Cabinet photos were in their infancy in the late 1860's and these photos retain the red perimeter line that was typical to the CDV's that preceeded cabinet cards. These cabinets were produced by Kimball Bros. of Corcord N.H. All of the players are identified (there are a total of 11 cabinet photos of different players) as well as their positions. One of the players is Howard Kimball, quite likely one of the "Kimball Bros" that produced the images.

Hey Scott, If Michael wants to add my group to his "earliest card" collection, he's welcome to it for a small percentage of what he's asking for his CDV set!

Cool Charles Hall Tomlinson Joe! My son is named Charles Hall and he may look similar to that Charles Hall in twenty or so years! My wife got a kick out of that... Thanks for sharing!

Cool Imperial Cabinet of Hamilton Matt, I've never seen it before...

Rob, Those Kimball Bros Cabs are sweet as well Thanks for showing them.

1999???

Hi Ken,

"1999"? I know... I just cannot help but feel that there is a great story hidden within this photo. I & others have all kinds of ideas, but have not been able to corroborate any of them.

The best I can do is I have found a match on the Policeman's belt buckle "CCP". I have found a photo of a Cook County Police or Chicago City Police officer with a very similar uniform and a match on the buckle.

Now though, I have begun to wonder if it has anything to do with Illinois and the "CCP" for some other state...?

slidekellyslide 01-09-2012 12:28 PM

My guess is they were playing a baseball game in the year 1999. I guess they thought in 100 years baseball would be played between men with guns and the umpire would have to be a cop.

I Even... Gun Collectors...

I even went as far as signing up on a Gun Collectors forum and asked if they could provide any info on the guns. (Hoping for some sort of clue?) They were very helpful but it led down a dead end road.

Interestingly, those guys were intrigued by the (guy with sign) buttoned up pants leg. Debating whether or not a drive chain could be on the left or right side of a motorcycle or bicycle.

One fellow stated the he thought the photo was taken at West Side Park in 1899??? I cannot find any pictures of West Side that match...

You can see his pants leg and the Cycles in the bottom photo.

Here is a photo of the gun!

That appears to be a Stevens Tip Up. Also known as a "pocket rifle".
They had removable shoulder stocks, so they could be used as a rifle or a pistol.

Rob, nice cabinet! If Pete Conway, which I believe it is, it dates to just before he was picked up by Detroit (8/5/1886). The comparison portrait you show of Pete with Detroit would date to either late 1886 or just before the start of 1887 season and was taken by Tomlinson Studio. I've never seen the full portrait you've posted, only the oval cutout found on the 1887 team's "Champions of the League" composite (attached below). Could you point me to the source for the full Conway portrait with Detroit? Thank You.

Thank you Rob, I was surprised to see that portrait and even more surprised to learn of Rich Adler's book on U of M baseball. Some real neat information in the first couple chapters (see page 25).

I have a Barry that I can't locate the scan for
Plus I don't buy the paper mounts, so it's a marathon at this point

Here is a Jake Beckley O J cabinet and a late 1800's cabinet of an unidentified player. Does he look familiar to anyone?

GaryPassamonte 01-23-2012 12:55 PM

The OJ book lists no Beckley N173 cabinets in private hands, with only 1 known in a museum collection. Is this example a new discovery?

Gary,

In September 2010 I had a thread about the Beckley cabinet that I have had in my collection for over 20 years. Sorry I'm not sure how to attach that thread but typing in "Beckley cabinet" in the search will pull it up.

The man with the bowler hat and walking stick is definitely Sam Wise. I have a cabinet from the same session so labeled by Tim Murnane.

The image from the Farmer Brothers cabinet photo was used as the source photo for the woodcut illustrating Fred Wood's bio published in the New York Clipper on 02-Jan-1886. Based on the photographer's stamp, I believe the photo was most likely taken in 1885, when Wood played for two Hamilton-based teams.

The image from the Arthur & Pailbric cabinet photo was used as the source photo for the woodcut illustrating Jack McGeachey's bio (spelled McGeachy in the paper) published in the Clipper on 13-Sep-1890. It most likely dates from 1886, when he played for the Detroit Wolverines.

Both appear to have been correctly identified.

GaryPassamonte 01-24-2012 11:27 AM

Thanks, Russ. I missed that one.

Joe_G. 01-24-2012 07:10 PM

Some great late additions to the thread.

Here is the old post that discussed the new Beckley find (thanks Russ):
http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=127480

I'm thrilled to see Bob Richardson posting. Jay Miller brought it to my attention, we were both surprised. Great to have you posting, not sure how I missed that you have 20 posts dating back to May of last year.

Lastly, great to see positive ID on Mike's cabinets. The "man in business suit" cabinets with claims of being a baseball player often end in disappointment.

Great cards all around.
