1969 topps completed……..

I normally like to piece together a set from different lots but had the opportunity to buy a completed set and upgrade to my OCD standards are happy. I quickly focused on my needs/upgrades and had a blast picking them up. Im down to needing 3 cards for my set happiness. . I haven’t decided if I want to do the white letters (minus mantle) ……probably not :) not that many E/V’s so that should be fun…….

Topps 1969

Here is one variations/EV list for 1969 ( 3 pages long) but there are a boatload of recuring print defects not listed here

Trying to get PSA to recognize some variants for the Mays Master Set...

Just under 72% completion!

ALR-bishop 03-18-2025 12:53 PM

What are the variants, or maybe that is proprietary until you see what they do ?.

Nothing proprietary it just may be all for moot depending on what they decide.

#1 was for the 1950-70 MacGregor Willie Mays - I noticed that there are some out there with a New York Giants hat and jersey and others with a San Francisco Giants hat and jersey. The glove seems different as well so maybe it was a for a different ad campaign at a later date?

#2 was for the 1962 Salada coins - there are two different backs. One back lists "200 baseball coins" which seems more common. I'd like them to recognize the "180 baseball coins" back which I purchased on the B/S/T forum here.

ALR-bishop 03-19-2025 12:05 PM

Do you in include the 54 “white band” Mays ?

Not familiar with this, what is it?

The white band seems more that a brief recurring print defect since it can be found on so many of his 54 cards. It been discussed in other threads here and in pre war

Thanks for sharing! I never noticed that my 54 Mays copy does in fact have the white band. I've been wanting to upgrade my PSA 1.5 so when I do so I'll look for one without the white band.

I got back into collecting in late 2010 and started building sets at the start of 2011. The second set I completed that year was 1974 Topps. Not long after I decided to work on the master set, but card 599 (San Diego small print) always eluded me. To be perfectly candid, I rarely gave it much thought and when I did I found that the card was selling for $30 or more. It wasn't that I couldn't afford it, but I was just loath to spend that kind of coin on a common card*

Fast forward 14 years and a good friend just sent me that card, so now I have completed the master set.

* It seems rather quaint now that I would be so reluctant to spend $30 on a common since I am trying to build 1967 Topps and am mostly down to high numbers (I'm looking at you, Mike Shannon)

ALR-bishop 03-21-2025 05:58 PM

The older I get the harder it is for me to spot/see large v small print variants like that one :). Congrats on 74 and good luck on 67

DHogan 03-21-2025 07:05 PM

I only have 9 more common cards to finish a high grade 1971 baseball. I needed something to make me crazy. My favorite set is my 1967 baseball set. I remember the nuns in catholic school confiscating them from me in 3rd grade.

ALR-bishop 03-22-2025 08:54 AM

Dave---depending on which cards and how many they took it might make those nuns guilty of felony theft ;)

That might be the reason you don't see many nuns around anymore. They're all living the good life some where. :D

CardBoredom 03-22-2025 07:33 PM

Just hit 75% on my 1952 Topps project with the addition of Card #278 Al Clark.

Zach Wheat 03-27-2025 03:30 PM

Nice. A fun set to collect

Picked up this 1972 Fleer Baseball Quiz card recently. This is my 30th different yellow version. The checklist I have lists 34 different so 4 more to go.

I am not actively pursuing the white version with no team logos. I have 5 of those but only get them when I find them for under $10.

I can confirm 34 yellows with 4 being very tough. I have 28 Whites, and hope that's all of them

Al - Thanks for confirming the total number of yellow ones is 34.

I am going to see how many white versions are available on the internet and decoide if I will go after them.

Picked up 10 more 1953 Topps this weekend in Chantilly. Now needing 91 to complete the set with 48 of those in tough 4th series.

Zach Wheat 04-08-2025 09:43 AM

Set update - regarding the 1952 Topps 3rd series gray backs. I am now 3 away. What surprises me is that the more questions I answer about the set the more questions I have...it's not supposed to be that way

Zach---that is an amazing accomplishment on the gray backs. Can not imagine there are too many complete runs of those

Here are the 4 yellow quiz cards that in my experience were much harder to find than the other 30

Al -

Thanks for posting the 4 yellow variations that were hard to find for you.

Of those 4, I have 2 and need 2.

1968 Topps Baseball Game Cards: Mantle; Rose; Torre
1969 Topps Baseball Stamp Album: Twins with stamps attached
1970 Topps Baseball Scratch Offs: Beckert; Bosman
1971 Topps Baseball Scratch Offs: will probably purchase it complete
1971 Topps Baseball Coins: 22; 53; 54; 57; 58; 61; 73; 74; 76; 77; 80; 84; 87; 88; 98; 101; 125

1965 topps 3rd set is now done….mr mantle the last card is on its way…..fun set….nothing really hard

1969 topps set is completed (I bought it that way lol)…..with only one more upgrade needed…. Mr koosman

Next set is maybe 1968 topps or a 2nd 1964 topps set…..it’s a toss up. I have 4th-7th series 64 done so that might be a leader?

IndyDave 04-18-2025 03:49 PM

I unexpectedly finished two sets at Strongsville. Hadn't been planning to find either.

1970 Milton Bradley

1965 Fleer Hogan's Heroes.

Need 4 1951 Topps Blue Backs.

ALR-bishop 04-18-2025 08:35 PM

Dave—- that is a fascinating group of sets

Picked up the last card I needed to complete my 1952 Topps gray back run. I honestly thought I would never finish....could not have done this without help from a number of N54 friends - Ted, Billy and Dale thanks for keeping an eye out and searching auction sites.

Fini!

ALR-bishop 04-24-2025 02:52 PM

Congratulations!!! Any idea how many other complete gray back runs there are? I don't remember seeing one in an auction.

Thanks all. I know of at least 1 other, and probably 2 others. As for a complete run of the gray back, glossy fronts - I believe there are 60 (not 61 as in the gray backs). I do not believe anyone has a complete run of glossies.

Surprisingly, the deeper I dug into the set, the more questions that popped up, refuting some long-held assumptions.

darkhorse9 04-27-2025 02:08 PM

I finally got the last card I needed for the 1961 Post Cereal set (Chuck Estrada)
I now have the 1961 and 1962 sets done ,but I'm 13 short prints away from the 1963 set

I am still working on my NMt-y 65T set, but I am getting farther away from finishing. I thought I was down to 40 cards, but then I made the mistake of looking through what I had, and I found about 60 cards that need to be upgraded. So now I have 100 to go. Here is my Mantle, and my latest pickups.

Last Sunday evening I made several eBay purchases myself which allowed me to complete the '65 set I'd been working on. Now I'm waiting like a little kid on Christmas Eve for the mail every day. This has to be, IMHO, the nicest looking set of the 1960s. 1967 is great, as is 1961, and I know a lot of people love 1962, but these are beautiful.

Big J 05-01-2025 08:14 PM

Congrats on the 52's and 65's guys. I like the look of the 65 set also. I am 23 cards away from a 55 Topps set, including the print variations. I still need the big rookies and a few of the other stars. I am also about a third of the way into a 54 Topps Scoop set and I already have the Ruth. Good luck hunting for the rest of your sets everyone.

danx 05-02-2025 09:43 AM

Finally getting closer on completing my 72 Topps Set - 5 to go: Bench, Rose, Ryan and Bahnsen/Reed on the high numbers. Been a journey.

Was thinking of shifting back to focusing on 71 Topps, but may need a break from the high number insanity and will probably work on completing the 78 Topps, instead.

Rounding out the tails on a 70s set run - have had 73-77 done for a while.

ALR-bishop 05-02-2025 09:52 AM

Congrats on 65 Dewey

Jay---also congrats, the 69 Super set ( odd name for little cards) is one of my favorites....other than that horrible Pete Rose

Ben---on 55 variants, have you seen this site ?

Finally completed my 1959 Topps Set. The last card was #564 Mantle AS. My set totals 612 cards as I have included variations and some print variants.

Attachment 660361

This is probably the last large Topps set I'll complete. The ones I don't have complete either would be too expensive to complete or I am not really interested in the set/design.

So now I am working on the set of 1961 Fleer Pennant Decals (have 16 of 48) and 1965 Topps Transfers (have 20 of 73). The 65 transfers are the only insert set from 1965 to 1970 (when I collected as a kid) that I have not completed.

Mike

ALR-bishop 05-08-2025 02:31 PM

Mike---congrats on the 59 set. It is the first one I finished and a sentimental favorite

The 65 Transfers are sure delicate. Much different form the 66s. There is one true variation , Hunt shown at 2B or SS

Don't know many others that collect the 61 Fleer pennants. The team logos seem to be more popular

Finished the 1958 Hire's Root Beer test (no tabs) and 1971 Topps sets. if i could do it over, would have went for the 1971 O-Pee-Set set instead.

also completed most hoops set from 1969/70 to 1981/82, 1984-85 Star, and need 1 card (Barkley) for 1985-86 set.

1962 Topps Stamps - need 12
1955 Red Man - need 2 (Musial and Mays)
1963 Post baseball - need 13

Yes, 65T is a great-looking set. As a kid I remember I really liked the pennants with the team names.
