Lucky Strike Ad of Lefty Grove..... (Happy to have it, but it needs to be upgraded.... LOL)

Some pretty amazing pieces in this thread. Does anyone know if there's a centralized place that would have even some rough pricing info on items like these? I could see it being all over the map, too.

That's a great way BTW to get someone into collecting if he's into Pirates embrace it with cards, FYI there are also some very reasonable UK tobacco sets that have pirates too. Cheers, John P.S. Just make sure it won't turn to Pittsburgh Pirates there's one card that can be kind of $$$$. :) |
Agreed, that Virginia Brights Pirates piece is amazing John. To keep the Virginia Brights theme going these two large advertising pieces (8"x13") were more than likely displayed in a general store to market Allen & Ginter Richmond Cigarettes. A couple wonderful cigarette making gals!! (CJ in pic used only to give you an idea of actual size)

I'll check out the UK pirate tobacco cards. I've also picked up a Pirates brand back with a Chinese warrior on the front for him. That's about the closest I'll come to owning a T215:D!! And I've floated the idea of a Honus "Pirate" as a nice "cross collecting" piece for him. Quickly received the Heisman from my wife on that one!! :D |
Ahh yes T215s not a cheap one either. :)
Tony great Ginter stuff love it! More Ginter goodness.... http://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn...rge/Birds1.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/piojohn...arge/Naval.jpg |

a few counter displays.....

When purchased originally I thought this was a Piedmont counter display used for single cigarette sales, but after looking at it closer I believe it to be a counter ashtray.
Note the strike marks on the side a match would have left. Well loved, but cool none the less. http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...shtraynum1.JPG http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...shtraynum3.JPG |

Some beautiful stuff!
I don't have much, my wife is very anti-tobacco with good reason so I can't really buy big ad pieces even if I could afford them. Tradecards and miscellaneous ads are ok though. I just can't display them. I haven't gone through the old magazines as much as I'd like. Steve B tradecard - trimmed but still nice. http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...pictureid=6575 Ad on the back cover of a magazine. http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...pictureid=5664 |

Some really great advertising stuff in this thread; and, especially some beautiful El Principe de Gales adv. I'll follow these with 10 of my EPDG T206's. Furthermore, I've wondered why this T-brand was not carried over to subsequent issues (T205, T207, etc.) ? Does anyone on this forum have any idea(s) why this is ? ? I'd really love to hear them. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...gEPDGsgc60.jpg.http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...EPDGsgc60b.jpg.http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...zEPDGsgc60.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...MurLorEPDG.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...rLorEPDGxb.jpg TED Z __________________________________________________ __________________________________ LOOKING for this T206 guy to complete my EXCLUSIVE 12 red HINDU sub-set (12 subjects) SHECKARD (glove) . |

Once George became king on May 6, 1910 the pun and imagery lost a bit. Especially since the title is not hereditary and the eventual Edward VIII didn't become prince of Wales until 23 June 1911. He also wasn't as popular as George, and much thinner. So holding over a brand based on a pun that no longer made any sense also made little sense. Just a theory of course. Steve B |
Quote:
El Principe de Gales was the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII. He was granted the title in 1841 as heir apparent to Queen Victoria, and did not become King until 1901. He was known internationally as the Playboy Prince, and the perfect representative for a cigar brand since he was also known to be a heavy smoker. The brand name El Principe de Gales had been in use since the 1850's, pre-dating the future King George V who did not become Prince of Wales until 1901. Upon King Edward's death in 1910, King George assumed the throne, and the brand name most likely lost its meaning as you theorized. |

I had a quick look at some stamp series, and the Canadian stamps of Georges reign are called the admirals, mostly because the depict him in his admiral of the fleet uniform, a theme that turns up in the ads. So the transition was probably an easy one. Both Edward and George were admiral of the navy, a largely ceremonial title that could be held by more than one person, and was occasionally held by a foreign leader like Czar Nicholas. And of the royal family the only one holding the title without having naval service was Edward VII - Something I didn't know before looking it up. This stuff can be a lot of fun, and not just for learning about baseball :D Steve B |

Thanks for some interesting bit of history regarding the EPDG brand. I notced that in the 1911 divestiture of the American Tobacco Company (ATC), the EPDG brand was not assigned to any of the three resulting Tobacco Company's (ATC....Liggett & Meyers....Lorillard). TED Z |

Not sure how this one survived on eBay.... although I'm sure there are more out there, this is only the 2nd Yum Yum I've seen that relates directly to the card issue (i.e., we know that cards were packaged in the cubed tins). When this arrives, I'm hoping there might be remnants of the baseball card advertising band left (doubt it, but hopeful!).
