As a pin collector, this is one of my favorite pickups in years -- a 1922-23 Kolb's wall-hanging advertising piece. It's a companion piece to the Kolb's pin set. 7 inches wide. Just got it today.

Scott Garner 05-20-2014 01:11 PM

Nice pickup, Greg! It's in great shape too!

Awesome piece Greg! I was wondering who ended up with that beauty!

Notated as "baseball at the Gunnery" circa 1865. It's difficult to see from my scan, but the CdV shows a pitcher in the center and a batter on the far right.

Just got off ebay 1954 yankees ballantine display plaque to go with my yankee silver tray commemorating 5 consecutive world series. good shape not warped as these are normally found. A little elbow grease and 409 cleaner cleaned off all the stains.

Nice Kevin!

I just completed a trade with fellow board member Randall Hahn.
Here is a ticket stub from HOF'er Rube Waddell's record setting 1904 season in which he struck out 349 batters. Rube was the winning pitcher in the game played on June 25, 1904 at Philadelphia. The A's bested the Washington Senators 6-3.

Waddell owned the major league record for single season strikeouts until Sandy Koufax passed him with 382K's in 1965. Nolan Ryan since set the modern standard of 383K's in 1973.

Thanks Randall! ;) :)

Disclaimer: I don't own this RPPC of Rube and Matty, but I love the image!

I've recently picked up some similar Philadelphia Athletics tickets and comparing the writing on it with Scott's, they appears to be from the same source. I've seen other Athletics and Phillies tickets with similar writing from various sellers on Ebay and other auction sites and was wondering if anyone had any information about their origin. Was a big cache of Philadelphia tickets recently found or have these been circulating for a while? I'm just curious how these things managed to survive. Thanks - Ed

Of course, all six were not--as the affixed label mistakenly states--KIA. Ira Hayes, John Bradley, and Rene Gagnon survived the war.

Here's a FDC from my collection that was signed by them postwar (most likely at the dedication of the USMC memorial at Arlington Cemetery):

Hi Ed,
Actually, I can help.
These tickets originated from a large collection of early Philadelphia Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies tickets of games that were attended by one Philadelphia fan. This collection first entered the hobby in the early 1990's and were purchased by George Kennigsberg (sp?) who at the time owned and operated the Monterey Bay Sports Museum in Northern California.

All of these tickets had the year and score written on the front in pencil which was later overwritten with vintage steel-tipped black fountain pen by the patron.

It's interesting to note that many teams did not issue tickets with dates (year) making it challenging to determine exact vintage. The other thing which is noteworthy about this collection was that the patron carefully pasted these into a scrapbook preserving their condition. All of the tickets were expertly removed from the scrapbook. Some have lined paper remnants, while others are fairly free of paper.

Overall, great early baseball collectibles. I do recall seeing a couple of these tickets from early Babe Ruth pitched games, although he was not the winner in either game. I regret not buying these, FWIW...

I hope this helps.

Great information, Scott. Exactly what I was looking for. There is some glue residue on some of them so I guessed they were taken from a scrapbook. Thanks again - Ed

Hi Ed,
I'm not sure if you did the research to determine what happened in each of the games that your tickets were from?

The second ticket from the top is of particular note.

On 9/25/09 the A's and Cleveland played a doubleheader. In the 1st game, HOF Eddie Plank was the winning pitcher (shutout). The second game featured a terrific pitchers duel between HOF Addie Joss and HOF Chief Bender. Bender and the A's prevailed, shutting out CLE 3-0.

Neat ticket!

Great cdv, Gary! Is the photographer/location of studio identified on the back? I always hope so when I encounter an early photo.

Thanks! I do have some accounts and the boxscores from each of the games. In the clipping I have about that 1909 doubleheader it has Bender beating Joss 5-0 (with CLE making 6 errors) in the first game and Morgan beating Falkenberg 3-0 in the second game. I'll try to attach it and hope it's readable.

In the other games:
5/2/1908, the A's scored two runs on Boston errors in the 3rd, Dygert with the win, Winters, the loss.
8/20/10 Chief Bender beats Irv Young
5/30/11 Harry Krause shuts out Lew Brockett and the Highlanders.
9/6/13 Bob Shawkey beats Fred Anderson, Collins and Baker score 3 runs each and Tris Speaker goes 3 for 4.

Ed,
Looks like you are on it.
FYI, when you posted the photo of your tickets, I was curious what happened in each of the games. 3-0 score was a typo. I meant to say 5-0.

BTW, originating of the same Philadelphia collection I own a win ticket stub for each of these early HOF pitchers:

Addie Joss- 1909 (LP Chief Bender- Game 1) Game 2- Cy Young LP
Eddie Plank
Christy Mathewson-1910 (Win # 242)- vs. Phillies
Rube Marquard- 1912 vs. Phillies
Rube Waddell- 1904 vs. Wash

I picked these up at different times over the last 20 years...

Great stuff!

I attended the Cubs/ Yankees game Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley. There's a table & showcase set up inside the park with game used stuff, signed memorabilia by Banks, Williams, Jenkins etc... They also sell old line up cards that the are taped up in the dug out. I noticed one set off to the side, it was the Cubs vs Yankees from Yankee Stadium from April 6th, asked the price and bought it. There's only one for each dugout. I asked about the lineup cards from the games played at Wrigley (2), they're going to auction starting at $500 I was told.

1944 Marines Baseball Photo Pearl Harbor Hodges?

Picked up this photo of the Marine baseball team at Pearl Harbor in 1944. I know Gil Hodges was stationed there in that time frame, and the player in the back row, 2nd from left looks like him. Any thoughts?

Great photo, but that's not Gil -- way too short for one thing.

#852 in my Baseball Magazine supplement collection.

The top picture is my new addition, the bottom picture is a second Woodling pose that I already own.

There is only one listed in the catalog, so I added to my collection but did not subtract from my want list.

I'm always looking for more, so email me if you have any m113s or m114s that you have an interest in trading or selling (or giving away, insert smiley face here).

I'm relatively new to these boards as my collection has shifted from modern towards vintage. I've found myself targeting some of the more obscure events in baseball history, particularly when it involves something beyond regular games. I recently picked up this baseball, signed by the 1931 team that went to Japan. I'm trying to figure out who the baseball was presented to, but having just the initials makes it tough...

He came from a family that had some high ranking military men, had a college named after his family, so it wouldn't be a stretch to think he would be in a position to get the ball or have a family member get it for him. Maybe not, but like I said, it's a place to start.

That Stromsburg photo is awesome...can you read what it says on the bag the African American player is holding?

Guy W. Green the famous originator of the Nebraska Indians was from Stromsburg and played for them...although I do not see him in this photo. If I did I'd be PM'ing you. :D

Pretty happy with this one. It is a Buzz Arlett game used bat. This is the biggest bat I have ever held. It is 35" and 46 ounces. He was a switch hitter, so I was also happy to see that both sides of the barrel have grain separation and deep lace impressions. I also found an article from 1931 that gave a few details about Arlett's bats. The dimensions and weight match up perfectly. I have only seen one other Arlett gamer before, so this is a pretty cool find.

For anyone who doesn't know, he was considered the Babe Ruth of the minor leagues and was the minor league home run king for many years. He was good enough to play in the Bigs (he did play with the Phillies in 1931), but preferred to stay out West. He spent most of his career with the Oakland Oaks, but also played for the Baltimore Orioles and Minneapolis Millers.

I definitely appreciate the help. I wish there was some sort of data base where one can search based on initials since I image there's a good chance that they used the initials simply to save space and not because he went by those initials generally.

My gut feeling is that the individual was somehow involved with the team since the inscriptions makes it seems like an "official" presentation rather than signing for a random person.

I wonder if there is some way to tell whose handwriting it is...

It looks like Chalmers Gaston Davidson was born in 1907, so he would have only been around 24 in 1931. I'll need to look deeper to see if there's any connection but have not seen anything just yet.

Charles Grant Davidson was a painter, but since he died in 1902 it seems unlikely it was for him. :)

I have had these items for several weeks (Hunt's Boston Auction of Kid Nichols items), but finally getting around to posting some of them. I had interest in all the items relating to Charlie Bennett, a dear friend of the Kid Nichols family. The first item is a letter from Kid Nichol's wife, Jennie Nichols, to Mrs. Bennett upon hearing about his career ending accident. Kid Nichols and family were in San Francisco as he played winter ball. The letter reads as follows:

San Francisco, Cal
Jan 11 1894
My Dear Mrs. Bennett

I saw the account in the San Francisco paper that Mr. Bennett got two legs cut off and it made me sick when I heard it. I do hope he will get all right. Please tell us all about it, how he is getting along, and telegraph us if he is dangerous so we will come home just as soon as we can. Mrs. McCarty (Tommy McCarthy’s wife) read it in the paper and saw it, brought it up to me. Charlie (Kid Nichols), Alice (Kid Nichols’s daughter) and I (Jennie, Kid Nichols’s wife) feel awful bad and I know how you feel. Charlie (Kid Nichols) is going to try and get someone to pitch in his place so we can go home or wherever you are write or telegraph us as soon as you can. I just heard about poor Mr. Bennett this morning and I am trying to write to you but I feel so bad I don’t know what to say, well all I can tell you is to try and keep up and we will try and do all we can for you both. Well I will close for this time hoping Mrs. B is getting along all right. From your loving friend Jennie (Kid Nichols’s wife). Charlie (Kid Nichols) sends regards to you both and Alice (Kid Nichols’s daughter) sends kisses to her dear uncle B and auntie B.

Address Hotel Mirabeau

There were also a couple cabinets of Charlie and perhaps of most interest is a program from the tribute game played in Bennett's honor. The contents are very interesting. The benefit game players would include most of the Boston team, Heavy Weight boxing champion James Corbett and a talented team of college players, a couple of which would later play in the majors. I also have an ticket to this game that I purchased ~5yrs ago from the Jack & Eddie Boyle estate (posted ticket scan as well).

Jay Wolt 05-29-2014 10:58 PM

Joe, those are fantastic pieces, love the ticket
