1939 PC from Carmel, NY from the training camp of Arturo Godoy, one of Joe Louis's bums of the month (challengers he beat readily). I liked it because of the local connection: my family spent every summer in the Carmel township when I was kid and I have very fond memories of going to Lake Gleneida in Carmel every 4th of July for the Fireman's Fair and fireworks shows.

Being bored and putting some postcards in mylar sleeves. Discovered I had some multiple cards from the old Lew Lipset auctions, all in one holder. He used to sell postcards in groups. Here are 4 Max Steins and 2 Pinkertons (1 blank and 1 stat back). After all the negativity on PSA and trimmers, its nice to see raw postcards to remind me why I like collecting this cardboard.

Very nice Rhett and great to see them all together. Thanks to a board member, I just got this 1908 Our Home Team postcard of the Chicago White Sox. There are 5 teams in this series and I believe there are 4 different flap colors for each team. Excited to get a purple one in.

Peter got it, Billy Hamilton was the Manager for Haverhill of the New England League team from 1902-1908 (these postcards date to 1908).

Tough to see in the scans but the postcards for Haverhill and Brockton have an embossed stamp in lower corner from a Fall River, MA photographer.

Since both baseball and automobiles were both growing in popularity around the early 1900s. I'm really liking any image that features both. Thats a cool looking PC Leon. I'm going to throw a curveball by posting a type 1 photo showing Cobb and his Chalmer automobile. In 1909, Cobb participated in the New York to Atlanta Good Roads Tour to promote the use of the automobile for long distance travel. The goal was to show that the roads were “good” all the way from NY to ATL.. Would love to find any RPPCs of him during this ride.

I can't believe this thread had slipped to page 10. Still my favorite thread ever.

For you postcard gurus out there. Ever seen this one before?? I have seen the 1928 Block Brothers St. Louis Cardinals Team PC a million times before, but I had never seen this individual postcard of Rogers Hornsby. I assume this is also from '28? Anyone have any more info about it? I was happy to add it to my collection a few months ago, but I can't seem to find another example.

Bicem 04-02-2020 11:43 AM

Nice Derek! I used to own that and couldn't find much about it. Always wondered if it's a one-off dedicated to Hornsby or if there are other players? Probably just a dedication to the superstar.

Anyone out there collect McCarthy's but especially signed ones?

Hi there - yes, I collect JD McCarthy PCs. I am also building off the work of Dan Even (or maybe it was someone else) to try to document all the front/back combinations of baseball McCarthys out there. It's an impossible task, but someone's gotta do it.

I can't believe you have that many hockey ones. I probably have a little over 100 hockey. We'll need to touch base at some point to compare notes.

Alan - I'll see if I have a Pappas squatting. According to the "Legend For McCarthy Baseball Postcards" (rev. 10/26/2010), I also see that there are 31 examples of Orioles players. I haven't gotten around to documenting the Orioles yet of the images I have saved to see if there are more out there. If I find any others you are missing, I'll let you know. Good luck!

One more thing. I received quite a few signed Red Wings by writing players during the 70's. The only color I don't have signed is Pierre Jarry. Can't seem to get him TTM but then no one does.

I know there are a few blank back postcards that were actually issued before Red Wimmer bought the rights/collection (due to postage stamps on the back). Are most blank backed ones, though, reprints made by Wimmer?

His are easy to tell from the real ones as the paper stock is very thin.

good to know. Thanks for sharing. I think I have noticed a few paper thin ones in my collection, so perhaps I've been duped in a few instances. Do any of the Wimmer reprints have a postcard back or the post 1963 JD McCarthy one line address on the back? Or are they all blank backed?

Some have the postcard back and also the one line. The first Red Wings McCarthy put out were on thin stock in the 40's but were oversized. It seems if you have collected these for many years you just know the feel of a authentic one.

James Elder Postcard Question

2 Attachment(s)
I know this postcard is newer than most on this thread, but hoping someone can give me more information.

I always believed this Ken Hubbs postcard was issued by James Elder based upon the #365 on the back. However, the front doesn't seem to match any photos I've found on the internet. The Elder Ken Hubbs postcards I've found show him in a batting pose. The postcard has the look and feel of an James Elder issue.

Can anyone verify if this is a James Elder postcard and is it Ken Hubbs? I'm not aware of any Elder variations. I assume the autograph on the back isn't Hubbs, but thoughts/opinions on the autograph are appreciated.

Attachment 406051 Attachment 406052

slidekellyslide 06-22-2020 09:46 AM

Yes it is Ken Hubbs without a doubt. Probably an Elder card, the number matches up with his "set" number for Hubbs, but it is a different photo. On the signature I would post this in the autograph section and ask for the expert opinion over there. Elder's "set" is attributed to 1966 which would make it impossible for Hubbs to have signed it, but I don't know how they came to the conclusion the set is from that year...I suspect he put those cards out over a number of years.

I picked up this PC of the 1927? Portsmouth Truckers team from the Richard Merkin collection in the very recent Hake's Auction. If this is the 1927 team, its player-manager at age 41 was Zinn Beck (who sold his Zinn Beck Bat Co. in 1927). Beck, in his only year with Portsmouth, led the team to the Virginia League championship in 1927. If this is the 1927 team and if Beck is in this pic, I would guess he's the only one in uniform that is not wearing a baseball cap. I'n not much of a researcher, and my Google search didn't turn up any pics that I was able to match to the PC. Can anyone identify Zinn Beck as being in this PC?

Richard, I think you may have nailed it - thanks. I do see a resemblance. Until now, I hadn't even considered the man in the suit. Because Zinn Beck played in 97 games as the player-manager, I assumed he'd be one of the guys in uniform and the guy in the suit to be the team owner or GM.

Just catching up on this thread. When something was mailed within the limits of a town or city you could address it to city and it woud get to where it was intended. I have a number of Christmas cards from about 1948-51 mailed to an Olympic gold medalist. He lived in Cleveland and many of them have the street address and also say 'city'. If the town was small enough as I suspect Bridgeton, NJ was back then it would probably be very easy for the letter carrier to know where the baseball meeting was.

Here is the only postcard I have ever owned. I love that it looks like Hollywood central casting was called in to assemble this rag tag (but tidy and uniformly uniformed) crew, with the kindly Father Finnegan leading them down the straight and narrow both on field and off. Of course, the player at the upper left may have to ask for forgiveness in confession based upon his suggestive batting stance.

Hi all,

Here is my addition! This postcard shows what is now Folsom Field on the campus of the University of Colorado. The image dates from 1925-1935 and can be narrowed down to the years of 1925-1929 based on aspects of the stadium that are, and are not present in the photo. Colorado opened what was then University of Colorado Stadium on 10/11/24 by stomping Regis 39-0 and was offically dedicated two weeks later on 11/1/24 as Colorado battled Utah to a 3-0 win.

When the stadium was constructed in 1924, it was barely ready for the team to move in, therefore it was not actually finished till sometime during the following year, in 1925. Most likley spring or summer when the running track was installed.

The postcard brand that is labled on the back is that of NOKO. NOKO produced this particular typer of postcard from 1907-1929. Being that the stadium was not completed with the track until 1925, we can date the image between 1925-1929. This very well may represent one of the first images of the 100% completed stadium.

Attached is the postcard as well as a photo of Folsom taken in July of this year. It is amazing how far CU athletics has come.
