'63 Fleer

Jeff, I agree '63 Fleer is sweet. I also like '61. A man could do a lot worse than go on a 60s Fleer run!

Absolutely! The Fleer sets rock.

I think my favorite three are: 1962 Topps, 1968 Topps & 1966 Philadelphia in that order. The only problem w/ the '62's are they don't look great w/ too much edge wear which is common due to the black borders.

Agreed! And 61 is the best of them.

I have been looking at the '61 Fleer set, and I really like what I see. The design is right up my alley...I love the colors and the logos especially. Also, it has NFL and AFL players. I knew I liked the early 60s Fleer sets, but I especially dig '61. I am thinking of building a high grade set as my next project. Before I can get started, I need to polish off my '69 Topps set and get it the way I want it and finish off paying for some '65 Topps baseball. After that, I may well go after '61 Fleer. Any of you have any experiences with this set? I am normally a Topps guy but Fleer looks pretty good right now.

I put it together years ago. It's a great set! Can't help you with pricing, etc. as I did it raw and have it in a binder. I don't recall any specific cards being tougher than others for a mid grade set but perhaps there are challenges at a higher grade. Others might know better.

Keep us posted!

Like you guys I love the Fleer sets, and need just 20 cards to complete my run. The only gripe I have with the 1961 set is that because of the back colors the numbers can be hard to read:)
Here is my 1961 wrapper and my unnumbered 1963 checklist card. I've seen the "FREE SECRET MAGIC MESSAGE" inserts on eBay, and they don't look all that exciting? I'm sure most of these were tossed in the trash can.

Will do, Jeff. Thanks for the response. When I get some other stuff paid down, '61 will probably be next...just can't stop looking at it. I like it enough that I think I might like to do it in high grade. Ultimately, I may revert to my mid grade ways and do it for less $. You seem to be correct that there doesn't seem to be any commons or anything scarcer or pricier relative to the rest of the set. It just comes down to what I want to spend I suppose. We'll see as the project gets closer to happening.

You are very welcome Robert.

It is a great site that is updated daily, and as you probably have already discovered, there are many vintage card sets they have featured.

Favorite 60's FB Set

No question: 65 tallboys. Had about half as a kid. Loved the size and the fact that about half the team were in the set. SP's a challenge and clear photos.

2nd - 66 Philadelphia
3rd - 59 topps.

last place tie: 68 topps and 64 topps.

I'll break your tie. 64T were gross.

1968 Topps and 1961 Fleer. The 1968 set I fell in love with as a kid and have always collected. Great clean graphics and images. I also like the way some old guard players are in the set on the way out (Taylor and Ditka come to mind) and some new rookies are in there too. Plus there were good inserts.

The 1961 Fleer set is amazing to me for some images especially the Packers. I wanted the Jimmy brown ever since a neighbor kid showed me one. I just bought my 2nd. An upgrade. PSA 9 oc.

I'm with you Bill, 65 Topps are my all time favorite, I'm in the middle of building the 66 Philly set which to me is a very close 2nd...

My biggest issue with the 1968's has been centering. Now, I am not a centering nut. Some folks need that perfect 50/50 centering. I'm not that picky. But, I have seen the majority of the cards I've run into from this set with 75/25 or worse centering. So, my set is nice as far as registration and corners, but the centering is all over the place, and I just can't see myself spending the extra dollars to look for those better pieces when there are so many nice sets out there. The 1969's didn't have these issues. 1970 was better, but not perfect. And I don't see these problems with my 1967's. So, was something wrong in 1968?

Good question Sam and I wish I could answer that for you.

I couple pages back in this thread is an awesome display of 1968 Topps Football and all the cards are super sharp.
