A few Jackie's

I don't have a scan, but I have a funny Jackie Robinson collecting story. Around 15 years ago, I was looking for something to collect, a set I could put together slowly on a budget. I was open to almost any era of collecting, just wanted to take my time and buy them slowly. I thought about it for a while and settled on the 1956 Topps set. I really liked the design, plus I bought a 1956 Topps Jackie Robinson just as a type card for Hall of Famers, so I had a nicer card from the set out of the way already.
I went to Ebay and bought some Pirates cards in a lot of maybe ten different ones. I'm a Pirates fan, so I was knocking them off first. Bought a Clemente off of Ebay as well. I then went to the Fort Washington show (may have been in Reading by then) and bought a small pile of semi-star cards and lower tier Hall of Famers. After getting all of those cards from the show and in the mail, I then went to my safe to pull out my 1955 Topps Jackie Robinson. Yes, 1955 Topps. So basically, I started collecting the 1956 Topps set because I had a 1955 Topps Jackie Robinson. |

Jackie 3/6/46
Really nice items of Jackie. Don`t have too many pieces myself but enclosed is this photo of Jackie during one of his initial workouts in the minors. Wish it had better registration but being so early in his career, couldn`t pass it up.

Great movie. Touched off my effort to collect Robinson cards and premiums. A client at Warner Bros gave me some fun promo items that I display at the office.

A cool autographed snapshot

Just stumbled on this one from eBay. Fragile condition but not often does a program from April 17th, 1947 come up for sale. Jackie Robinson’s first MLB hit (a bunt single to third) and Duke Snider’s MLB debut. Jackie’s debut on Opening Day drew about 26k, but the follow-up only had about 10k in attendance. Today is the 77th anniversary!

Fantastic find, Matt! How awesome.

As usual, mind-blowing item, Al. I'd love to own a Jackie auto on an Exhibit card but most of the ones I see for sale look sketchy.

I believe the top one with the caption closer to the picture, and the J font that drops below the other letters to be the first printing in August 1951. The middle one, with the "Large Name", to have been released in April 1952. And the bottom one, with the caption very low to have come out in teh 1956 - 1957 time frame. Still working on release dates. Doug |
