A couple early cabinets , (1909) of hall of famer Max Carey. Pre Pittsburgh Pirates. Played for the Concordia Theological Seminary baseball team.
1st photo he's in the bottom row 4th from the left. 2nd photo he's 3rd over from the right.

This was being sold as an advertisement for a baseball game, but it is, in fact, the game itself. A page from a 1911 Sunday magazine supplement in the Detroit News Tribune, the rather insane game is played by swinging a key suspended on a cord hanging from above at tacks placed on the page, i.e. game board. It's about 24" x 18".

Both of these are 9" x 12", unfinished, and as usual, poorly photographed. I still have some stuff to work out on the Foxx, as he just doesn't look right to me (if anyone notices something glaring, please say something!). DiMaggio is still in the beginning stages, though I'm very happy with the results thus far. Even though he looks really dorky in this shot (but, ya gotta love that old Seals uniform!!).

And, if any of you don't want me to post this stuff since it's not actually in the memorabilia category, or is flat out boring, just let me know. I don't want to waste any bandwidth or step on toes!

Absolutely sensational find on that newspaper-supplement game, Joe! For the baseball game specialists (all half dozen of us, worldwide?), that's as exciting a find as the discovery of a previously unknown pre-WWI card is for the legions of card guys. It's an entirely new discovery, a heretofore uncatalogued game, the only existing example of which we're aware.

We're triply envious in that we overlooked that auction ourselves, and in that our search for the <I>Buffalo News</I> edition of the 1896 newspaper baseball game supplement, <I>Will Our Boys Win,</I> has dead-ended even right here in Buffalo. If anyone on board here has anything additional on either Joseph's <I>Detroit News-Tribune</I> game, or on the Buffalo edition of the 1896 game (well documented in Boston, New York, and St Louis editions), we'd appreciate hearing about it...

I find the Beckett authentication of the 5 person announcer/umpire photo quite amusing, as of course "Klein" is Bill Klem, and the Klein/Klem and Tommy Connolly ID's are transposed.

Let's call this an August "revelation"...

I was researching some of my tickets tonight and discovered that in this game, played July 10, 1935, Babe Herman of the Reds hit the first home run in a night game in major league history! This was the fourth night game in MLB history, and the first night game for the visiting Brooklyn Dodgers.

And this came from the same seller - only the seller didn't list it as a Nebraska football game which I'm sure is why I got it for a bargain. 0-0 tie against powerhouse Minnesota. As an added bonus when I got it in the mail today I was surprised to read the note and could see the postcard was written by a Nebraska football player. A little googling helped me figure out that this postcard was written by all-conference half-back and linebacker Ernest Kroger to his girlfriend back home in Polk, Nebraska.

My guess is that the baseball postcard is for a lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.

AOUM was a Masonic order. They changed their name over the years, but it stood for "Americans of the Order of United Mechanics". Originally they called themselves Workers, not Mechanics. A spin-off group added "Jr." (Junior). Not sure what the exact meaning is of "mechanics", but their platform was to greatly reduce immigration. Perhaps they viewed themselves as social mechanics. The order began around 1840 in PA, and spread across the country.

Nice pickup, I was the underbidder on that piece and was hoping it would sneak through. Still a very nice price though. I know Carlton mentioned buying the same print at the national a couple years back. If I won it, I was going to try to have it professionally cleaned, and framed. What are your plans with it?

Similar plans as you had. I'll have to see both what shape it's in, and what space I still have on the home and office walls--I think I still have about 10 to 15 older pieces still unframed, and needing space

Oh man, Leyendecker was a GOD amongst men. Those illustrators of the golden era were really some of the greatest (and most underrated) artists of all time...

Hey milkit1! Thanks so much for the compliments. I actually might do some smaller paintings in the future, say 5"x7" studies, most of which would end up being portraits. I would imagine that they'll end up being a bit looser and more expressive, being that they'd be so small. So, I'll certainly keep the Black Prince of Baseball in mind!!

Could you do action shots in small scale? My fave of your paintings are the ones with the stadium backgrounds especially "Beast Bangs Gomez". Another neat Idea I think would be to add your buyer into the pic maybe as a person in the crowd or whatever.

I'll keep it in mind, Sean, though with the images being only 5"x7", I don't think they would be too action oriented, unless they were just incredibly simplified. Once I start getting that small, the back starts to really hurt if I go in there for some serious detail...

Id suggest starting a thread on here asking how many people would be interested in this and how much theyd be willing to spend or put your own prices down or whatever. Maybe do 1 or 2 to show what you can do on a small scale. If you are getting a few to buy your big peices im sure you could get a lot more to buy your less expensive small works. Im surprised you havent been approached by any of the major card companies to do artwork cards for random pack insertions. This Avengers set i collect had 50 original drawings that they inserted randomly into packs that were very cool!

I've never been able to pull the trigger to get the actual item, so this trade card will have to suffice for now. Not, of course, to be confused with the fabulous color trade card for the bank, which generally sells for more than the Dark Town Battery itself.
