Ok, I did a bit of comparing, and the hat area is unusal, but not as odd as I'd thought. The image being tilted made it look worse. Straightening it out helped.

Using Craigs scan and copying out the hats.

There's one of the small differences. The red hat and the card on the left are similar, the middle one is different. The dark area on the hat is one of the things I mentioned earlier, that looks like a scuff that's been colored over.
(Try it with a modern card that's on white cardboard, like an allen and Ginter. Scuff it with a bit of sandpaper then color over the scuff with a red marker. There should be a dark spot)

The card is still a puzzle to me. I think the other red lines are probably factory, but the hat has been colored with marker.

I'm glad you bought the other one showing some red. It was overpriced for the condition, but as a pair with the red hat card it might be better.

What would also be interesting would be finding out if the hat outline is related to the series. Gap on 350, no gap on 150?

It is possible that the red on the uniform is factory, but the red on the hat is not. I will throw the one from ebay under the loupe when i get it.

The red on the hat, being real is a hard pill to swallow, but what keeps me in the middle is the uniform.

I almost wonder if some or most of the cards, because of the such small amount of red, never got a red pass at all? When dealing with the printing press, waiting for everything to dry, cleaning down the press, cleaning the printing plate, then resetting up the press, then rerunning the lot took quite some time to do and the guy running the press some corners or made a mistake? Especially if it is barely even noticable.

Steve, what do you think about the extra red ink on this Beckley card?...Craig

mrvster 04-21-2013 03:57 PM

Craig....

That looks like a felt tip red marker did that:confused:....need a loupe to see if there is a dot matrix pattern.....altho I don't own a loupe, I see these Damn cards in my sleep and can usually pick out anomalies from a mile away:D

A great example of overinking. If there's too much ink it's got to go somewhere when the sheet gets pressed between the impression cylinder and the blanket.

And really similar to this one.

It looks to me like these last two scans are registration issues on the red pass (not "extra ink"). See how the red overlaps the black borders on two sides, and fall short of the black borders on the opposite two sides? When things don't line up, anomalies occur. They manifest thesleves in different ways. The red is meant to blend with another color and give a specific tone and effect. When the dots are mal-aligned, it gives a different effect.

The Bush looks over-inked. The OP's card looks like someone wrote on it with a felt-tipped marker. JMO

My guess is extra ink AND bad registration. Combine the two and it stands out like this, but it's hard to say for certain from the scan.

I understand the use of "black light" to detect florescence, but what is the purpose of green and red light?? Dave

red and green

Well....I couldn't think of any reason I shouldnt do red and green also, because i had those colors as well from the one I bought at home depot.

Figured...more is better in this situation right?

...or in OTHER situations.

Seriously, I think this confirms the hat is inked by some other method than the printing process.

It seems obvious with the naked eye, occording to the scans, but these really make the pen strokes stand out. Again, I have never held the card and examined it, but this seems obvious. I could be wrong.

Edited to add: The jig jag pattern in the middle of the hat is a technique I have used in my profession to try and blend things. This is one of the things that stands out in my mind.

interesting

interesting. well im leaning on agreeing with you. i definitely wanted to hear what you said before i said that though.

Red Uniform

Just got the other card i bought from ebay today. The red on the hat on this card is real and so is the red on the uniform.

The original card is a mixture of real and colored. The hat has been colored and the uniform has occurred due to over inking.

New pictures are posted of the new card. More will be added shortly from the Iphone:
