Perhaps you can add "attention to detail" to your list. FWIW, I thought the same thing the first time I read it, too...then I saw the notation... |
Slow day on the board today but I am quite sure my fellow co workers have heard me roaring with laughter as I read this thread. Carry on :)
|
Dude - your first post promised to be your "last post" . . . So stop posting! Why this thread is not clearly labeled as "OT" is beyond me.

Welcome back Brad if your not leaving after all. Kind of reminds me of Tenacious D when Kyle quits the band :)

With 2200+ views in this I decided it was thyme four me to reed this thread and sea watt it was about... homophones.

Quote:
Does anyone know what a homophone is? Clue, it has nothing to do with being a homophobe. |
Am I too Late to say .....

Welcome Back! |
I think the word everyone is looking for is...
homonym :p
|
au contraire...
Homonyms have the same spelling, homophones don't necessarily...

This thread is annoying! If your going away, just go. If not, get some thicker skin. No one cares if you stay or go. Lose the "oh poor me" BS. It's pathetic! Man I hate these "I'm not posting anymore" threads. Who needs more attention?
Brad... Have a drink or a smoke and chill out. It's frik'n baseball cards. Oh, and welcome back. Dan |
Dude, keep posting about not posting anymore! Just check your puberty striken feelings at the door... This isn't the Valentine's Day Dance!
Frank- nice, very nice. I learnt something there. |
it's ok...we all make mistakes......

Awesome thread.

Brad's comments are sometimes careless, can be defensive and confrontational, but hope he stays 'cuz he owns great prewar!
We all type dum stuff. Just remember when we were five years old... Simply *apologize and move on. *Exception, those insisting on 'bringing the noize'. |
Exultant Joy
Dude! Homophones, Tenacious D, and Freddy Mercury's huge...vertical. All in one thread! I haven't had much time to read the board lately, but it looks like I need to start setting aside some me time to catch up. Da noize done been brought lately!
We should have learned by now that although mankind can split the atom and Yoko can split up the Beatles, there is no splitting up the following: Kato and Nash, Tango and Cash, Brad and Net54. -Ryan |

Why is it that the guy who happily offends Jews, Blacks and gays has the thinnest skin on the board?
Must be a conspiracy. |

A Venn diagram of the groups he offended yields the fact that he actually only hates Sammy Davis Junior. Maybe it's not so bad after all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnzHtm1jhL4 |

I think Brad HATES SDJ. (Also, I included a link to a GREAT video.) Totally different joke. (That... and I must have missed Jeff's the first time around.) |

Matt, you've got a great memory. Next, Jim's joke was a pale comparison to mine and unoriginal; however, putting up that video of an incredibly obscure, early 70s(?) annoyingly horrible song that was completely forgotten by me (but now will live with me forever) deserves some serious merit -- and of course it is completely applicable to the situation at hand.

1966. That absolves anyone your age for forgetting it. |
I was just one year old then...but I know I had heard that song before so somehow, someway it must have had some shelf-life (God only knows why). I love the video, however. Different, non-politically correct era.

I was in a camp in Maine that summer of 1966 and remember the song well. It was really popular but a lot of people felt it was just too strange...and for good reason. I believe the flip side of the 45 was a song recorded backwards, perhaps that very tune.
|
...but played on a homophone it was the same ?
|
I've got the album
Back in 1966 I was working a real job at Mickey D's and had a lot of that $1.10/hr. burning a hole in my pocket.
I bought the Napoleon XIV album (in Mono) and still have it. The entire album is in the same vein: The Nuts on My Family Tree, I'm in Love with My Little Red Tricycle, Bats in My Belfry, etc. |

I was only a year old in '73 but maybe somebody here can answer: was the song's re-emergence brought on by Dr. Demento? Perhaps he was playing the song on his radio show and a populace that had lived through what happened between '66 and '73 could appreciate it better. |

Ahhh...that's when I must have heard it. Dr. Demento was great. Not sure why, but he was great.

Now THATS funny |
From the Merriam-Webster online dictionary:
Homonym- one of two or more words spelled and pronounced alike but different in meaning. Homophone- one of two or more words pronounced alike but different in meaning or derivation or spelling. Calmly, now.... the words have to be spelled alike and pronounced alike to be homonyms; but need only be pronounced alike to be homophones. That allaboutspelling site is incomplete and a bit ambiguous. Admittedly, some definitions for homonyms allow an "or" instead of an "an" for the spelling and pronunciation, and therein is the confusion. Wikipedia explains the too better, as does the Merriam Webster awn lion dictionary. To give precision to the meaning of homonym, and in looking at its origin, it seems that heat and heat would be homonyms, heat (to make hot) and heat (a grouping of contestants in a race), and also they would be homophones. While meat, meet, and mete would only be homophones.... With this attempt at explaining the too, I'm now dun. |
sew..too plus too makes fore? oar are we getting know wear hear?

love it !

The funniest post in years! What a complete waste of brain waves...fantastic! It is good to stop and laugh now and again! I just can't wait for "now" to end...it hurts!
