From North of the border in 1933...This is a V-94 O-Pee_Chee AKA "Canadian Butterfinger" Premium of Burgess Whitehead.....I would upgrade for the centering but I've never seen another one in twelve years....so this is my catch for 2016....on the bright side , it was an easy master set... .. |
Not many pickups in 2016 but this one is in the new collection....
Looking for a great T205 Cobby this year... http://luckeycards.com/pr319ruth2a.jpg |
Favorite Pickups of 2016

My three favorite pick-ups in 2016 for each of my collections. The Schulte SC Factory 25 may be my favorite since it took so long to find, but the Williams Venezuelan Topps and the Salutation Exhibit Hartnett are very close seconds in both rarity and the years spent trying to find examples that nice!

What a FUN 2016 ---- Can't say a particular card, but how about a set !! :p
In January I sold my 520 T206 set (privately). It was a very nice, consistent set that was all Piedmont or Sweet Caporal (of course, other than Demmitt and O'Hara). I went for condition over back variety. It was fun, but it was done. After selling, I thought I might take some time off. That lasted maybe two weeks !!! ;) Decided to jump back in, but this time go for more back variety. Backs other than commons, and some mid-tier. After 10 months of buying lots, sorting, keeping, selling, trading, etc, now back up to 519 (missing O'Hara ….. one day). It's been a great experience with back collecting. I have learned a ton about the set, and have a “no end in sight” out look for the future. At first I thought a third would be cool. The realized that half wasn't so unreasonable. :o Now sit at 75% overall, 60% HOF. :) American Beauty 350 w/frame – 32 American Beauty 350 no frame – 1 American Beauty 460 – 3 Cycle 350 – 19 Cycle 460 – 1 EPDG – 29 Hindu – 3 Old Mill Baseball Subjects – 29 Old Mill Southern League – 44 Polar Bear – 62 Piedmont 460 / 42 – 3 Sweet Caporal 150 / 649OP – 33 (Gilbert please !!!!!!) Sweet Caporal 460 / 25 – 5 Sweet Caporal 460 / 42 – 4 Sweet Caporal 460 / 42OP – 3 Sovereign 150 – 20 Sovereign 350 Apple – 12 Sovereign 350 Forrest – 50 Sovereign 460 – 14 Tolstoi – 24 Attachment 254645 Fun, Fun, Scott  |

I was able to complete my collection of Diamond Stars Hall of Famers (32 cards).
All are low-grade or mid-grade. Stlll, I'm very happy with how they display as a group. I want to thank the people on this board who provided guidance and support on this project. Enjoy the holidays. |
Everyone displayed beautiful pieces of cardboard art here....

Posting 6 cards might be cheating, but these guys really stand out from my 2016: Cobb*2, Jennings*2, Kelly, and Chance.

Picked this up late in the year. Not many out there for sure, and the first card with Joe D. as a Yankee. From the 1936 series.

In the recent Goodwin auction I was able to pick-up the T206 Magee Old Mill portrait, its the only Old Mill Magee portrait graded by either PSA, SGC or BVG and as far as I know the only one known. It also enabled me to complete my Magee portrait back run which includes the Magie something I've been pursuing for 4 years. Hopefully if I have time I will post the run later this week. Here's the link if the image doesn't post properly and you care to see it:

One of these two I suppose.

Brent, I LOVE that Frank Robinson. So well centered. Great autograph too. Frankly, I would even buy that card without the autograph. With the auto it goes from great to spectacular.
AJ, your CJ JJ is enviable. Just a gorgeous card. Kenny, love that Wajo! Great card. |

Not the most expensive item I bought this year but for some reason there's something about this one that grabs me:
1946 Nashua Dodgers team signed picture with Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, Walter Alston, Buz Bavasi and others. Jackie Robinson obviously broke the "color barrier" in 1947, but in 1946 while Jackie was playing in Montreal, Campanella and Newcombe were in Nashua. I had hoped to find a ball signed by that team (to go with my 1946 Montreal Royals ball and 1947 Dodgers) and thought the picture was a lesser option (especially with the signatures on the back, which makes displaying a challenge) but there's something I really like about it. |

I should add, there are some stunning cards listed above. Congrats to all...Val, those are especially nice. You don't seem to be slowing down any!! Quote:

Thanks!

My favorite would be either the Chick Gandil T206 or the 1934 Quaker Oats Babe Ruth Premium. Hard to choose between those.

Graig Kreindler
Nice cards Val and everyone else.
I had already posted, but it is still 2016 and a present (to myself) left under the tree is among my favorites for the year . . . Graig Kreindler never ceases to impress. Deacon White, the best catcher of the 1870s, now joins Charlie Bennett, arguably the best catcher of the 1880s. http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=22025 http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=22029 These are based on their 1886 Tomlinson Studio portraits. If and when a Sam Thompson or Lady Baldwin portrait surfaces, I will be knocking on Graig's door once again. I never thought I'd order a portrait, let alone two, but the quality surpasses all expectations. They are the perfect way to add a little color to an otherwise sepia world. Love it Graig, Merry Christmas All! |
Kevin, Leon & Joe, thanks for the kind words! Joe, your Kreindlers are absolutely awesome!
Leon, the older I get, the more frequently my wife says, "if not now, when?" She has already convinced me to spend the $$ to attend the National at Chicago next year, something I haven't done in a dozen or so years, back when she worked for an airline and I was able to fly for free. (I have, however, attended all the recent, closer Nationals at Baltimore, Cleveland, & Atlantic City.) Is she a keeper, or what! Val |
