1966 Sealed team photo pack

I know there are a lot of questions about the 1966-1971 color issues - while I can't resolve them all, I believe I can shed some light.
This is a sealed 1966 team set

1971 team set

2 Attachment(s)
I have not seen this one around. It is similar to what PSA identifies as a 1971 set, but the coloring is much whiter. This is sealed in the original bag.

1970? 1971?

2 Attachment(s)
PSA identifies this as 1971 - It could be or possibly 1970. This is a sealed pack with no year identifier on the back.

These have slightly different textural , size or cropping differences - I presume them to be various appearance or team issues (except the postcard - no idea there!)

Awesome resource Howard. I recall asking before but we didn't finish the discussion: your sense of why PSA will authenticate/label some of these but not others? Is it just a question of what they can know for sure, and if they are unsure about provenance then the default is to not be willing to slab at all and therefore not include in the master list?

There is no obvious rhyme or reason why they do what they do. They claim to only grade items that are listed in a major price guide (Becket or Standard Catalog). How they "think" they can tell the difference between 66-67-68 autograph cards - I don't know - I can't (They don't even have a 1966 graded - or did they mislabel another year?). The fact that they do accept some but do not accept or recognize ALL of the Jay publishing and team issues as identified above - I don't know. Just requested they grade the '56 - they refused. They grade some variations and stupid things like the mini cutouts from the Transogram box, but don't grade other legitimate variations like the 180 back Salada or the wide border 69 Nabisco flakes.
Read the forums for a little while and you will see the general consensus on consistency of their qualitative grading as well. I've gotten stuff back from them and just shake my head sometimes - items that are solid nrmt - come back with a 4-5 grade.
For selling - they are a necessary "evil". For collecting they are a choice - I chose to work on a registry set because I got bored with so little to look for. I am not looking to get 100% complete on it. I have complete bazooka boxes from every year (but 1960) - I don't care about the panels (except 71 numbered) or singles. I will not even send in my 68 or 71 boxes as PSA will bend a flap to fit into their holder!!
Why they do what they do? Because people like me keep sending them money to do it:confused::cool:

Thanks for all the great info Howard. It is a little confusing between the Jay Photos and team issued B&Ws.

The Jay Publishing from 1955-1957 just say "Pirates". From 1959-1965 The Jays say "Pittsburgh Pirates". The Sports Service/Team issues started in 1960 or 1961 and only say "Pirates" - that's the easiest way to tell the difference between the 2 - narrowing down the year - that took a LONG time!

Howard,

Love the team issue and Jays! Please post again when you get them back from PSA. I think these are under appreciated, but I really like them.

Is the postcard a Jim Rowe? The writing on the back looks similar to the one’s I have.

I think that is a 1971 issue. I purchased series A and B individually in sealed packs. I later purchased the undated Blue card from a collector who was breaking up a complete set. His set did not have the Series A and B checklists. He claimed to be the original owner and that they were purchased as a complete set without the checklists.

Nice Darren! Was that on eBay recently? There was a miscut that I had been watching. Didn't pull the trigger, then it was gone. Anyway, great card.

I've seen pictures of Bill Mazeroski's 1960 World Series HR countless times and I've always wondered if Roberto was in the large group waiting for Maz to cross home plate. However, I had never really made an attempt to identify Clemente until I purchased this next item. With a little bit of research I've determined that, sure enough...he's there!:D He's the third player from the left (without his ball cap). Note the man behind him in the white shirt with his hands on Roberto's back.

The following photos were found online and helped me positively ID Roberto...

Photo shows Maz approaching home with Dick Schofield (# 11) and Hal Smith (# 5) waiting at home, with Roberto just to the right. Note the man/boy in the white shirt standing directly behing Clemente with his hands on Roberto's back.

One of my favorite Topps insert sets from the 60s. I remember trading for these in junior high. Hands were flying, but I was able to grab Reggie Jackson among others.

I scrolled through all 70 of the pages of this thread. I did not see one of these pins posted. I purchased two Clemente pinbacks the other night. My suspicion that one was home made unfortunately was confirmed on the memorabilia side. This one looks right to me. However I was posting it here to determine if anyone has seen another of these pins. Thanks!

Sorry about the pins Mike, hope you aren't out too much. If you bought them off of eBay, you can probably get a refund. There are a lot of fantasy pins of Roberto out there. They really didn't issue a lot of pins of him during his playing days.
