This was actually the first non-eBay auction I've ever bid on. Thanks to a certain card being in this auction (the T3 Tris Speaker) and the fact that Al C. was running the show, I registered and won four lots. This was the key card I was aiming for, and I couldn't be more pleased (my max bid was actually a bit higher than the winning bid, so from my limited experience LOTG is an auction house I can trust)...

Rudy Strejc Collection...

I had 85 lots, 83 of them sold! Some came in lower than expected, others way above. In the end, I'm very happy with the results and truly appreciate Al's expert handling of the collection.

My family is grateful to this community for the strong showing and we're happy that the collection is passed on to those of you who will cherish the cards as Rudy did.

This was a fun auction to participate in. I was fortunate to win the T211 Red Sun cards from the Rudy Strejc collection. Thanks for offering these.

Postcards are on FIRE lately, they don't fall under the radar anymore!

You got that right. Jim Thorpe has always been one of my collecting favorites. There was a raw 1912 "Thorpe returns to Carlisle" postcard on ebay for the past week that I would have loved to have had. I put in a $402 snipe. In hindsight, I guess I was foolish for thinking I could get the postcard at that price. The postcard being raw prevented me from going higher, but I just got crushed by three other snipes. Final bid: $823.55.

I was happy to grab the four T80 Old Mill backs from the Rudy Strejc collection.

I was the underbidder on this card. Had a high snipe of $813, and thought it would never come close to that. Apparently someone wanted it worse than I.

Gracias, Chris and John. Can't wait to see the Speaker in person. It should be easy to see past the wrinkles on a 100-yr old card. ;) All the best to y'all.

I was very happy to add two more 1911 Zeenuts (tough pose variation and a tough single), great auction Al!

I did my research on the postcard, and could only find three others that have been sold in the past through the various auction houses. There was an "authentic" one that went for $450 before the BP, an "excellent" one that went for $900 before the BP and a raw one that was beat and sold as part of a lot with a Thorpe photo that went for $3xx, IIRC.

I knew what the postcard was when I saw it, just from being a Thorpe fan. I was shocked to see it show up on eBay. In hindsight, my snipe was woefully insufficient. But i was kinda nervous about it being raw. I coudn't find anything about the postcard ever being reprinted, but I am cetainly not as knowledgeable as many of the other posters on here. I am a mostly a low-end collector, and I was gunshy about getting in too deep.

The postcard did start at $199, but I wonder if the seller (a postcard dealer) really knew what he had. Seems hard to believe such a nice example would sell raw if the seller knew the rarity of what he had.

Baker price did not surprise me, earliest card and extreme rarity, heck... kinda seems like a bargain for what it is.

bcbgcbrcb 02-04-2013 10:21 AM

Anyone care to fess up that they were the buyer or consignor of the Baker postcard?

Bicem 02-04-2013 11:45 AM

I was neither for the record.

I was the consignor. I had a considerably larger snipe on ebay and feel the card is worth what was paid in LOTG. How many are out there? No one knows but only 2 (including this example) that I've seen. So you have the earliest card/postcard of Baker with 1 other example known. Doesn't seem crazy to me to pay $1100 for something like that. I think the buyer got a good deal.

I also don't think ebay is the do all end all for judging prices. In most cases, postcards that sell on ebay are BELOW market value. This card is one that transcends just postcard collectors and branches into rookie HOF collectors and HOF collectors in general.

Let me just say that there is a reason I went with Al. He knows his stuff, presents it well. It translates to good prices on those items that might need a little extra care and explanation.
