Net54 is the closest thing (aside from emailing) to social networking that I do. I can't even understand all of that hashtag stuff :o

I have no desire to ever go on FB although my wife will on occaision. I do love You Tube though,,,,I can find all kinds of great music and interesting alternative news to watch.

Not at all. There are two sides to this discussion. I believe social media is a useful tool and has found it's place in our society. If you don't want to use it, that's your choice. It's not the devil, it won't rot your brain, and it isn't just for 13 year old girls.

Rich, I appreciate your conciliatory tone. We should all be friendly on the board. That said I personally believe that technology has dumbed down our society a little bit. I think the good far outweighs the bad but I see the effects every single day in my own home. It makes us lazier in many respects. I think we can pick and choose technologies that help us and we don't have to use ones we don't want to. This board has changed 100% over time. If anyone wants to see the s/w we came from, which is ok but quite antiquated, they only need to look up on the far right of this screen and click on the Non-sports forum. That is our old s/w they still use. We might install facebook and twitter etc....over time, on this forum, but I don't see the need right now. Although I will say my wife kind of smiles when she sees tweets from this board. I think a more pressing issue is looking at the BST to figure out if another spot is needed for T206 only. I am still undecided on that that have stated my thoughts in the other thread. Technology is good and everything evolves. I really like this board software and am very happy we made the change several years ago.

Thanks Leon. You do realize that these exact words were probaby used in the 50s to describe the radio, the 70s to describe televsion, and the 80s to describe video games. I believe social media is just the next step in our evolution as a society. It hasn't dumbed us down, it's connected us to each other even more than we were before. We get news faster now, we are able to stay in touch with friends who live hundreds of miles away. My business thrives on a healthy social media presence.

Rich- I think you proved my point about things making us lazier. For my (older) generation we actually remember when we had to get up to change the channel on the TV. We remember when phones were on a cord. We remember when we had to write letters, in long hand, to communicate. I agree with you 100% though. I think we are on the same page. My daughter is on a choir trip right now. My wife just looked at her own Iphone and is tracking where my daughter is by tracking her Iphone...as they are traveling on a charter bus. I like technology however I think, like many other things, I embrace it slower than most. In due time maybe we will have F book and Twitter for this forum. Stranger things have happened. If it makes our hobby or this forum better, and doesn't hurt anything, then why not? I am open minded but a bit slow :). And here is a Wags to match your Evers...It's all good my friend...and we all share a common theme in a love for baseball!! (though I am hurt and can't play right now)

I understand where you are coming from. Sort of.

I have a FB page but never post anything there. I have several younger family and friends however that continually post details of their life I don't need to know. The ex-wife of a former partner posting daily about her infatuation with her new beau. My step daughter posting weekly about her keeping up with the Jones materialistic life style in Southern California, etc. The negatives of Facebook outweigh the positives in my experience.

Then came texting. I am 65, my hands are big, I have neuropathy from chemotherapy and cannot feel a thing and cannot work with small tools. Texting is physically impossible. If someone wants to tell me something, they should not be afraid of the response, and just pick up the damn phone and call me.

Texting while driving at freeway speed is another problem, not for me, but for the guy or gal in the next lane who swerves into me while texting. I would hate to have texting be part of my obituary.

I opened a twitter account as well, but have yet to find anything worth tweeting, nor do I understand many of the tweets I have seen. I sincerely hope that no one is following me on twitter. I do however see the utility of twitter in organizing flashmobs and the like. Now that's progress. We've come a long way, Baby.

I believe you're right, in the end we do agree. I love this community of collectors here, the amount of information is unbelievable. However, I will welcome the day when Facebook and Twitter (expanded from it's current presence) are an integrated part of how we all interact on Net54.

For the record, I'm not nearly as young as you all might think. I turn 39 in June. I had a phone with a cord, a TV with a dial, and a radio with an antenna. While that might seem young, my old knees remind me every day that maybe I should have picked a different position than catcher for all those years I played baseball...and later softball. :)

Two years ago our National table was next to the Panini set up. With all of those young guys video'ing their pack rips on the smart phones it was like one big constant flash mob. It was sort of entertaining. They were having fun so that was a good thing. We just kept playing with our pre-war cards and watching them. It's all good.

Rich, I am not going to go back and read your initial response to my 'flame' comment, but I have read the comments by others that were posted afterward.

Texx is completely correct - I took your words exactly as he did, as belittling. I have been involved in computer technology since the time when we programmed using punch cards. I have the latest technology at my fingertips at this moment, and could tweet, blog, or anything else...right now.

So, no - I'm not ignorant of the advantages of moving out of our caves (I even recently replaced my candles with light bulbs and upgraded my fire pit).

With some good things come bad things as well. For instance, I love the moves forward that we've made with non-technology (equality, freedom of speech,etc), but I cringe when I hear the torrent of 'F' bombs on the radio, in the coffee shop conversations...everywhere. Is that progress?

It's a similar thing with all the social media. I often see two people sitting next to each other in a bar, coffee shop or restaurant, having a discussion. One is obviously animated and excited, but the other gets a phone call. He drops everything and talks until the more important person on the phone is through. Or he gets a ring indicating that an email or tweet has arrived - same thing - the person in 'real life' drops in significance.

I think that's poor behavior, and I think it's directly related to the effects of social media.

I'm currently sitting in a coffee shop. If a friend were to walk in and sit down next to me, this laptop would get shut and I would not respond to phone calls, emails or anything else during the period when that other person was present. I can guarantee you that this is not true of most of the other people in this coffee shop.

Now, does what I said in this post mean that I'm "not seeing the big picture"? Perhaps, but I see enough of it to move forward while not losing the valuable aspects of life that I've learned from the cavemen who proceeded me.

Also Rich, my post above wasn't meant in any way to be an attack. I read your posts toward the end of this thread, and they all seemed reasonable, so I added my thoughts. I would hate for anyone to think that I'm burning whale oil and calling Leon on my crank-phone to have him post for me :)

And whale oil is expensive. My suggestion would be to crank up the Model A and head down to the General Store. There has to be a cheaper type of oil you can use, and one that won't anger PETA. :D

Each media has it's own merits. I enjoy Facebook to keep up with far away family and friends, twitter for real time media jabber during a ballgame, Net54 and the like to follow my collecting and sports discussions.
