Matt,

Here's another beater Chase for you. This one is a type 2 coupon and was a gift to me from another collector who thought my beater filled collection would be a good home for it. I guess that's a compliment on some level. :)

He actually gave me a handful of coupons just like this one. I've passed some along over the years to other like minded collectors (as gifts, just as I received them). I love this thread.

Best,

AndyH

Yes they are beaters, but they were very tough for me to find even in these conditions! Love those Holland Cream cards and all of the T227s!

Great stuff guys! (Though I imagine to Brucii, these cards are like Kryptonite.)

Maybe not quite beaters in all cases. Sorry about adding other cards, but these are old scans. The Jackie is the true beater of the bunch. I threw in my old 1970 Cuda too for good measure. Sold it and found it listed on ebay (matched the VIN to old records) almost 10 years later. looking much worse!!!

My favorite beater and on some level card, is what I lovingly call Exorcist Bill Dahlen, due to the incredibly well-placed ink stain.

<a href="http://s1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff453/Idiottax/?action=view&amp;current=DahlenPersonal.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff453/Idiottax/DahlenPersonal.jpg" border="0" alt="Dahlen Personal"></a>

I'm a big fan of cards that have lived a good life. Funny story here is that the first time I saw the card, it was paired with a very rough Brown Hindu Harry Bay before I was certain I was going to collect the Southern Leaguers. I ended up as the despondent underbidder on the card, thinking I would never see Exorcist Bill Dahlen again.

Fortunately, the winner of the lot was primarily concerned with the Brown Hindu Bay and four weeks later, Exorcist Bill Dahlen has arrived at his final resting place in my collection.

You sir define the term beater!!!

ls7plus 10-24-2011 12:29 AM

I'm sorry, but beaters, even the rare ones I buy as a temporary filler, begin to get to me after awhile, and then I become agitated that I bought and own it to the point that it finally has to go! And I just don't mean a sale, either. I mean go! Just not a beater guy, I guess.

But buy what youlike!

Thanks! I pretty much only collect beaters. The examples shown are just scans I had handy. There are plenty more where those came from ;)

DISCLAIMER: NOT MINE :(
I was underbidder on this a few months ago. It went for only $280. Hope it's someone on this board who picked it up.

atx840 10-30-2011 09:10 AM

That red Hindu had the same owner as my first page beater, a locally famous folk singer in key west collected them and passed them on to his caretaker. Recently she became sick and needed funds and a friend sold them. There is a second br hindu owned by a board member.

I am so glad I started this thread! What great cards and plus anybody can play! Even the richest dude on here has a beater as well as those of us that love cards, but have modest incomes. Keep them coming! I would be proud to own any of the cards shown.

Welcome to the board! The term "rare" (or "super rare") is thrown around a little too liberally. Hang around the board for awhile, search through the old threads, and you'll find that cards that you once thought were rare, such as the 1952 Topps Mantle, the T206 Wagner, etc. are not really rare at all. They're just in high demand.

Indeed I am noticing that, but I was thinking maybe I was wrong, I usually judge by ebay, if something is a royal pain to find, I usually consider that rare. I am lucky to have found a beat up 54 bowman Williams ungraded for close to book value, sometimes my biggest problem is not finding a card but finding it in crappy enough condition so I can afford it. I would rather have 6 beaters of different legends rather than have 1 superb condition one. I do agree the 52 Mantle does not seem like it's rare at all, I think my Eddie Mathews rookie is more scarce or even my Hoyt Wilhelm Rookie. Thanks to ebay and other online sites cards are alot easier to find even lower condition. I gave up collecting in the mid 90s because of high priced card shops.

Indeed you do packs, yours would prob sell for over book value there. Mine cost me $800 BIN on ebay, I do not know why no one was taking it.
