Boy oh Boy Rick. What a terrific story...
That has to be one of the best stories I've ever read...ever! And the Gibby snapshot is simply off the charts! If I was you, that photo would be buried with me. Thanks for sharing such a cool story.
Best always, Jimmy |

You gotta love that stadium usher and a little girl named Betty. I'm lucky to have several from both.
Betty took pictures of ballplayers leaving the stadium after the game and then had them signed. |

The back of this photo notes "8/27/45 Pologrounds NYC"
Before I send it to PSA for authentication, does anyone have an opinion on the signature? |
I am guessing the Ott signature might be authentic, but traced over at a later date. That's how it looks in the scan, anyway. Please let us know how it comes back, as I will be interested to see. Cool piece either way!

A snapshot of Babe in a fur coat and coonskin cap.
With the famous "Babo Ruth" signature. However, on examination, I believe there was a legitimate pencil signature that was later (badly) traced over in fountain pen. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/39/92...83e385f5_o.jpg |
who is this
Just picked this up at a flea market. Does anyone know who this is? Thanks,Rich

Looks like the timing was good to revive this thread.
Hey Anthony, I've seen multiple color snapshots of Koufax but yours is the first B&W that I have come across. Sweet ! |

For the book I am currently working on, I've had quite a few players send me their own personal photos which I have blown up to 8x10 so I could send them back the original. When the book comes out it will have these photos. I like seeing these non commercial photos as they differ greatly from the standard poses.

Dynarl, are you sure that's a photo of MLK Jr? It doesn't look like him to me.
Howard |
I thought it was but not sure. Anyone know for sure? D.
|
It's not Dr. King, but not sure who it is.
|
The guy he's with isn't Frank Robinson either.
(It might be Buzz Arlett :o ). |

The photo of the Waners is more than likely from the 1927 World Series at Forbes Field. Notice the bunting. Also, the two women with them may or may not be family members. I have a photo of the Waners and their family taken before a 1927 World Series game. I will have to dig it up and see if the two ladies in this photo are the same ladies in my photo.

Ryan signed snapshot
[QUOTE=thekingofclout;742932]My only signed snapshots. A couple of pretty fair righties. Nolan Ryan in front of Shea 1968. And Ole Diz as a Cubby in 1939.
Hey Jimmy, Great candid shot of Ryan in his rookie season. That's definitely an early Ryan signature as well, probably from 1968 or 1969 based on others that I have from that time period. Sweet! |

Snapshots
Don't have many at all but did pick up a few from a fellow Board member last year of various Yankees and common folk at 1927 spring training. Yanks are Durocher, Lazzeri and Bengough.

This is the 1927 Yankees team photo. It is from the same lot that David's(Kawicka) pics are from.
The gentleman I bought the group from inherited them from his father who took the pics during spring training. It matches perfectly with the official Spring training team photo that is out there except for a slightly different angle. I've never seen a team snapshot like this. Does anyone else have anything similar? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...YanksSTa-2.jpg Another couple of Gehrig snaps. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Lou/Velox1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Lou/Velox2.jpg There are a few pics of these two guys making faces and such. Do they look familiar to anyone. I haven't been able to identify if they are actors, comedians, or famous at all. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Lou/Velox3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Lou/Velox4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Lou/Velox5.jpg |

Those are two of the Ritz Brothers in your photos, Lordstan.
Definitely Harry on the left with the hat; I believe it's brother Al on the right. http://s915.photobucket.com/albums/a.../harryritz.jpghttp://s915.photobucket.com/albums/a...tix/alritz.jpg It also seems that Barack Obama's father and Mayberry town drunk Otis Campbell are sitting behind them.... |

I defer to Rick P.'s knowing eye. One look at their proboscises is all you need to know that these guys are brothers. Penner was just a semi-educated guess.

Wait a minute...is Ty Cobb actually smiling??
Here's my contribution: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...GehrigRuth.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...ehrigRuth2.jpg It might be tough to see because the photo itself is tiny (2" x 4"ish), and we're pretty far away in the stands, but here we have Gehrig at bat, with the Babe on deck. Supposedly, it dates from a game against the Browns in 1929. Written on the back was: "Game went to 12 innings. Score was 6-6 in last half when Babe hit a home run and won the game. The upper stand is vacant because this was a middle of the week game." Didn't all Yankee games end like that? Anywho, according to some research, it's the contest from July 28th. Though, despite what the text on the back says, according to baseball-reference.com, this was a Sunday game and midweek. Here's the boxscore: http://www.baseball-reference.com/bo...92907280.shtml Hope ya dig! Graig |
Wow, Graig. If you ever consider parting with it...

Hugh Jennings had a sad end. He had a nervous breakdown at the end of the 1925 season and was unable to return to his job as John McGraw's assistant manager for 1926. He was institutionalized in a sanitarium in South Carolina and never went back to baseball after he got out. Here is a snapshot of Jack Dempsey visiting with Jennings at the sanitarium:

I love those snapshots! Let's keep 'em coming ... Here's a few Boys of Summer (Pee Wee Reese, Pete Reiser & Billy Herman), plus Gashouse Gang great Pepper Martin and Willard Hershberger, the Reds catcher who took his sadly life during the '39 pennant race. All of these, as well as a number of others displayed in this thread, come from the same group of images captured by a Forbes Field usher in the late 30s and early 40s. That era seemed to be the Golden Age of snapshots ...
