In the school system there is a nationally normed academic test called the Woodcock-Johnson that we use quite often to help determine student progress and for ESE eligibility. We definitely get a lot of strange looks when we discuss the results of that test.

That's a good point. Well, regardless I guess when the time feels right. 256 already sounds like an impressive number to me. It would be cool to track down Howe's descendants and maybe have them dig up a photo of their ancestor so we can have a face to this early collector.

This collection truly fascinates me. I feel this collection could go in a museum.

Very special thanks to a board member who got this one of Howe's cards back with the rest. Words can't really express how grateful I am.

Number 256 in the rebuilt collection.

Beautiful postcards Jim. Rather risque-- a Johnson with Wood.

And then, the Wagner PC shows him standing next to a statue of an alligator holding a pair of lace panties!

I'm a big San Diego Chargers fan, and it just hit me the other day, that three of their players over the years have been (Jeff) Wood, (Danny) Woodhead and (John) Woodcock.

Wood is a natural thing, however...

... and I'm guessing they conduct the tests at Bushwood Country Club? Funny thing is, I'm sure those names were totally reasonable before American slang hijacked them. I think Clarke is safe for now, but you never know!

Some pickups over the past month plus, including a nice N172 "Orator Jim" from LOTG... and thank you Joey for the Rajah of BST.

Not perfect, but decent eye-appeal, and takes care of a rare back for my set. Thanks to net54 member for the acquisition.

Got this T206 Dunn today with a split front. Can't tell if the bottom player is also Dunn, because the background is yellow, but that could be from a color shift. I believe there is a Dunn split front out there that is him on both sides. The yellow in the bottom is a lot easier to see in person, not sure why it is barely showing up in the scan. Must be something with my settings

Ian, I really love your recent acquisitions. The diversity in your collection really knocks my socks off, my friend. You're doing exactly what I plan on doing. I especially love the Rajah and the O'Rourke. I can't remember, but is that your first OJ?

When Joe posted his OJ collection pick ups, I started looking at them seriously for the first time. I'd like to get one here before the year is out, but there's a lot of other things I want first.

Dave, that Wagner is outstanding. That's one of my favorite Wagner cards. The background colors on it are jut beautiful, don't you think?

Runscott 06-06-2014 11:50 AM

I picked up this Fleer Ted Williams strip (bottom right) at the Shoreline show, from Conor:

Card not shown on right, is of Williams and Babe Ruth.

Came today. Borders trimmed off, but not a crease on the image and is as clear as can be :) Sorry for the bad iPhone photo.

davetruth 06-06-2014 02:44 PM

Yeah 'Stache the colors are pretty striking..the old candy/tobacco cards are just so unique compared to the cards I grew up collecting from the 80/90s. Who said you need a hologram or lots of shiny foil or "1 of 50000" stamped on your card to make it something beautiful and special. I've also been blown away by some of the deeper and more vibrant vintage cards that appear as though they have never seen the light of day. Pretty cool stuff!!

Bicem 06-06-2014 02:56 PM

Greg-I just love the Fatimas! Having never held one before, can you tell me the differences between the regular T200s with the Fatima label, and the T200 premiums sans label? How much of a size difference are we talking? And besides the logo not being present, are there any other identifiable differences between the two?

Greg-that Cicotte is absolutely gorgeous!

kamikidEFFL 06-08-2014 07:29 AM

I really love the stuff that people are able to obtain. I wish my wallets were deep enough to jump in on some of these.

Bill: This quick'n'dirty snapshot ought to give you an idea of the difference in size. (Didn't have a regular T200 Boston so used a Washington team card instead. Maybe somebody can post one so we can inspect for differences in the image). You can see that the premium is quite large. It measures approximately 18-1/2"x10-1/2"; the edges were a bit rough and are matted out so I can't be more precise. That's a Moose Skowron autographed baseball to give a scale to the photo.

WOW, that is a stunning Cicotte! I've recently started collecting Black Sox Players and that card is now on my top want list.

Most of the time, you start a project and it turns out to be harder than it seems like it should be. Given that I almost never get access to Old Judges, I figured a Billy Sunday run would take me a very long time. I have always thought Sunday, who became really the first major national evangelist and was a major voice in the ratification of prohibition (sorry about that). Anyway I picked one up in an auction a couple of years back and decided I would put together a run. Jay really helped me out, and i picked up a couple of others. The last one I needed came up in an auction just recently. In fact, it came up in two auctions at the same time so I felt like I got a good buy. I will probably upgrade the Chicago with bat eventually, but just finished up my run in a little over a year without really feeling like I paid too much for any of the bunch.

If you create the scan somewhere between 270-320K, Net54 will upload it fairly large. Anything bigger than that gets rejected, and smaller files become...smaller.

kamikidEFFL 06-09-2014 04:20 PM

So here is number 39 of my set. Finally came in but hey very glad to have it in the collection. Only 9 more left till I hit the half way point and my first goal. Thanks for looking guys

GaryPassamonte 06-09-2014 04:35 PM

Scott- I'm at 300 now, but my images transfer to Net 54 small. I'm a dinosaur with these operations. My process is preview, next I size the image with the box, then scan. With my old scanner, I didn't have to attempt the sizing thing. Maybe that is my issue.

Chris D. 06-09-2014 06:25 PM
