I'm pretty sure that was the determination - we talked about that photo for quite a bit back when I found it. I later sold it...and bought other things. That's the way it goes.

I hit an antique shop back home in Michigan a few years back when I was initially attracted by a photo of Dizzy Trout. It was signed at one point but the signature was so faded the only way you could tell was to hold it up to the light and you could see the indentation on the photo. As I recall it was priced at $120 so I passed. I then saw the Amos Alonzo Stagg photo which was priced at $18....SOLD! I'm not a big football collector but this was too cool to pass up.

Russ, How big is that Stagg photo and is that a real autograph? Yeah most people associate Stagg with football. He never played pro but he was a big name in college baseball....lead pitcher who took Yale to five consecutive championhships...1886-1890. I did a story on it which revolved around an incredible cabinet photo of him and Jesse Chase Dann, link above.

Yup... it's true. Here's some more info on Stagg as it relates to baseball, as well as a killer statue with him as the subject (sculpted by the renowned Bela Pratt).

Carlton - The photo is an 8 x 10 and yes the signature is real. I later got a JSA cert to go with it. In person you can really see the ink pool up from what I'm guessing was a fountain type pen.

I have never seen nor heard of another out there as of yet. I believe that this was a presentation piece for a Topps Banquet.

It's a 10K gold Hamilton Automatic, and she may run a wee bit fast but I don't care. The watch face is emblazoned with "TOPPS AWARD" with the trophy dead center. It's very intricately done by the factory and beautiful. The back is engraved with "TOPPS FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICA 1969".

I would love if anyone actually knew anything about this. I would love to know the provenance of who this was actually given to. I'm really not even sure of the sport honestly. It seems like Topps used the phrase all-america more for football, but I am grasping at straws. I have thought it may be even an award for the best college player. I just don't know, maybe one of you does? I just know I love it and lots of people ask about it, it makes a good story.

I missed this thread originally. Never seen the watch-wow!

There used to be college All American Baseball Players. I assume one of these ten first teamers received that watch at some point:
P Larry Gura
P Burt Hooton
C Bob Williams
1B Mike Walseth
2B Dick Gold
3B Les Rogers
SS Bill Stein
OF Bob Long
OF Paul Powell
OF Larry Pyle

Wow...unbelievable finds. Here are a few of mine. Regrettably.....I don't own some of these beautiful pieces anymore. The Rookie Gehrig EXHIBIT was accompanied with the Sisler and a lower grade Ty Cobb EXHIBIT(1927). Within the same week I stumbled across the 1928 World series Game 4 ticket. The others are also nice finds. All these pick up were over the last 2 years and I consider them finds because the costs to purchase was 1/20th of the market value today.

Wow!! Kevin, I don't know where to begin, but that Duck Web for $20 is incredible (they all are).

My best flea market finds came last year. I found a Joe Jackson Zinn Beck bat lodged in between two wheels of a trailer. I paid $3 for it. That same day I found an original stadium seat from Boston Garden. Then later in the year I found a beautiful Lou Gehrig store model bat for $40. All three items for $83.
