A couple new Eagles pickups

Great pickups guys.
I added a few pieces to my Eagles collection recently. The first is an early Philadelphia Eagles gamer, being worn by Ernie Steele during the 1946 to 1948 era. Shows fantastic use, with huge team repairs. The next piece is an Eagles oddball piece: its a Johnny Hero doll in its original box dressed in a Philadelphia Eagles uniform.

Kjjavic,

I just wanted to comment that I am by no means even close to liking the Eagles(Steelers fan), I really love seeing your collection, it is awesome.

Special Kudos on your sports room.:)

The following three Indians postcards, circa 1954 (the calendar in the second PC shows August of that year), are interesting to me. Though I'm not a fanatical collector of team-issued Tribe PCs from that era, I will pick up ones that interest me. The backs of these are identical to those of the team-issued variety, but I don't think they fall into that category. I've solicited opinions from a couple veteran postcard collectors I know, but we've been unable to reach a consensus. I'm still trying to figure out the identity of the guy in the suit. I have ruled out Joe Jackson.

Glad to add this one to my collection of radio and TV tickets!

I just got this today. It's a 1973 TCMA postcard signed by all three DiMaggios with full JSA. I'm hoping to frame it with my trio of DiMaggio '41 Play Ball cards.

Kellogg's Box with 1972 Kellogg's Grove card on back

I picked this up yesterday. It's a box of Kellogg's cereal from 1972. It has a picture of Lefty's 1972 Kellogg's All-Time Greats card right on the back. I know this is not vintage, but I thought some of you might enjoy seeing this. I had never seen anything like it before.

Oh yeah, who amongst us isn't Jonesin' for a Kelloggs Danish Go Round? No wonder that brand ended up in the branding graveyard....

Love the graphics of the girl though- she absolutely looks like 1972.... Looks like she just stepped out of the Brady Bunch.
Marsha, Marsha, Marsha.... :D

slidekellyslide 03-19-2011 12:19 PM

Brad, that's an awesome box...I moonlight as a cereal box collector...that's definitely "vintage" to me. :)

Rob, I wonder if the guy in your postcards is a Cleveland Radio/TV guy? Was it an ebay buy? Perhaps the former owner has a clue?

sayhey24 03-19-2011 01:07 PM

Love that Kellogg's danish box -- I collected these cards as a kid, but got all mine with pretzels -- I don't recall ever seeing this box before.

That was my first thought, too. Jimmy Dudley was the main man for the Indians during that time, but the man in the photo isn't him. Still researching.

By the way, it was a sad day in my life when Danish Go-Rounds disappeared from the grocery shelves. I loved those things. How have Pop Tarts survived all these years but DGRs went by the wayside? Criminal.

Maybe it was just some dude that was way ahead of the times and wanted proof that his autographed baseballs were real? :)

J.McMurry 03-19-2011 07:59 PM

Dude!!

I remember those Danish Go-rounds, they were awesome, wish I had some now.

leftygrove10 03-20-2011 05:19 AM

Thanks for all the great comments on the Kellogg's box. I don't know when the Danish Go-Rounds went off the shelf, but I have never had any. You guys make it sound like I missed something special.

It's interesting to note that the Copyright date on the box is 1971, yet the Copyright date on the back of the cards is 1972.

Big Six 03-20-2011 10:32 AM

Any one have a kelloggs box for the 1972 regular issue...I have a complete set in psa 9 and would love to add that as a complimentary piece...

WillowGrove 03-20-2011 02:03 PM

It ain't Danish Go Rounds - but what is?

Ray Caldwell and Tom L. Hughes vintage no-hit pitcher snapshots

2 Attachment(s)
I picked up a couple of cool vintage snapshots of early no-hit pitchers tonight.

The first snapshot is of the Indians Ray "Slim" Caldwell that threw a no-hitter against the NY Yankees in 1919.

The second snapshot is of Thomas L. Hughes (Long Tom) of the circa 1906 NY Highlanders that threw 9 innings of perfection in the 1st game of a doubleheader in 1910 before finally giving up a single in the 10th inning. Hughes ended up allowing 6 more hits and ended up losing the game 5-0 to the Cleveland Naps. I actually own the only known ticket extant to this game in my collection. Long Tom ended up changing leagues and threw a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1916 while he was a member of the Boston Braves.

slidekellyslide 03-21-2011 12:04 PM

Found this at the antique store this morning...never seen one before, and I've seen A LOT of Husker collectibles in my time.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3.../husker002.jpg

Also picked up this ad card at an auction yesterday...it shows a shot of the stadium at Capital Beach which is where Lincoln played their Sunday games because it was illegal to play in town on Sundays...as far as I know this is the only known view of the Capital Beach baseball stadium.

"as far as I know this is the only known view of the Capital Beach baseball stadium."

Dan, as it states, it's also "Nebraska's Only Resort"

slidekellyslide 03-21-2011 12:57 PM

Capital Beach (now known as CapitOl Beach) was really something back in the day...there was an amusement park with a huge rollercoaster, an enormous wading pool and tons of other stuff to do there...it closed about 1960.

You must be thinking of Bobo Newsom. Holloman didn't have a '53T, but did have a '53T Archives card depicted in Browns garb.

A new month, and hopefully it's full of new pickups for all of us.

My latest pickup, to add to my growing collection of 19th century Harvard sports collectibles, is this scorecard from "Class Day" in 1882, featuring a game between the Harvard baseball team from 1877 vs. the 1882 squad.

Most notable in the lineup of the 1877 is "Thayer, C", which is none other than Frederick Thayer, inventor of the catcher's mask.

To follow up on the thread which started the month, and a question which was posted regarding the positions for the 1877 team, I emailed the Baseball Hall of Fame a couple of days ago, to see if they may have an answer for this. The gentleman from the HOF who replied to me was super helpful, and just found the answer this morning, courtesy of the next day's (June 24, 1882) Boston Globe article, which he emailed me (and is posted below).

For the 1877 team lineup, first base, second base and third base are designated as a, b and c; left field, center field and right field are l (left), m (middle) and r (right).

Lordstan 03-22-2011 01:14 PM

Nice work Scooter.

Using the boxscore, it appears that in the scorecard the shortstop is labeled "s" and the catcher is "h" for possibly "home."

Another thing to notice is that there were 18 runs scored on 28 total hits...Time of Game 2hours!!!! How long would this game be now?

Very cool item.
Congrats.

I think it's because TV timeouts between innings were much shorter in 1882. Plus, since there were "many ladies" in attendance, maybe the players kept the game moving along to keep a dinner date.

Scott - "Long Tom" Hughes was a member of NY AL only in 1904. "Salida Tom" Hughes (Thomas L. Hughes) pitched for them in 1906 and 1909-1910.

The Sugar Crisp box is from 1957.

Got this at the Antique Mall yesterday - Now I just need 1951, 1954, 1956, 1959 and 1960. I've knocked off two already this year which is amazing to me.

I've been working almost entirely on the 61 Yankees over the past month, and have been able to pick up 11 additional autographs including trainer Gus Mauch on an Oct 1950 GPC. The great thing about that team is that all members are very attainable with co-owner Del Webb probably being the hardest.

Picked up two game used jerseys. The first is from the 1984 Wichita Aeros club. I have to do some research to find out who #14 was. I'm hoping Eric Davis. The second is a 1978 Pittsburgh Pirate jersey known as the bumble bee style for obvious reason. It was worn by Jerry Reuss.

That bat is off the charts! I didn't know there was a even such a thing as a Zebra Striped Bat and a Mushroom combined into one. How many (if any) of these have you seen over the years?

Awesome pickup!

Hi Mark
Theres one pictured in Dan and Ed's book but besides that I cant find any other examples. I know another collection with one it but thats about it.
