After consultation with Frank :) I have determined that I am a "Drifting Hoarder" in his classification system.

Does your insurance cover such consultations? Have you met your 2013 deductable yet?:D

Definite bottom feeder. There's something that I really enjoy about a ratty
t206. Says the same guy who enjoys the unrestored class at car shows. It namely means I don't have the funds for graded cards or a restored car.

Bottom Feeding Drifter who Churns Crackers

The Drifter - Has focused goals that once met may refocus in a new goal resulting in the disposition of the old goal .

The Churner - addicts with some level of budgetary constraint ................. collectors who frequently buy high and sell low.

The Bottom Feeder - whose best card is only slightly better than his worst, Fills empty binder sleeves faster than a locomotive to complete sets .

The Cracker - self-described liberator of cards entombed in plastic cases designed for their preservation. Also known as The Feeler

Bocabirdman 01-26-2013 05:02 AM

Another day dawns without a Hard Core Soul Sucker stepping forward. I guess that is to be expected. They spend all night praying the castle walls hold against the villagers with their torches and pitchforks. With the new day, they retreat to their coffins to avoid the sunlight.:D

The Bottom Feeder Manifesto

Bottom Feeders of the World unite. You have nothing to lose but your cards, and they're not worth that much anyway. Thanks for stepping forward after the creation of your true category, which was shamefully neglected in the original list. The Elitists can run, but they can't hide. We know where you live, that big house on the hill.

When I got back into the hobby a couple years ago, I considered being a strip card collector until I looked in the mirror and realized that taking my clothes off wouldn't help at this stage of life:D

I think you forgot a category-The Historian, which I wager a large number of people responding would add to their titles.

I am definitely a newbie. Just trying to gather as much info as possible from these boards. I also enjoy checking out lots of scans to see what cards/sets that are most interesting to me.

Welcome to the board. There are plenty of guys here that will show you all the scans you can handle, for sure. Beware, this place is highly addictive with no known cure.:D

Time to check in. New Category.

I realize that I have become a churning upgrader, which is a hybrid not in the first post.

bottom feeder

90% of my stuff is low end, however, I do have a couple of nice cards (to me they are nice)

but I know there is now way I'll be able to afford most of the stuff I've seen posted on these forums.

egri 10-17-2015 10:55 AM

I am a newbie/churner, although I guess the first one will wear off after a while. Frank, I noticed you didn't have a category for people whose single-minded focus on one project drives all other collecting thoughts from their mind, which more or less describes me. Is that because the associated therapy costs are too high to contemplate?:D

Louieman 10-17-2015 12:32 PM

Is there such a thing as an "Elitist Bottom Feeder?" Only low end stuff, but the best looking of the low end, and only if I've scrutinized the hell out of it to the point that I find it justified to have...but again only with low end

pencil1974 10-17-2015 12:44 PM

Investor/Drifter.

Try to keep the ones I like but then sell many of the ones that don't fit into what I think I'm collecting at the time. Have a huge pile of 1800's-1940's that don't say Ruth so I end up selling those but can't let all of them go for some reason. But will sell anything to buy the whales on my list.

mrmopar 10-17-2015 12:50 PM

I suppose the three that best describe my collecting interests are Hoarder, Drifter and possibly Hobby Investor to some extent.

These are the three I was going to go with as well, although not a true hoarder as I have sold a couple of cards to fund other purchases.

I have yet to achieve a long term collecting goal that I've set for myself, although I do intend to complete my Mantle run one of these days, or years.

Rather lame, reviving your own nearly three year old thread.

JustinD 10-17-2015 04:36 PM

No question...hoarder.

The only thing that could separate me from my cards was a two year cancer fight and having to clean most of the collection bare to supplement my disability check.

Now just getting it all back bigger and better than before. :D

Although I have to admit I love being "the sniper" too.

ullmandds 10-17-2015 05:59 PM

I was a type collector...then a set collector...now I'm mainly a ruth/cobb/louisianian/yankees/yankee stadium postcard/n43/miller collector...with one foot out the door!!!!

As far as a net54 member...I'm a bit of a wise guy...who doesn't contribute much!:D

EldoEsq 10-17-2015 06:01 PM

I am a hoarder....you can't be a hoarder hybrid...hoarders NEVER SELL ANYTHING!!!!

I used to be probably 5 of the choices, selling, flipping, changing interests...one thing I learned is that my collecting choices change every couple of years, and I regretted many of my sales as my taste would change back. I would now be paying 2x-3x for cards I used to own!!!!

NEVER SELL ANYTHING!!!!

RTK 10-17-2015 06:02 PM

I would say hoarder but small time.

sreader3 10-17-2015 07:29 PM

The Researcher -- Wants to know everything about sets he presently collects -- production/distribution history, relative scarcity of fronts/backs, variations, pricing, etc. -- to the point where acquiring the cards is secondary to acquiring information about the cards.

trdcrdkid 10-17-2015 11:17 PM

Like some others here, I'm a combination of the Hoarder and the Hobby Investor, with a bit of the Drifter mixed in. I have various hobby interests, of which I tend to focus on one or two at a time, but I seldom complete a goal before shifting to something else, and I never totally abandon a collecting interest. This goes for trade cards and nonsport tobacco cards as well as baseball cards.

shernan30 10-19-2015 05:11 AM

Well, I'm a combination of a Hoarder, Drifter, and Churner. Although the Drifter side of me is starting to move away. Its taken some time to get my bearing on what I'd like to see out of my collection. I'd say I'm there with my Columbus set, but may be adding a Youngstown set to that very soon.

As a Hoarder I have a very hard time selling anything even if its not a part of my active set lists. As a Churner I do find myself moving some cards to cover the hole I put in the bank account because of emotional acquisitions. There are at least 2 Net54 members that I seem to always buy from even if my budget say NOOOO MORE this month :eek::D:D.

Paul S 10-19-2015 10:12 AM

Ex-Collector here, for all the reasons cited and a few more. One day, when I am pared down and hopefully a bit more solvent, I hope to again buy a few when my Ex brother-in-law straightens-up with me...........he's a hunchback.
