When I was a boy, my dad gave me his 200-ish card collection of 1959 Topps. They were my favorites for that reason. Ten years ago, I finished off the set and gave it to him for Christmas. Even now, I know which cards were his originals. I'll always love that set, and it will stay in our family forever.

As for now, I'm focused on the T201's. I just picked up the Cobb, and WaJo is my last superstar. After that I'll start picking off the commons. I have the 54T set complete, a near complete set of cards from the members of the 1908 Cubs, and am nearing a set of all the players from the Merkle Game.

Familytoad Sets

I have sworn off being a set collector.
That's after I finish all of my sets of course.

Working on completing my 1953-1980 Topps Run. (i have less than 600 cards to go)
I am picking away at low grade 52 T, finished 50B and nearing the finish line on 51 B.

Those are low priority sets though, as I am a prewar collector in my heart.

I am collecting/ upgrading T205 Master set (221) after slaying the base set of unique fronts. Not many left but Hoblitzell (no stats) is stoopid!

The set I am most interested in recently may never be complete... e210-2 York Caramels.
Tougher cards than some folks realize. I finished the Type-1 so its a natural progression. Contact me if you can help , I have half the set now.

But for a real collecting goal, I was going to collect a "playing years" card of every HOFer whose career was primarily post 1900. That was too easy, so I added a few older 1800's players and then decided to try and get (ahem) ALL the mainstream set cards of HOFers 1900 to 1980. Yup, really stoopid.

Fun though, while it lasts...:p

Btw- Murcerfan...um that's an awesome list! Best of luck!

Had a run of 53 to current topps, tough times had me sell off most. Now working on finishing a 52 topps, need about 75 cards, mostly high numbers. Played with 1915 cracker jacks and t207s for awhile. Need about 35 PSA9 or better for my 78 topps set except for a PSA8 #400 all 9 or better. Never have been real focused, will pick up most anything I feel is a deal.

I am currently trying to convert my raw cards to psa graded.

Also "The super monster set" has beat the $hit out of me. Have/had over 2400. Now I am going to settle for a 520 graded set. Time will tell.

David,

Nice accomplishment! I will settle for completing this set once>

I'm at 522 in the T206 set, so I've gone as far as I can. I'm working on sub-sets now, like getting a Merkle with every possible back.

Sean,
Great that you are so close to finishing the 65 set. I get a kick out of searching for commons cards like Joe Nossek because as a kid I probably got one in every pack. There was always one guy you had 20 of, I particularly remember that in 66 it was Phil Roof. I could have wallpapered my room with his cards.

Nice selection of sets everyone! I'm working on:

1966 Topps (birth year) 92/609
1953 Glendale Tigers (3/28)
1978 Topps PSA 9 Tigers Team Set (1st year collecting) 14/29

Looking forward to knocking some off my lists at the National this year!

Tom, in the 1965 set it was Gary Bell for me. It seemed for the first month that every time I opened a pack there was a Bell in it. Good luck with your set.

frankb22 05-26-2013 05:52 AM

Nearly five years now on t206 but with disclaimers of course.

For the whole set there are 10 or less possible complete sets due
to the Doyle card so would like to see all those T206 guys add their
disclaimers. There will be no Doyle for me (not interested) nor Wagner
(most overvalued card in the hobby) Everything else is up for discussion
although the next two I'd nix would be Demmit and O'Hara. Magie I
would consider and Plank may just not be worth the resources. They will
certainly be the last two if they ever make it, Plank being completely
legit but just too expensive.

I am gradually working my way backwards. I am down to three cards for the 1954 Topps set (sadly, they are the Aaron, Banks, and Kaline rookies). That set is mostly VG to VG-Ex. I am mostly working on my 1963 and 1967 sets now (Ex to Ex-Mt), but I am dabbling in 1955 Bowman, 1956 Topps, and picking up the few cards from the early 70's that I need to finish my run back to the 60's. I had a fairly nice collection of graded cards, and a few months ago I bought some nice raw cards. I decided to get them graded, then at the last minute, saw that I was about to spend $1300 to get cards graded that I already had. I decided to use that money to buy other raw cards and then I decided to sell my graded cards and start over. My goal is to have 1953-present in baseball, 1948-present in football (Topps and Bowman sets) and eventually tackle the playball sets of the 40's.

In 1969 the 1st series I must have gotten an Al McBean in every other pack.

For me it is the 52 Topps set all 407 cards well centered in PSA only (I prefer PSA for all cards from the 50's and up)....so far I have 20 of them including 4 very nice high numbers.

Then I will go after the gray backs and other variations of this set.

Adrian,

Same goal for me with the 52 Topps, but I am not sure that I will collect the gray backs. I am somewhere around 20 away from completion. Re: Pre-war, I am only 1 card away from completing a T200 set (missing Cleveland).

5 yr chase to complete my AB T205 set. Want a nice Matty AB really really really really bad. Also plan on finishing the Pied 42's and Cycle SP's in the set. If any one has a Cycle grant or Dahlen FS let me know.

AMBST95 05-30-2013 01:06 PM

I'm working on a T206, E210, E95, and R319.

The E94 master set and the D311 set are within "reach" eventually. The T210 set unfortunately is my white whale. It's fun to work on but my hopes of ever completing are next to nada.

Being the oddball I am....

I have 2 that I am after. The H891 1887 Tobin Lithographs (I have 3/10) and the F50 1928 Yuenglings, which I just "officially" started (I have 6/60). Had I the cash, I could have bought most of either sets recently, but then where's the fun in that? :D

EGreenwood 05-31-2013 05:52 AM

I know that I will see 35 Goudey, N3, and N30 through completion. The rest of my partial sets, we shall see.

mr2686 05-31-2013 06:59 AM

I haven't collected cards in some time, but I'm now coming to the point in my autograph collecting that I only collect a few things, so that will open up the door for me to start collecting T205's probably next year. Not too big on condition or variations so Poor to Good will be fine with me as long as they display well. No rush on completing the set but I'm guessing about 10 years. Geez I love the look of those cards.

rhettyeakley 05-31-2013 10:21 AM

-Zeenuts 1911-1938 (all sets)... not actually realistically possible as there are nearly 4,000 different cards produced, more if you include the tint variations found in some years (1915 and 1922 specifically). I am at about 2,100 different and luckily I have a ton of the later (easier) years on my wantlist as I've always focused more on the 1911-23 years... that being said it like going after 27 different sets at the same time. I have some I'm getting pretty close on but have yet to actually finish any of them...

sets closest to completion...
1925 -need 2
1922 -need 6
1923 Sepia -need 11
1923 b/w -need 20
1919 -need 22
1926 -need 22
1921 -need 25
