"There's a great Cobb in Mastro's new auction."

prewarsports 09-21-2012 08:35 PM

Already said before but when people say

"LOW POP"

It makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit, especially when it is like a 1916 zeenut graded a 2 just because only 3 cards have ever been graded of that player.

peterose4hof 09-21-2012 08:44 PM

As a former store owner the words I didn't want to hear were, "I used to have all these cards as a kid, but my mom threw them away." If I heard it once, I heard it a million times.

E93 09-21-2012 08:49 PM

From a seller: "I paid ..... for it."

When I was living in Nepal if a shop owner started down that road, I would cut them off and say, "If you tell me what you paid, I am walking out the door and never returning." Once they resort to that, it is almost impossible to go lower and often the number is not true.

on ebay, "+++++++++++"

I've never understood why PSA and SGC don't add those to their grades. ;)

An oldie, but a goodie (if you like fingernails across a chalkboard):

ME: Why so much for this card? It's a 1.

Dealer: But it has NM corners.

----

You didn't see that go for half of what you paid on Kevin Savage Auctions?

WillowGrove 09-22-2012 08:26 AM

A big +1 to whomever wrote..

Let me check the price guide.

So true and yet rarely true, both at the same time.

a few of the ones that made me chuckle-

"My wife made them all float"

And on the guy pulling out a smartphone to check VCP, a guy did that to me at the last national. I had a T213-2 in a 5 holder (very rare, well, .....not really but sort of high grade ....anyway).....He checks VCP and sees exactly when and where I bought the card he is haggling on. It was like $225 and he saw my markup was $17.....I told him since he checked it we can now negotiate up since he knows I wasn't making squat. He bought the card.

Nice ones so far guys!! I knew this would probably be an amusing thread....and ever since the Goldin thread I can't get "You'll GET A MCQUWIRE ROOKIE" out of my head....da** it.

Worthless information, such as "only 1 of 4 at this level, with only 7 graded higher."

Who TF cares!?!

dabigyankeeman 09-22-2012 04:24 PM

I hate when friends that know nothing about collecting say to me, "Your collection is all MINT, right?" and then they look down on you when say no, and i cant get them to understand that if my collection was mint it would be worth an insane fortune and I would have had to be Bill Gates to buy all those mint cards.

Also how i love it when you see a card advertised with the person having a feedback of 3 on Ebay and he says "I know nothing about baseball cards and he is selling a Goudey Ruth or something similar".

Non collector friends saying anything like..............................

"You collect baseball cards right", "I have some I'd like you to take a look at"

In 20+ years I have been told this about 1000 times and it has NEVER been anything but Griffey rookies and 1987 topps or other worthless items like this and I HAVE TO BE THE ONE to tell them they are not worth anything and to save them for their kids!

GoldenAge50s 09-22-2012 06:57 PM

Asking a dealer about a card on your Want List:

"I've been bringing that card to this show for over 10 yrs and I just sold it 5 minutes ago".

Oh yea, I had all those when I was a kid....

wolf441 09-22-2012 08:18 PM

PSA 10 GEM MINT......on a T206 Wagner reprint.

and an off topic one that kills me: When I tell someone that I'm running a marathon and they ask "Oh, how many miles is that one?".

4815162342 09-22-2012 08:32 PM

On an eBay listing for a raw card: "PSA 10???"

calvindog 09-22-2012 08:37 PM

"PSA 4 but it's really under graded. Looks more like a 6. Oh and I don't have a scan."

CW 09-22-2012 10:13 PM

"Please keep an eye out for my stolen collection..." or anything pertaining to stolen collections. These types of posts made me move the majority of my collection into the bank, and it always sucks to hear about a collector having his cards stolen.

4k6 09-22-2012 10:16 PM

Not even if I email you for a scan? Can you tell me whether the card is well centered? Is it gorgeous? Beautiful?

Is this my last chance to buy it before it goes to eBay?

Are you going to send it to Goodwin if it doesn't sell here?

Bump?

Bump?

Bump?

Pup6913 09-23-2012 12:43 PM

When a seller charges $5.99 for priority shipping and you buy a few cards and ask for combined price. "We don't combine shipping on cards, sorry". Then it shows up with all cards in a bubble mailer, first class, no dc or insurance, all for $2.35. Then they ask for positive feedback.

Yeah and the look on their face is somewhere between 'are you sure' and 'I think I gotta take a shit' - oh well, I dumped 20k cards from that era...

+1 I'm thinking - slip and fall off a really high mountain peak, that even 20 year olds would have a hard time climbing...when I'm 90.

Incredible for the grade it's just got a stain, off center, paper loss and maybe some trimming.
