Day 282

I really like the simplicity of the original 1960s Hartland statues and the way they actually look like the player. Even though a newer issue, I think the 1990s issued Clemente has the look and feel of the originals. The 2006-07 issues, not so much.

This looks like the place to ask if anyone knows what these were cut from. I’m guessing it is from some sort of outer packaging.

Matt,

I have been collecting Clemente for a long time and have never seen those items before. They both have that "fantasy piece" look to me. I could be wrong, as there are always items that I haven't seen, but that's my initial impression.

Hi Mike,

I have been collecting Clemente since my teens and I hadn’t seen them either. My reason for thinking they aren’t fantasy pieces is where they came from. I’ve done my work on them and to the best of my abilities they seem legit. I hope it’s not my inner child speaking though.

Need more info and better scans

Hi Matt,

Welcome to the board. The images were used on a number of different items. Would be helpful if you could - 1- provide better and closer scans of the front and back, 2- Provide dimensions and paper stock and 3 - fill us in on "where they came from" that makes you believe they are legit. All the best.

Howard

Laxcat 10-09-2018 07:25 PM

Not at home right now so I need to measure when I am. I ran them by a few old timers on the hobby, including my father who has been in the business since 1961. I grew up in a card shop. These came from Jim Beckett. I’ll get better scans up when I can.

Similar to the photos I posted yesterday, this next photo (not mine) is a 1966 photo without the overprint.

It wasn't until this year that I saw a photo with the red KDKA & Foodland overprint on it. It was in rough shape but I was happy to add it.

And as it always seems to happen, after having never seen one and purchasing it, a nicer one appeared a few months later so I was able to upgrade.

I’m sure it was taken during the ‘72 season since in the background it’s advertising an upcoming game on July 16th vs. the Astros (which occurred in ‘72).

Also, IF the Sonnett box was connected to the Clemente glove, that would be pretty rare as well ( no where near as cool as your rawlings box though :)) Agree the rest of the store gloves are no big deal ( I still have my sub collection of store model gloves and believe I have 40+ different ones)

The exact same Clemente Rawlings Advisory Staff photo appeared on eBay. I was not going to miss out on the same photo twice. I am thrilled to finally add one to my collection.

Saw it. Had a lowball bid in just to ensure it didn't sell too low (~$200). GREAT item! First I've seen in a long time. Enjoy it.

Irv,

You learn something new every day. I think there’s a signed document on eBay right now where he signed Roberto Clemente Walker.

clydepepper 10-28-2018 02:07 PM

I hope it's okay to share this story (lifted from SABR bio page):

Yankees (and former Met and Pirate) 2B Neil Walker's father was Tom Walker a right-handed pitcher in the 1970's and this is his connection to Roberto:

'Walker and Moore decided to play winter ball in Puerto Rico, along with Expos pitcher Balor Moore and some members of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Roberto Clemente was their manager. Years later Walker felt fate entered his life again. On December 31 Clemente planned to fly in a plane carrying supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Clemente told Walker and the other players to stay behind and enjoy New Year’s Eve in Puerto Rico.

That night Clemente’s plane burst into flames shortly after take-off and plunged into the dark waters. Walker said he would forever remember that day and how the island was devastated. Clemente’s fellow Puerto Ricans revered him. Out of respect for their fallen hero, the league canceled the balance of the season.

“I can still remember it like yesterday,” Walker said. “We left the airport and it was the last time I ever saw Roberto Clemente. He saved my life by not letting me get on the plane.”

Mark, I try to avoid buying large items anymore, but when I would see nice store model bats at shows, I would purchase them. I never tried to clean them as they were fairly presentable already. I do have some lower condition bats as well.

Mike, it has some defects that can’t be seen in the photo, but until I can upgrade, it will have to do. Normally, I dont worry about trying to upgrade, but the defects bother me on this one.

71buc 11-06-2018 05:28 PM

It's better than mine so let me know when you upgrade:cool:

docpatlv 11-06-2018 08:13 PM

Trust me, it’s not. The paper photo under the laminated portion of the pin is vey wavy (warped), not sure how that happened. The laminated portion is not flush with the paper photo and I think that’s how the paper became wavy.

71buc 11-06-2018 11:22 PM

Mine is missing the laminate but the paper is firmly affixed to the button. That issue with the lamination may be a design error? That might account for the scarcity?
