Sid is a centerpiece in this very good SCD article on the 53 set by George Vrecheck

Hey, how did this number get into my set?

Just a teaser here. Don't mean to hijack the thread this close to the end, but wondered what someone might think of this effort. It is far from an exact replica, in fact, it contains several obvious flaws and one very intentional tell to distinguish it from a real card. I'm thinking about posting all six to eight of the "missing high numbers" in another thread for anyone's dining and dancing pleasure.:)

Steve---I do not care if you post the "missing" cards here or in another thread but would like to see them. Are they your creations ?

Leslie E. "Les" Peden. "Gooch". Catcher with the Washington Senators in 1953. 7 hits and 1 home run in his only MLB season.

One of my favorite cards in my favorite set. He is 25 in this pic but looks 20. Whole future ahead of him. Great card!

Another oddball replicard...

The next entry in my reconfigured high number sheet. It's pretty tricky trying to get them in the right juxtaposition with the total number of 280, let alone more than that.;)

Hooter and Harry....

Hard to figure what Topps was doing with the last sheet. The problem didn't seem to be guys changing teams in early '53, since they had portraits of some that were pulled (in their new duds) and not of others. Maybe it was simply guys holding out for their kids to get a year's supply of gum?

One more replicard...

I wonder if Topps dropped Billy because they thought he would be replaced at third base by Jackie in '53 to make room for Gilliam at second. Billy certainly wasn't traded away that year, in fact, he had a pretty good year, especially in the '53 Series against the Evil Empire.
