Some really fantastic pieces everyone! Tony as usual your collection amazes. And Bryan love that CJ sign! Where the heck did you find it? Give us some details!

Jobu 05-08-2018 01:33 PM

Thanks AJ! It came from someone in Indiana.

I actually might end up selling it as I am finding that I only have room for a few framed items and this one might not make the cut. It is pretty fun to have discovered what is the only the third of these signs (that I have been able to track down).

Compact open......and it's empty....cigarettes went up in smoke :)

Hey guys,

I've always wondered why no Sports or Non-Sports cards were ever issued with the Chesterfield brand ?

Anyone on this forum have any thoughts on this mystery ? ?

Liggett & Myers introduced this brand in 1912, packaging these cigarettes in the standard pack.

Piedmont store display

1 Attachment(s)
Here is one for you NY Giants and Polo Grounds guys. Has anyone ever seen this Piedmont Cigarette store display? It is a massive 31" x 60" in size and double-sided. The other side is plain white with Piedmont Cigarettes logos and advertising for 10 and 20 count packs. The old Polo Grounds stands with the crowd is awesome.

There are slots in the piece. It looks as if something hung on it over the baseball infield portion of the advertisement. The white infield is an original part of the litho. I would really like to find out whether a rack hung on it with cigarette packs. Or was it a 3D baseball scene? If anyone has any idea, please reply!!

Thanks Jonathan, the height is 15.5" and the length is 11", width is 3.5"

I am not sure how to display it yet, I would welcome any thoughts?

Tony, great pickup!

canjond 08-23-2018 09:51 AM

It may fit into an acrylic Wheates box display case. May be an easy way to display and protect it.

Thanks Jon, I have tried the normal cereal sized box but it does not fit. I am sure I can find something similar online somewhere but I was looking for something a bit more....something :)

You might consider getting a museum mount made for it. If you display it as you would a sculpture, it will emphasize its three-dimensionality, which, in my opinion, is what really makes it special. Viewers should be able to walk around it and appreciate it from multiple angles.

This is perfect Paul, do you happen to have a name of this or a good place to order one?

sphere and ash 08-23-2018 03:14 PM

I’m glad you like the idea, Bob. I’ve always admired the Matty Tuxedo box for its sculptural quality, and thought that treating it like a sculpture was the way to go. I don’t have any specific recommendations for a mount maker. I think there are several makers who could do it very well. They key is to experiment with different angles and see what works best.

Very nice Bob and Tony! Those are fantastic pieces, especially the Tuxedo.

I am not sure what this is, but it appears to be hand painted and measures 9" x 11". I assume a tobacco store owner made it for the window or the door.

1880nonsports 08-24-2018 05:41 PM

hmmmm

I wouldn't think the sign to be painted by or offered by the store owner. Possibly a jobber but most likely the company itself. Lorillard around since the 1700's and they weren't likely to leave such signage (modest as it is) to the purveyor. I have seen something quite similar - will need time to access the memory :-)

That Tuxedo box is spectacular......

Pretty stoked to have picked this up earlier this week.

Joe_G. 11-11-2018 06:27 AM

That is a great pack Jon! Congrats again on an amazing pick-up. The September 1886 tax stamp cancel would place that just a couple months before Goodwin & Co. transitioned to slide & shell packs.

Here are a couple other packs that Henry recently parted with. I love how Goodwin used the seal strips to help secure not only the side seam but cover the top of the pack. In the case of Old Judge the seal strip also wrapped around the bottom of the pack. When they transitioned to slide and shell packs they continued to print this seal strip on the slide although it didn't help seal anything (merely printed). Both of these paper packs date to 1884 (Aug. 1, 1884 cancel on Old Judge pack, March 1, 1884 cancel on Welcome). I believe the Welcome brand would be discontinued by Goodwin by the time they transitioned to slide and shell packs (card distribution).

Joe_G. 11-11-2018 06:39 AM

The Old Judge paper pack and the graphic used on the slide and shell are nearly identical. When you overlay a slide and shell pack (this is an 1887 20 count slide & shell box) over the earlier paper pack you see they are same size and nearly identical in design. I went 50% transparent on the slide & shell so you can see both packs at the same time.

Hello Greg, nice coupon; good to see others take interest. I'm up to 14 different A&G coupons (pre ATC merger). My favorite is the following which advertises the World’s Champions album (A16 - album of the N28 cards). I'm not aware of another copy but certain others must be out there.

Agreed. And this one has everything...
desirable advertising, high quality lithography and even an important historical figure.

Happy to post this one. The colors are pretty amazing and I have not found another. 11 x 17. It's missing it's metal top and bottom borders but doesn't really matter much. I'd guess circa 1888. Gotta love the copy; so literal.

Thanks for looking. -peter
