I thought I was the only one who liked a nice salt bagel. It's like having the best part of a giant pretzel with a little more substance. Damn, now I want one!

Gregg Jefferies actually had a pretty good career as well.....

Seriously guys I do have some of those super rare 89 Topps Mark Lewis cards. He is such an amazing prospect the card back shows his High School batting record. He hit .545 and is the real deal.:)
Ok on a serious note he is the only player that I remember that had his complete High School batting record on the back of a card. Anybody know of any others? |
i collected pre-war when i was a kid also, persian gulf war. any chance to show off some gems in my collection...another positive from this thread.

Jim Abbot... Signed... WOW!:eek::eek::D |
May I know the asking price of the card? May I also know if the card would have been bought by someone else in that time that is was reserved?
I am curious to know if 10 dollars was a large percentage of the price. I understand the principal of not being wishy washy about your decisions and I abide by that myself, but at the same time I am the type of person that probably would never call someone out for not being able to afford something(large or small) or changing their mind about a deal before money changes hands. I just recently sold a truck and I had lots of people(10 to 15) tell me they wanted the truck sight unseen and they would come on Saturday to pick it up. I simply replied "First come first serve. It will be for sale until it is sold". Needless to say none of them showed up, except 1 guy who did buy it(without starting it none the less). I wasn't mad or upset at any one of those people that didn't come. Doesn't that eliminate any downside to having someone "reserve" a card on good faith? Not to bash any seller that does this, but if you change your selling practice, doesn't that eliminate any agnst from your end of a botched deal? You simply haven't sold it yet, no matter what anyone says and you have no reason to turn anyone else away from a potential sale. Joe |
Also, am I the only one who noticed that both of those Steve Avery signatures look very different from each other?

I remember being similarly enthralled by the college stats on the back of the Monty Farriss card from the same series. I think I had a couple 100 count lots that eventually made the dumpster during one move or another. 30 HR's and 114 RBI's in 242 AB's at Oklahoma State his junior season. <img src="http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/1989/Topps-2001-SCD-SportsFest/177/Monty-Fariss.jpg?id=dec34673-95a1-4b58-b039-04b7096f1d63&size=zoom&side=back"> |
Gang this is a FACTORY set! For those of you who bought in quantity - you are gonna want to buy more. 13000 cards! The book on that is thirteen THOUSAND dollars! Minimum! Kenny, are these guaranteed to go up like the Jordan Mr. June?!

Back when I was getting autographs, Scott Erickson turned us down in the funniest way I ever saw. He walked out of the Kingdome toward the team bus holding a Snapple in one hand and the cap of the Snapple in the other hand. "Sorry guy, my hands are full."

This has been one of the most entertaining threads I have read in my two years hanging around Net54. A kid learns a real lesson, baked goods are bandied about, Don West impersonations thrown in, late 20th century busts remembered. Thanks to all for the laughs.

It really hit home when my entire childhood collection drove away in the back of a pickup truck, and I was starting at $800 thinking "this is my retirement?".
|
50000
I have 50,000 plus cards in my basement from my childhood and I don't think there is much hope of realizing $800 for them. But there is literally no price to be put on how much fun I had with those cards.

Beware dealing with njdunkin1 on the board.

I threw away the vast majority, and I'm talking north of 95%, of my collection of baseball cards ranging from '87 to '93. I hope my decision to do this makes all of you money when you one day decide to retire and sell off your collection. :D
|
I run into crates of late eighties and early nineties cards on sale at flea markets on a regular basis. It amazes me that Topps, Donruss, Fleer, Upper Deck and Score were able to flood the market so completely that an entire generation of baseball cards are worth so little.

She handed me a binder full of 90-91 UD hockey cards and she said these were the only cards he ever collected, and the only reason he did, was because a couple of his buddies told him to. I think that mass buying happened more in those years than any other year if I am not mistaken? |
That was right about the time I took interest. I want to say 1989 Score was the set. Bo Jackson, Orel Hersheiser, Nolan Ryan and Jose Canseco were my guys and so was Mike Scott. It was all down hill from there. I think that's why my e obsession with T206 set has remained strong. Because it is original and will never be truly duplicated. One card at a time. No holograms just the folklore.
