Speechless...just super Jim.

The best mustache on a card ever, I challenge anyone to beat that stache! Jim here is the little known N167 variation you will need to find for your set.

Very excited to add another OJ, thanks Greg.

Bought the book...made a purchase (or two)

After buying The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890) (I know I am late to the party, but it really is a wonderful resource, guys. Thank you for taking the time to write it. If I could do one thing 1/10th as beneficial to the hobby, I would certainly have accomplished something.), I decided to take the plunge and buy a few cards. I decided to attempt a few complete player/pose runs, beginning with Jerry Denny. Welcome to my addiction.

Great California Brown, Rob.
It's been great reading about all these guys in the book. Not only is the book a great lesson on the cards of Goodwin & Co., but also it is a great primer on the early history of the game. Brown is one of the guys I considered collecting. Still not sure who I am going to collect next. Maybe van Haltren? Maybe the players from the Syracuse team (where I live)?

Looking to keep this great thread going. Here's some Hank O'Day poses/variations. Actually, I no longer have the card on the far right - sold it on eBay shortly after O'Day's election to the HOF was announced.

I agree Jay, some gorgeous cards. If we are extending to cabinets, I'll share one of my better images. It also represents the only copy of Bennett that I'm aware of with "DETROIT" not erased from his jersey. I've now studied 5 different N173 Bennett cards and perhaps a dozen of his N172s and this is the only one I've seen with "DETROIT" still present. This would mean nothing to others but kind of neat for a Detroit collector.

cyseymour 07-07-2013 09:27 PM

That Bennett is awesome.

Joe-- that Bennett is truely a great card. It belongs nowhere else than in your Detroit collection.

Joe and Jay,

I really want to thank you both for all of the information that you have given me regarding the N172 cards. Your book is an icon in my home.

I also wanted to post the Stump Weidman (Weichman) - Detriots / New Yorks misspelled card for others to see.

Ted

Thanks for the compliments on Bennett. Ted, that is a neat Wiedman variation.

The scan below represents my newest pick-ups (both arrived today). Can anyone figure out why I'd possibly have interest in these two cards? If you know my collecting focus and have really studied the OJ set, you just might be able to figure it out. Jay Miller is excluded from this competition :)

Are you collecting 0-numbers??

Everyone has posted some great stuff so far... I would but I'm bed ridden. Anyway, this thread in entertaining so thanks, and I hope it keeps going!

In the right ball park, but not exactly. Those two poses represent OJ zero number 0480 and 0509 which bookend the Detroit Wolverine run. The Wolves run uninterrupted from 0481 to 0508. I always thought it would be neat to collect all the zero numbered cards but don't have the budget for such an endeavor when my focus spans outside of just N172s. I'm happy with a run of 30. I'll leave it to someone else to tackle the 1887 zero numbers. The design is classic and the challenge is far more attainable than many other OJ subsets. I'm actually a bit surprised there isn't someone collecting the set in this fashion (at least not that I'm aware of). The zero numbers cover all 8 National League teams plus the outdoor Brooklyn from the American Association.

Matthew H 07-11-2013 08:10 PM

I should have known that! :)

Thanks for clearing it up, Joe.

Thanks.

I had seen the pose (bat at 45), but from 1887 and saying "Capt." instead of "C.", but this one is awesome (in my opinion), since the image is so wide, at least compared to the 1887 version! The only thing holding this card back is some writing on the back...oh, and that it's not his "rookie" card.

I don't have too many of these dudes; anyhow, I don't think Fogerty nor Glasscock have been on display yet.

Sorry, but I don't do PM's.

Anyhow, the N162 Glasscock is part of my Goodwin Champions set. Therefore, it's not for sale.

Louis Schoeneck

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5542/9...c1e4bc5a_b.jpg

This card shows Schoeneck in a Chicago Maroons uniform. Somehow the photo was doctored for this Indy card. The "Chicago" has been removed from the jersey, similar to the way some T213 jerseys are altered to reflect "Traded" cards.

In 1888 Schoeneck played 70 games with 287 ABs for the Maroons before moving to the Hoosiers later that year to split time at first base with Dude Esterbrook after the preseason bust at 1B by Walter Bogert.

Thanks. Yeah, I think it's amazing the amount of detail that went into producing the n172 cards. The Jumbo Schoeneck examples on page 373 of the OJ book illustrate that the Indianapolis captioned cards have "Chicago" removed from the photo as in the 404-3 pictured in the book.

It is a precursor to the way the makers of the T213 series handled this Rudolph card by removing the "Toronto" to indicate a team change.
