I got this back today and I am very happy to have this slabbed

I don't think PSA knows how to grade those - that's a really nice example and in the range of possibilities it's far more than a 3 - the centering is great, the striker is clean, the staple was removed with no damage - that's a beauty!

That is a beauty! jeff |

Thanks! I have another matchbook and it is not as nice as the one that I had graded. I want to find the 1933 and if I am really lucky a 1934 one too. |
wrestlingcardking,
Are you interested in Nagurski because he wrestled? Another less heralded player from the 30s who wrestled only during the offseason came to mind for me - Father Lumpkin. He doesn't have any football cards, but he does appear in several of these matchbook sets. Storage
Is this way of storing matchbooks a bad idea:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/231538817755...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It looks like the seller folded the matchbooks in order to get them to fit into a card saver. How do others store them? Are there any cases or album pages for these? I don't have one yet, but I missed on my first auction recently: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-ROY-...p2047675.l2557 so I figure I'm getting closer......I bid low not only because of the condition, but with the stubs of the matches in there - I wasn't sure if I should remove them or what.... Any thoughts? Thanks. |
If you like to put your raw sets in binders, use the 6 pocket ones for matchbooks. They work really well.

John I followed your link. The matchbooks haven't been folded to fit into the card saver. They stick out a little at the top:)

Back in my Baseball HOF Rookies collecting days, I was always on the lookout for a Cal Hubbard matchbook from the 1930's (not sure exactly which year it was issued or if there was more than one) but they always seemed to be exceedingly expensive ($1,000+). Was that a particularly tough one to come by?
|
Thanks Larry - yeah they still don't fit that well. Since I often see them flattened out, I was wondering what collectors thought about keeping the striker folded back.
Thanks Jeff - I found some six pocket BCW folders on Amazon and they look about right. I know you're not big into matchbook collecting, do you or anyone have an image of how they look in the 6 pocket binders? The matchbooks seem to come up raw more often than graded and I wouldn't think fakes are a huge issue, so I am leaning towards picking up a few raw - not really going after the set, but more thinking of companion pieces for players who weren't included in the Chicle set since I like the 30s. Phil, I took a quick look at John Spano's GG article from several years back and it does mention: "1933 Diamond Cal Hubbard - Only member of both Baseball and Football HOF, $800-$1000 not quite as rare as ’33 Herber......". I vaguely recall someone posted an image of one recently - I wouldn't be surprised if the price has gone up.... |

There was a 1933 Cal Hubbard Diamond Matchbook that came up on ebay in a lot that closed last week. Anybody snag it? If so, they got a decent price even though it was pretty beat up. jeff |
Jeff, are u collecting matchbooks now?

Jeff, that was you who won the Father Lumpkin? I've been gone for a few days - did you notice the Lumpkin auction was the one I posted the eBay link to in the earlier thread? The first matchbook I ever bid on. As the new owner, are you going to flatten it out? In the listing, I recall it still had a staple and one stub of a match. Nice pickup! :)

I have several matchbooks that still have rusty staples in them but with no matches. I do plan to try and take the staples out and flatten them but will start with a common or two before trying such an operation on Mr. Lumpkin! jeff |
Makes sense - yeah the idea of modifying it scared me a bit.
I had a feeling you didn't notice it was the same auction - no hard feelings about losing :) I actually put in a really weak bid - I think around 12-14 dollars. I'm glad you got it. |
Reviving this old thread, I picked up six of these in complete matchbook form over the weekend:
John J. Welch (pink) Roy Lumpkin (pink) Hank Bruder (green) Dale Burnett (green) Grover Emerson (green) Cliff Battles (green) What would be a fair price for each of those complete matchbooks? Here is Battles: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...attles%201.jpg The dark tint inside the book in this image is a scanner artifact: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...attles%202.jpg Any help would be appreciated. I am looking to move the lot and have no idea what to ask. The only comp I could find was a pink Flaherty full book that went for $210 via BIN on eBay. |
Great find! There was a Chris Cagle that also recently sold for 119. Can I ask where you were able to find these?
|
Nice common examples without matches typically go for between $50-$100 depending on the player. HOFers and some that are very hard to find will go for much more.
I've picked up full books of these (commons) for between $100-$200. So I assume full books go for 50% -100 % more than those without matches but that's an estimate. What do others think? jeff P.S. Still looking for 4 matchbook covers to complete this set! If you have Stu Clancy, Tex Irvin, Potsy Jones, or Maynard Morrison and want to part with them, please PM me. |
Shawther, I could tell you where I got them but then I'd have to kill you.
Thanks for the info, Jeff. I don't have the ones you listed, just the ones I listed. All are available for purchase or trade, BTW, so if anyone wants any or all of them, let me know. Battles is gone. |
