Bob Feller once said Hemsley was a better catcher drunk than most catchers who were sober. And he was apparently drunk a lot. Found his way to AA late in his career and stopped drinking, but became controversial within AA for breaking the anonymity tradition as a spokesperson for it.

His baseball career never lived up to early high expectations. He ended up in jail a few times and during a post baseball career as a cab driver was robbed twice and shot

Sorry, missed a day there...

This card is actually special to me. When I was 12 years old in 1982 I had picked this card out of a Becket price guide and requested it at our local card shop. The card shop was an hour drive away, which back then made it pretty much inaccessible...so visits there were rare. I wanted an OLD card and I wanted something from an OLD team...the shop had the card and at school I was a hero for having something from 1954! I don't remember what I paid, but I do remember it took most of my budget that day. Through the years I never would get rid of this card...and it sits in my set today. Cards have come and gone...not this one. And won't. Was looking forward to posting it!
