Very nice items! The two on the right are likely 1-of-a-kind real photo postcards with the far right dating to 1907-1918 based on the stamp box on the back and the other one based on the photo looks like early 1920's. |

Val: I copied this scan from one of the recent auctions (can't remember which one). If memory serves, 'tho it don't serve too well, it was a near life-size portrait that was on display in Griffith Stadium (or RFK? or ??). Maybe someone else can get my story straight. Great image, eh?
I've always liked the Johnson and Street photo, and your colorized version is a beaut, but at the risk of offending the PC contingent and setting loose the Seinfeld quoters, it always struck my inner dinosaur as a tad gay. Many thanks for your kind words and very helpful info re my WaJo PCs. This info helped my very pathetic, Alzheimers-like memory recall the huge photo that David is referring to, which appeared in Legendary's November auction - ref. lot#1258, http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...x?lotid=114775 - and which sold for $8,295. I acquired my same-image PC in a trade about a year ago, and it has been in my safe deposit box ever since (this is the best excuse I can offer for not recognizing the image as being the same!).

Love these postcard threads. Don't have much to offer but here's a McGraw that I thought was Keeler until I put it on this board a while back:

We finished third at the NAIA World Series in Sioux City after defeating D1 Auburn when they were #1 during the regular season. We also defeated Miss State when they were top 25, D-2 #1 Delta State, NAIA #1 Dallas, NAIA #1 Bellevue, etc. Our head coach, Brian Shoop, formerly coached under Miss State's Ron Polk when Will Clark, Palmeiro, and Thigpen were there. After I graduated, Southern continued to win and finally won the World Series. They moved to NCAA D-1 but hired a new president who wanted football, so they switched to D-3. Coach Shoop moved to UAB where he remains, and Shoop's assistant is Coach Polk! Great men, both of them. http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/m...diaguide-1.jpg |

Thank you for the info! The two postcards are glued to a scrapbook so I wish I could see what is written on the back??? The scrapbook belonged to Emil Fertig who conversed with baseball players of the day. He was apparently the biggest fan of the Indianapolis Baseball team. He was a referee of sorts and the whole town relied on him for Baseball info. As you can see, A.R. Smith from Nashville, Tenn. is written on the front of the postcards, so I have tried to figure out if Smith has any relation to baseball??? No Luck... I want to thank Jeremy or JJ or Nashvillebaseball as well. I tried to respond to your email but I am not sure if it went through? I am posting another pick in case it got lost in translation. Wonder What Is Going On With This Dog Smoking A Pipe Postcard????? Back Stamp puts is at 1923-1939 - REALLY STRANGE |

These fights would normally involve five or six slaves fighting blindfolded and bare-knuckled. Depending on the pre-agreed rules, these fights would either last until one man was left standing, the winner, or until two remained standing, at which point the blindfolds would be removed from the combatants and the fight continued until one was unable to continue. The owner of the winner would receive the prize, which was usually small. The practice of fighting battles royal in this context continued long after the abolition of slavery. Some were still fought legally in the 1930s albeit with the use of gloves. However, most bouts in this period were fought illegally at "smokers", unsanctioned and unregulated boxing matches, as preludes to the main event. Almost all fighters at these contests, both legal and illegal, were still black African-Americans, although they were now allowed to keep their winnings. A battle royal is the subject of the first chapter of Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man. Many major black boxers of the early 20th century gained their first in-ring experience at these battles royal. Such fighters include Jack Johnson, Beau Jack, and Joe Gans." |

A really neat postcard.
I have collected quite a few cool postcards. If anyone is still interested in seeing more, just ask and I'll dig up some snapshots of baseball history. One of my favorite fields of collecting. A group of men playing as a team. Imagine them aged and wrinkled with their grandkids on their lap telling stories of their glory years. Pointing to teammates and telling their stories. To me, it tells more in one picture than any single baseball card ever could. Enjoy.
