Lots of subtle differences, but it's still a wonderful companion piece (taken by the same photographer during the same photo shoot). That is the first patch of that type I have ever seen... and still in its original packaging, no less. Has to be insanely rare... another amazing tie-in by Jimmy!

Ben, that really is a great Burke photo of 'ol Diz. Just so everyone knows, I went to Ben for his expertise on Type1 photos, specifically regarding the Dizzy
Dean, and although he wanted to add it to his collection, he was willing to back off and not compete with me to purchase it. It wasn't until I contacted him to say I wouldn't be bidding due to some great autograph opportunities that had presented themselves, that he decided to bid.
Thanks Ben for sharing your knowledge and your friendship! Also thanks to Mark, Jimmy, Scott, Jodi, and all the other members of this great board that have helped not only with my collecting, but that have helped provide a great place to shelter myself from a very hectic job. You guys are what's good about this hobby!
Now, I was able to pick up a couple of minor Burke's for a price a just couldn't resist.

Lordstan 05-15-2010 08:21 AM

Geez,
It's becoming quite the Burke thread.
Nice pick ups all!

And Mike, glad I could be of assistance providing you with shelter for your addiction. If you want to show your appreciation, that Henrich signed Sport mag you have would be a fine token of your gratitude.:D

Just send the cards to Coach's--I'm sure they can get 'em signed for you.

Beautiful photos, Mark.

Nice Pickup Mark! I'd been tracking that Bottomley for several days and woke up confident that I'd pick it up...that is until Mark kept me preoccupied with a purchase/trade that pretty much took me out of the bidding. I'll have to remember that trick:D I'm real happy with our deal though Mark!!

Bicem 05-17-2010 07:32 AM

Love that baseball game Greg... congrats!!!!

Lordstan 05-17-2010 07:44 AM

Shock and Awe!

Mike,
That was my strategy all along.
It's a two pronged approach.
1)Offer you something you couldn't pass up so you would not bid. Even though, I didn't know you wanted the Bottomley, it still works keeping you from bidding on anything : )
2)Get you to send me the money you would've spent, so I can spend it.

The items will be coming your way shortly. I hope you enjoy them.

Best,
Mark

Ah, the 'ol two pronged approach...that's the second time I've fallen for that this month! I swear, I've filled more holes in my collection in the last week then I had all last year.
Anyway, here's the deal....Mark gets to fill a hole in his signed Sports Mag collection by getting my Tommy Henrich and some cash considerations, and I get a 1925 TSN record book and a Mantle/Berra Sport Mag (signed by Mantle), which I will be sending away shortly after receiving it to Yogi to sign.
Life is good!!

Lordstan 05-17-2010 08:45 AM

Mike,

Man it's been a busy couple of weeks for me too.
Glad I could help fuel your addiction.

Mark

mr2686 05-17-2010 02:23 PM

Here's the other major piece that plugged an enormous hole in my 1934 Cardinals team project...Red Worthington. I've only seen two of these, and I was very fortunate to find that Jodi Birkholm had one available.
That leaves only two autographs to have every player, coach and GM for that team...and one will be picked up later this week, and the other next month

.

Very nice...Rolph was Mayor from 1912 until January 1931 when he became Governor of California. He died he in the summer of 1934 after several heart attacks...so your photo dates to 1930 or earlier if he was indeed the active mayor at the time.

Haven't posted any new pickups in a while, so here goes...

1. Comical Italian Baseball Figural Players (idiotic looking but also endearing, and impossible to find in this MINT Condition)

2. Johnny Bench 1970 Lithograph by LeRoy Neiman

3. Baseball Player Original Sculpture by celebrated Mexican artist Manuel Felguerez

4. Golfer Original Sculpture by Felguerez

5. 1940 Cincinnati Reds Jacket worn by either Jimmy Wilson or Hank Gowdy (both wore #2 during that time frame)

Also wanted to post this beautiful piece from REA. I kept the Athletics Sign for myself, but wanted to post pics of this Giants Sign before having to part with it (it has been sold to a fellow Net54 Member...)

This Giants Ad Sign features some amazing Carl Horner Portraits, including Matty. McGraw, Marquard, Snodgrass, Merkle and Meyers. Great D&M Lucky Dog Mascot and long-forgotten team logos as well...

BrockJacob 05-19-2010 04:19 PM

Great pickups Mark! The Reds jacket is killer and you're not kidding about those Italian figures being impossible to find in that kind of condition. Those things are normally wrecked! I've never seen any near the pristine condition of yours.

Yeah... I should have bought more in retrospect. There were about 8-9 of them (all MINT) on ebay recently. I just picked my 3 favorites, but now kinda regret not going after the whole group.

In the spirit of Jimmy's magnificent tie-in pieces, here is a neat little item I was thrilled to find... a newspaper ad from 1909, featuring this very game. Not many of these survived, but it looks like they did promote it pretty well a century or so ago...

This just about completes my busy month and my 1934 Gas House Gang project. Another hard to find autograph...Jim Winford. Would have preferred a nice 3x5 but I'm afraid beggers can't be choosers on this one. May upgrade later but for now I have only one person left out of 34 for this project...Branch Rickey, and he's a fairly easy one.

Atta Boy Mark! Now THAT is a killer companion piece! A matching newspaper ad over 100 years ago?! How in the world did you ever find that?

Best, Jimmy

Lordstan 05-22-2010 08:41 PM

Nice small item.
Same front as used for playing cards with varying advertising logos at base.
This cards though is from the cuban league. It is a schedule for the 1951-1952 season. It also appears to be sponsored by Guinness.

Hey Mark...I was wondering ir you were going to pick up a Ruth to go with the Gehrig. They look great!

perezfan 05-27-2010 01:40 PM

Yes... a visually stunning pair. Just beautiful... Congrats, Mark!

Also... Brock, those are great pickups. Like you, I just love those early chalkware figural pieces, and those are all some really tough finds. Many congrats to you as well!

Lordstan 05-27-2010 02:43 PM

Mark,
Thanks for the kind words.
The books themselves are in such great shape. The scans just don't do them justice.
At some point, I think they would look great framed together, but I hate not being able to get in and read them.
Mark

perezfan 05-27-2010 03:08 PM

Yep... it's always tough to know what to do with these types of collectibles. I bet they'd be spectacular framed, given the gorgeous colors and graphics, matching images, and iconic subject matter.

On the other hand, you'll completely lose the function for which they were intended. Tough call, but I would read through them thoroughly, and then relegate them to display. They're just too pretty to sit on a coffee table or in a bookshelf!

Picked up some nice Baseball Banks recently. These are tough to find in great condition. Had to compromise a tiny bit on the condition of the Jackie Robinson Bank. But since I had never seen one before, I was thrilled to get it...

Has anyone else ever seen one of these?

Tigerden 05-28-2010 07:49 PM

Mark, that is a real nice pickup on the Robinson Baseball Bank. Recently, a rare version of this bank sold on the bay, it was a promotion for the movie "The Pride of the Yankees" and had a Gehrig facsimile. No doubt, both of these banks are insanely rare as you like to say.

perezfan 05-28-2010 11:02 PM

Thanks Tigerden...

I guess the "insanely rare" thing is a bit of an over-statement... how about seldom-seen?

I knew the Robinson Bank had to be pretty scarce, and I did see that Pride of the Yankees Bank as well. I caught it towards the end of its ebay run, and it was already over $500 so I never even entertained the thought of bidding on that one. It sure was a cool piece though. That one had to be insanely rare!

mjkm90 05-29-2010 04:23 AM

I've been after this one for a while. Not tough to find, but tough to find in top condition and at a reasonable (in this case low low low) price.:D
