I was very pleased to obtain this original 1936 press photo via eBay earlier this week.

It's a shot of DiMaggio, Tony Lazzeri, Dick Bartell and Frank Gabler at a San Francisco Seals exhibition game in early November 1936, not long after the World Series between these competing players for the Yankees and the Giants.

Not a great shot of DiMaggio but still a photo of him from 1936 and back in SF after his first year for the Yankees and, personally, a nice item to add to my growing Lazzeri photo collection.

Not sure why but I seem to be on a particular run of DiMaggio photos at present - all from the late 1930s, mainly 1936 or 1937.

Mystery HOF'er

This is cropped from a larger photo I purchased. It's a HOF'er - any guesses?

This was just too much fun not to do.

Nope. It isn't going to be easy, but there is at least one clue in the picture.

What is the clue you were referring to?

His jersey. In retrospect, I guess that's obvious.

I picked this up on eBay today. There are a number of other 1914 issues remaining from the same dealer in case anyone is interested. Does anyone have a sense of what a copy of Sporting Life from that period typically sells for today?

My wife and I went antiquing on Sunday and stopped by an antique mall in Hagerstown MD. There was a cabinet with something’s my wife was interested in and on the bottom shelf in the back of the cabinet I saw this. I have seen these before and I saw there was a photo on here last week about movie props. There was also one that sold on E-bay recently for a high price. I jumped on this and went home the big winner.

That is an incredible pennant.

GrayGhost 01-29-2013 12:16 PM

So thats where that amazing pennant ended up. If you got the Dough, you can play in the show.

Scott, I'm just a meager blue-collar man. No cash, was a swap only. Happily, this thing will hang in a beantown man cave, for life.

Nice trade! - So is the seller happy with your wife? ;)

Ladder7 01-29-2013 03:26 PM

I guess "swap" is an amorous term nowadays. Yes Paul, He was ecstatic, well... 'til the third day.

*Incidentally, she's my Everything. Thirty year anniv in a few months!

  • August 5, 1920 Mid-Week Pictorial with Babe Ruth cover photo and two interior pages of Ruth photos
  • 1952 Baseball HOF guide with Ruth on cover - had tucked inside, a 1933 newspaper photo of Ruth and Gehrig
