing crazy, but a few of my favorite stars. I once saw Dave Winfield at a card show in the late 80s. I was just a kid, and he walked right in front of me. I swear, I've never seen anyone as big and impressive as he was. Like a Greek god or something. I'm still after his 74 rookie, but I really like his 75 card.

To finish my abbreviated set - the first 310.

Why am I having to deal with all these managers so close to the 'finish' line?

Pretty much completing my post-war rookie run.

Ended the month on a high note. (The line on the right is glare from the holder)

Finished the month out with some really nice additions:

Trying to complete a mid-grade 50s Mantle run, so I was happy to add this 1959 Topps example. Great centering and color

1951 Bowman Nellie Fox goes into the HOF Rookies collection.

Had a separate “guess the grade” contest thread for this. I’m pretty proud of this one. :p It’s a beauty. Great gloss and color! Got it raw from original owner, first submission to SGC. :D

Wow, interesting how similar these two photos are! Yeah, I mean I know it’s his stance, but still...

Congrats to all of those getting closer on hitting their goals for their 52 Sets....the difference between the 52 set and almost every other "mainstream" post war set is the amount of patience required to complete this set (within your own budget).

Down to 31 to go after another ebay bucks promo.....pretty much just tough hi#s left.

Great cards, again, SFMS.
You sure have a knack for finding great looking/centered cards! :)

Thank you Irv.....my knack is better at posting the nicely centered cards versus finding them (I have not posted some of the less appealing pickups)......I do have some purchases I regret for this set and hopefully will upgrade them at some point. Overall, over the past year, I have passed on many cards that lack visual appeal for their grade.

Pray for rain! I have not bought a ‘53 in a long time, but the qualifier (I guess?) made this one affordable to add to my postwar HOF collection.

I have as well. I was just overly eager to add to my collection without giving the cards themselves much thought. :o

Like you, I have also been, or have tried to be, much more picky, so to say, that what I was before.

I have also upgraded a few cards due to creasing/condition, but since I collect mid or lower grade mostly, not many more will be upgraded at this point.

During the late 80s when I first began collecting cards, my old man bought me a Topps binder that had facsimiles of a bunch of famous cards on the cover. Of all of them, I was most fascinated by the 56 Richie Ashburn. I thought it was the coolest card ever printed, and I actually ended up getting his biography from the library shortly after that. After all these years, I finally got the card, and I love it.

I also added a couple Yastrzemskis to the collection, including the glorious 73 Mutton Chop Yaz.

Edit: I found a picture of that binder on the googlez. I wish I still had it.

I remember that album too. At various points I had the '52 Spahn, the '55 Aaron, and the '60 Snider. Sadly NOT the '52 Topps Mantle, lol.

Puckettfan 05-30-2018 09:26 AM

Adam,

I had that same binder but had completely forgotten about it until just now. I kept my 1988 Topps (the set that first got me hooked) collection in that binder. Great memories and great market penetration on their part.

Arrived today. When I first started collecting cards as a kid, I hated this set. But it’s been slowly growing on me ever since. Some of the photos are gems. Given what was considered an action shot back then, I think this one qualifies as well:

Also, how could you not love the cartoon on the back. Seriously Topps this is all you could come up with? LOL. Me too, Harmon. Me too...:)

profholt82 06-01-2018 04:35 PM

Great card. As a Killer collector, I like the 73 quite a bit because it features his classic batting stance. His 74 Topps is a good example as well. I've always said that they ought to call him "The Logo" like Jerry West is to the NBA. But I'm not sure if MLB even officially acknowledges that their logo is inspired by him, even though it clearly is.
