A few Mantles

The Robinson I posted is a PSA 5 -- it also has a small stain on the back, in a similar place as the one on your card. I could see your card grading between a VG 3 or a VG-EX 4, so it's not far off from my card. That card just has such a nice, full body pose of Jackie -- classic. |

Nice '52 Mathews, Ted! If they ever made a list of cards that are notorious for poor centering, the Mathews would be right at the top.

Great Matthews RC! One of the best I have ever seen.
Where did you pick it up? |

In my quest to complete my 1969 master set, I picked up these three extremely tough to find 'white letter' rookie cards at the St. Leander's show in California today. A couple are o/c, but not enough to sway me. Got 'em at a good price, too. Not bad! And the 1961 Hal W. Smith was mentioned in a recent thread about 'unknown' scarce cards, so he was sorta stuck in my head. I found this one in pretty nice shape with decent centering in an 'Any Card for $1' basket. Niiiiiice!!!!!!! |

I think this card is THE SLEEPER of the entire '52 set: single print, high number, the only recognized rookie card of an all time great player, the last card in the set and prone to all the inherent condition problems, AND one of the most difficult cards in the whole set in terms of centering. Given all those variables, I think it is undervalued. |

I guess I'm on a 1953 kick. Just picked this up.

Thanks Rob. That card is awful sweet for a "4". I always thought Red looked so scrawny in that picture. They list him as 170 lbs. at that time, but that might have been generous.

Already have one but could not help myself with this one:
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8cc011b1.jpg Anyone have any ideas on cleaning it? It is a glossy paper, so it would seem as if a slightly damp cloth might remove some of the lighter stains.... |
1951 Wheaties Mantle
Chris:
Nice pick up. However, this set always bothered me. The SCD Standard Catalog says it is " reliably attributed to General Mills, POSSIBLY intended to use as a Wheaties premium" My problem is this, why would anyone put out a Mantle item in 1951? He was a rookie who only appeared in 96 games and hit .267. Maybe the year is off and it was issued later I know others here on the board would have the original Tyoe 1 photo and be able to date it. Is the photo from 1951 or later? Just because the same photos were used in Wheaties other issues, does not mean much as these were for the most part team issued photos that can been seen elsewhere as well. Also seems strange that these did not turn up in the hobby until much later than 1951. Any other ideas if this is really what everyone thinks it is? Fred |
Thanks Jeff. I read somewhere that the source of that information was a General Mills executive. There are some strange things about the set though, I'll give you that. Looking through the population report, I get the impression someone had a stack of these somewhere that just surfaced fairly recently. 35 have been graded and 30 of those are roughly in the same condition.
Mine definitely looks like it has had 60+ years of wear though. |

Don't know if this should be here or in the Memorabilia section. May try to post in both.
Anyone ever seen this? NEAT! BTW, I contacted Bob Lemke and he said: "No, that's one I have not encountered. I certainly would have added it to the catalog "back in the day." |
