That Aaron is really a standout example; must be so tough for Mr. Kaline to stand next to him, lol!

Thanks re: that 74 Schmidt. As a centering/no tilt guy, that card has driven me nuts. Alas that one's the best I've come across.

pawpawdiv9 08-19-2013 03:29 PM

totally a Homerun with the Hank and Kaline.
I been searching for a Hank, think i found one..but not as nice and centered as yours. The centering is a $%^&

MattyC 08-19-2013 07:56 PM

Chris-- I feel you on how centering can be so annoying on Hanks; when I finally saw centering I liked, it was on a very surprising grade...

http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...-hank-aaron-rc

Funny thing was, once in hand, it hit my eye so pleasingly that I wound up saving a bundle from what I'd initially expected to drop. Of course that savings was immediately spent on cards.

vintagebaseballcardguy 08-19-2013 08:10 PM

Beautiful Aaron! I have also noticed really good centering lately on a variety of vintage cards in the 4-6 range. These well-centered mid-grade cards represent the best buys in the hobby IMHO.

Could not agree more with that statement. Especially when putting cards in a permanent collection and not reselling, it's like finding treasure (or more cards!) when you expect to pay big for centering, and instead find it on a much less expensive card with say a rough corner. Was just able to pick up some nice 71s of Reggie and Ryan that way; PSA 7s but great centering.

Of course, if funds were infinite, I'd be begging Miller to sell me that Aaron 8 ;) Or at least his 71 Ryan. Or 56 Mick. The list could go on...

By the way, MBM, I'd bet that Aaron could bump to 8.5 pretty easily!

Cool, I never noticed that.

Great cards...those Aarons (my favorite card of all time) are simply AWESOME. The PSA 8, wow. Impressive. I was thinking of grading mine just to see what I would get, but after seeing that 4, I think I'll keep it raw...

Here are some recent 1955 pickups for my new set...all 4 came from a local shop who got some in. The Mays was cracked from a PSA 4 case...and after looking at that Aaron RC PSA 4, I think I would resubmit that Aaron. Wow.

The last card I got was this Jackie card...I have already upgraded this for my set but for the price I couldn't pass it up. I have already promised it to my super excited 8 year old, his first "real" Jackie card as he puts it. It was obviously stapled to the wall...but for $40...who wouldn't pass that up?? I would have frankly paid more...lol.

Great centering and look at those corners...if only, right?? Still a great card of an American Hero.

Nice pick-up Paul! I picked up the 45-46 Minoso and Ray Brown cards from the same seller. He had some beautiful Cuban cards w/ gorgeous fronts and nice centering.

I had my eye on your Dandridge...glad it went to another Net54er (w/ a killer HOF rookie collection)!!

Some great pickups on this month everyone. I just received one more.

Drysdale

Very nice Adam. Great smile there on Don

MBMiller25 08-21-2013 08:37 AM

Adam, That's one of the nicest Drysale rookies that I have ever seen. Where did you pick it up at?

I dont know Matty, I think PSA is pretty stringent on this card. There is also a very small little stain on the back of a card. I don't really care about it being in a 8 or 8.5 holder. I like the card, its what I was looking for in this card, so I am very pleased!

MattyC 08-21-2013 09:58 AM

Well said, MBM. Once it is in a permanent collection, the grade and all that becomes irrelevant, compared to the joy we get from the card itself.

Bottom line is that it hits the eye like a mint card and thus makes it a really great pickup! Very crispy.

4sc had one of their discounts going last week, so I pulled the trigger. There's a faint printers line going down the left side of the card, which probably held it back but I'm happy with how it presents.

Good pick ups Phil,
both cards have a very nice eye-appeal regardless of the grades, specially that
Harmon is just a nice looking card.

A few more recent pick-ups............

MattyC 08-27-2013 07:42 PM

Great Yaz, Hoot, Mick-- this Post War thread has got some life this month!

Landed one of my toughest centering targets of all time; had been holding out for a centered Carew at a good price forever.

I also learned a lesson I will keep in mind forever; saw the PSA 9 Winfield and took a flyer because the centering, color, and corners were so sweet, and the central image was clean. I saw the stray white PDs in the scan and figured I'd find a way to live with them. Lo and behold, I get it in hand, and those dots are so small and unobtrusive. Amazing how a blown-up scan can magnify and in effect overstate a card's flaws! I gotta keep in mind that in-hand certain aspects will look way different.

Great cards Matt! I especially love the Nolan Ryan.

Another pickup for me. Thanks to Chris (pawpaw) for finding this one and bringing it to my attention. Almost done with my team issue/premium photo run.

Dont i get a finders fee? JK. glad to help a fellow member out, wasnt sure what it was, and neither did the seller apparently. Other than it was a team issue, and i knew you had it on your want list.

Haha, I will think about the finders fee. To be honest, I am not entirely sure what it is either. I saw another one that Mantle sent to a fan in 1967 in response to an autograph request, so I assume it was some sort of team, or personal, issue from 1966/67. I wish there was a resource for these team issue photos as I have a handful that I just cannot date.

I guess they come in bunches. A month + off, and suddenly a handful of HOF rookies seemingly fall into my lap. This being the lone post-war one so far. I would've been happy to leave the '55 Golden stamp as my Alston representative, but I'm not one to pass up a nice deal on a pre-rookie minor league issue, especially on a "type" that wasn't represented yet in my collection..

bcbgcbrcb 08-28-2013 04:14 PM

Nice pick-up, Dave.

August Pickups

Finished my '58 set (been needing the Mick for over a year), and put big dents into my '55 and '66 sets (all high #'s). Good month for me!

Wow, go away for a week and all hell breaks loose all over the boards, rookie pickups are going nuts, and ML auction last night was insane! I guess the hobby is riding high right now.

I don't know a lot of you here, but I love these oddball rookies everyone is picking up. Matty, great looking cards, strong eye appeal as usual. I love the looks of that Carew RC.

Congrats guys!

September

Phil--nice cards, but surely you are in violation of multiple forum protocols by posting these in the August pick up thread in September. The fact you may have bought them in August would seem to be a weak defense :)

bcbgcbrcb 09-07-2013 07:53 AM

Sorry, my mistake, I meant to post them in the September Pick-Up thread :)

brob28 09-07-2013 12:54 PM

Phil, I'll start a September pick up thread. You can show those fine pick-ups in it as well, therefore putting the Net54 universe back in balance. Maybe not, though there is certainly a rule against double-posting! :D
