The Real "Dutch Leonard"

1 Attachment(s)
Picked up this M101-5 of the "first" Dutch Leonard. He set the AL record for lowest ERA in a season at 0.96 in 1914. Also, famously, had an ongoing feud with Ty Cobb. Was a great pitcher who became a grape growing millionaire! Many consider this his rookie card.

That Tinker is so nice. What is wrong with SGC??

Thanks, Phil, nice cards this month all, even the w9316 or whatever they are called. I have one as a type and actually like the artwork on them. I think they call it post-impressionist.

Thanks Josh, I love when a card like that takes a grading hit for whatever reason, keeps it reasonably priced. I think its the white spot on the right hand side and/or what looks like printing registration marks mid border. For me, the card hits everything important to me, centering, color, and registration.

That's a great point and I feel same. You get all the all the feeling you would get from a higher graded card at a better price point.

Just picked up a group of these Casey at the bat ink blotters….believed to be from about the 1930’s or so.

Great cards by all. Putting a dent in T206 HOF group here last couple weeks.

Hi Guys !!!

It was just pointed out to me (by our fearless leader !!!), how I spelled "thread" in this month's title.

I didn't realize, but not surprised at all.

I was a dyslexic before dyslexia was cool --- Spelling and I don't get along very well .......... :p

But then again, we can still "tread" along with these great cards .......... ;)

Fun, fun, Scott

RCMcKenzie 02-05-2022 10:59 PM

The Sockalexis is nice. Is that a postcard? Nice one, Ryan, can't go wrong with Cobb. I was looking at lot 113, the Ruth montage group with what I think was an e122 Walter Johnson. Looks like it has some break value. Their website is much easier for me to navigate past all the new stuff.

Yes, real photo postcard. This one (obviously) postally used, I don't love the cancel mark on the front but I do prefer used postcards, I love how they are located in time and space. (This one: Postmarked June 1907, Waterville, ME, with a mention in the inscription of Indian Island, where he grew up.)

There are a number of examples out there, I've seen 4 or 5, here and in auctions, and someone mentioned having a couple others. (Also: I never would have recognized this if not for posts about it here, so thank you net54!)

The gravestone pc is nice, I've never seen that one.

An online auction find;

Diamond Matchbooks:

U1 - Silver Border - 1934
Billy Herman
Earl Adams
Richard Gyselman

U3-1 - 1935
Bill Urbanski

The Herman is rough with pockmarks as if it was stepped on in the gravel, but at the end of the day its still a period piece of a HOF'er.

How do you do that, not collect matchbooks with strikers? I personally can't collect them unless the strikers are still attached. LOL

Otherwise, great pickup, really love those silver border matchbooks. Way under appreciated as collectibles.

It’s all about the upgrade! lol. I could go on eBay and buy the best examples, but I like finding vintage stuff in the wild and then upgrading when I can within my budget. Much more fun to me that way.

The silver border ones sure are the prettiest to me too, and I agree, under appreciated.

Thanks! There are several different sets, actually throughout the years. Some years have small numbers in the sets so set completion is a real possibility.

Am well aware. Been working on all five sets off and on over the years. The Silver Borders are really great though, with some supposed tough SPs/rarities. I think it may be the nicest looking set of the five different Diamond Matchbooks sets out there, with the 1935 Black Border set being a really really close second in terms of looks, if not actually an equal. All are very underappreciated to my thinking.

Won some great cards in the previous Net54 front page auction, but felt compelled to share this W519 Schang from the lot. On the back it obviously depicts the bald brother of Wilson, Tom Hanks friend in the movie Cast Away. I have already named him Spalding.

Thanks Leon!
