Did none of the Pittsburgh papers do a special edition on January 1 about Roberto's death? I know I have my LA Times that I bought at the time.
|
I don’t think I’ve seen a special edition dedicated to his death.
|
Wow, this thread truly mirrors reality. Untold numbers of pages celebrating Roberto Clemente's career and all of the joy it brought to fans...and then BOOM!!!...a sudden turn of events at the end as he dies trying to help shattered people. So depressing. So realistic.

The eager crowd waits with great excitement, wondering what the grand finale on Day 365 is going to look like...

I am going to thank you in advance for posting all that great Clemente ! Forty Five ? years after his death, and we can all learn from him what it is to show sportsmanship and class on the field and to be a humanitarian off the field. It really sunk home with me when you posted the old newspapers. Such a sad day... I do remember it . I was only 7 but my Dad told me about it. Sad day... Just like when Thurman died tragically. Even at a young age I understood something really good was taken away from all of us. More than a baseball player.
Thanks Again Scott |
Thank you
Mike,
Thank you for your dedication to keeping this thread going for 365 days and posting your awesome collection!! I have many more items that were not shown and unfortunately not much time to scan and post them. That said I will try from time to time to add images of some more great Clemente items to keep this thread alive! Happy new year to all! Howard |

Please don’t get your hopes up too high, I hope not to end on a dud! |
Scott & Howard,
Thanks for the kind words. It’s been a long haul, but only a couple of days left. Also Howard, I know how things can get busy, but whenever you can, I’d love to see more of your collection. Maybe you can help me revive the thread from time to time. |
Wow, what a great thread to follow all year long and I respect the dedication it took to keep it going -- not only to post every day for a year straight, but to actually have a collection vast enough to share well more than 365 pieces of Clemente related memorabilia. Thanks very much for sharing!
If any player in history is worth such devotion, it is Roberto. |

Thank you CW! Day 364 I saved this next item for towards the end, hoping that I would have a chance to have it repainted by someone or even do it myself. But of course I never seemed to find the time to get it done. I have owned it for over twenty years, and thought that maybe it was a prototype. I’m sure that some young kid probably painted it years ago, but I couldn’t find any signs in the chipped areas that white, yellow or black were underneath so I thought maybe it was some type of prototype. Either way, I’ll probably have it restored because it just doesn’t look right in blue. I’ve only seen 1 or 2 examples of this statue in all the years I’ve collected Clemente. Sorry for the small pic, it’s the only one I have available to post. 1970s Tuscany Studios statue... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...canyStudio.jpg |

Tuscany statue

Super rare statue mike. I too have only seen 1 or 2 others. Here is one with dare I say a different paint job. Also an exhibit display piece with uncut strips including Clemente and Mantle.
Empty - ask away........ |

Great statue Howard! Thanks for sharing |

Mike this has been one of my favorite threads on Net54. Thanks for sharing your amazing collection. That Tuscany statue is awsome. This is the first time I have ever seen one. I saved my most rare piece for this day for obvious reasons. I purchased it a couple of years ago and paid far too much. Nonetheless, it was produced in Venezuela and is the only one I have ever seen. Thanks again for a very fun thread. I hope you and Howard continue adding to it.

Hi Mike, long time, no hear. Thanks for sharing that incredible pennant! Have never seen another. I have overpaid for many things, but if it makes you smile, that’s all that matters. |
Day 365
Finally made it to 365! Even though this is the end for now, I will definitely revive the thread from time to time, as I continue with the collection. I hope to see more items from Howard, Mike, rats and any others who want to share. I always enjoy seeing rare items, especially items I haven’t seen before. I want to thank all those who contributed to the thread and for all the kind words along the way. I truly appreciate it and hope you’ve enjoyed the ride. I started this thread with a painting my neighbor had created for me, gifted to me by my oldest daughter. And, in the hopes of not being anti-climactic, I’m going to end with another painting. While it’s no Kreindler, this was painted by me during my brief (VERY brief) attempt at “creating” Clemente art. I painted it in 2000, the fourth and final Clemente piece I did. The others were mostly laughable, but I thought this one turned out okay. So without further ado, here is my creation... https://photos.imageevent.com/docpat...ArtworkMJP.jpg |
Hey Doc, I just want to say thanks for a great thread for the year. I've read every post and looked at every pic, and I don't even collect Clemente.

Clemente
Mike,
I have very much enjoyed the ride. This past weekend I went through all of the posts “again” and had a nice time in review. Such fine Clemente items being shared with other collectors. Thanks so much for the time spent sharing your collection as well as all of the others who have added their items as well. Made for such an enjoyable year. This was a thread that I looked forward to viewing on a consistent basis; thank you. By the way I really like your painting. That is a very cool and unique style you have there; keep it up. I’ll look forward to other items being added periodically as well. Hope you have a wonderful New Year! |
Slow, building golf clap for Doc's efforts in this thread...turning into a thunderous standing ovation by year's end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well done, sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Thanks Mark & Darren, and thanks for helping breathe life into the thread at times!

A few more....

One of these I think I may have posted before - the Youth Symphony Album - The rarest of the items ( A ticket and program are the other items) from this one day event.
Next up is the original art from Clemente's only painted Sporting News Cover. Then an uncut 1970 Kellogs sheet with CLemente and A complete corn flakes box from 1970 featuring an image of Clemente on the back. |

I was about to post my first "image by request" suggestion, then it occurred to me maybe it's already in the thread and I missed or forgotten it--or that others will run into the same problem in scouring 90+ previous pages of material... so I am currently cut/paste building a comprehensive text list of everything here for quicker reference. (I know the site has a basic search function of course, but I've had limited luck searching forum-based sites using keywords, because it's laborious and fraught with various search inconsistencies like spelling idiosyncrasies, etc.). Anyway, I hope what I'm doing will prove useful to someone and end up being somewhat less onerous than every individual going back over every page one by one looking for an image of one particular item. (I'm about 1/4 finished and figure it will take quite a few more hours.) |
That is a great idea and a laborious undertaking! I always thought it would be nice to have a community album for threads like this. Thanks for all the time and effort.

Yep to the size guess apparently, since the Greiner set just recently hit the pop report, presumably permitted for grading now due to the recent addition of the 8x10 size slab that's been suggested for so long... |

(apologies to all for now digging up the older thread entries, but seeing as I'm going through them on by one for my project, new things are surfacing) So, your '52 scorecard which you acquired 'long ago' seemed earliest to you like you mentioned, which made the description from this 2009 Leland's item seem lame, since they added to the lot title "Earliest Known": https://auction.lelands.com/bids/bidplace?itemid=48357 But then I came across this 2005 Leland's item which is a '50-51 scorecard and they report references Clemente (though the image file is too small for a proper look to me), which suggests 2 things, 1) that their lot description writers in 2009 weren't doing as much diligence as they could even researching their own records and 2) about his playing in '51, further bolsters the evidence in the questionnaire you captured: https://auction.lelands.com/bids/bidplace?itemid=22172 (ok, it suggests a third thing too, for your scorecard, but let's not dwell on that) |

Howard, love the original artwork. Where did you find that gem? |
Wow!

Doc - Years ago Mastro had a sale with a whole bunch of the original art for the SN painted covers - I had the Seaver (subsequently sold it) and the Clemente - hanging on my wall! |

Thanks, Doc! :) |

Given your reluctance described above to slab your regular size complete Bazooka boxes, have you reconsidered that lately in light of the new "jumbo" size PSA holders, where I presume they would fit? Or do we even know if that's how they have switched to handling them? |
Will not take the chance
Quote:
Further, I suspect till someone points out to them that the boxes might fit with unfolded flaps into the larger holder, they would continue to put them in the smaller holders! That said, I expect to see (and ultimately submit) some additional larger items (mostly team issued stuff that they will likely mislabel if they choose to holder them at all). |
