Mark,

Wow. I love it. My guess is that it is from either 1977 or 1979. I'm leaning towards 1979. I have the reports from 1978 and 1981. The 1978 is plain. The front looks more like the style used in 1981. Kate Patrick was in the Baseball Dept from 1977-1979. Too bad it's empty. :(

A couple of Bazooka items that I don't think have been posted yet.

The 1959 Bazooka Gus Triandos and Hot Iron Transfer. The 1959 Bazooka cards are hard to find, but Triandos is a short print, so he doesn't show up as much as some others. I'm happy with the cut of mine.

Regarding the iron on...is it large in size?

Day 73 (March 13, 2020 – 073)

Today we have an advertising photo of Brooks in a nice suit along with a model. Does this photo scream the 70’s or what?!? I love the background color used in this photo as well as just the overall look. I’m not 100% sure, but I believe this is a photo used to advertise Hamburgers (not the food) the retailing clothing chain. I recall a Hamburger store where my father used to shop located in the Charles Center. Hamburgers ultimately closed shop in the early 90’s. Of course this photo relates to baseball as well; can’t you see Brooks with a baseball in his hand…

I don't know about you guys, but I really like the first year Oriole jerseys. It may be because you just don't see them that often; just cool looking in my eyes. Of course I LOVE the jerseys after the first year as well!

Also, I enjoy seeing pictures of players in Oriole jerseys wearing the number of a player that is remembered for wearing that jersey number. In this instance you have Fitzgerald wearing #19 and I just associate that number with McNally. I still haven't seen a picture of an Oriole, other than Brooks, wear #5 (except Frank for a photo when he first arrived in B'more). I know there were a few prior to Brooksie to do so.

I thought I would contribute a few Oriole items to Mark’s thread. All are related to the 1971 Series. I picked up these ticket stubs from the original owner. I love the writing on them. They each tell a story. The green press pass is very cool because game 2 was a rain out and the rain drop stains reflect that it was there. The original Type 1 Brooks and Pops photo originated from the estate of the designer of those funky 1970s bullpen carts. A few years back I purchased a hundred slides from the James Drake collection. He covered the series for sports illustrated. These are a few shots he took of the Orioles. The Louisville Slugger black bats originate from the collection of James O’Toole who was the Assistant to GM Joe Brown. The snapshot of the Pittsburgh celebration is not original but it’s so 70s and tacky I love it nonetheless. The parking pass was a gift from Mark the author of this post. Thanks again Mark! I have posted the mint in box Clemente and Robinson Rawlings WSS Special Glove before. Its one of my favorite items so indulge me please. In 1972 The Bucs played the Orioles in what was billed as Game 8 of the 1971 World Series. The ticket sales went to Children's Hospital. Sorry Mark the Bucs won that one too. The stub and program are a tough find. You can’t have a 1971 Series post without The Great One . Here he is in all his glory as captured by James Drake’s camera.

Mike,

Those of course are some GREAT items shown; thanks so much for posting all of them. You already know that the WSS Glove box is a favorite of mine, BUT those tickets are AWESOME! From a personal perspective, at times, I like when there is writing on memorabilia items and this is one of them.

Hopefully you've already seen on this page items commemorating the '71 Series; most from an Oriole perspective, but the '71 Series just the same. Hopefully you've enjoyed them.

This '71 third party scorecard has already been posted recently, but here's the example from my collection. Hope you already have this one in your tremendous collection.

This Transogram advertising cardboard piece is from 1969 and features the American League players that were in the collector series of figures. As you can probably see they have Frank listed as Brooks and Brooks listed as Frank. Reminds me of a Frank quote: "I don't see why you reporters keep confusing Brooks (Robinson) and me. Mark,

I remember those figures well as a kid. I didn't really care for them then and still have a hard time warming up to them. As an 11 year old, I was more interested in the cards on the back, so my boxes got all cut up and the figures didn't last the riggers of play. I may attempt to pick up unopened boxes again someday.

Here's the rest of the 1969 Orioles and the tougher 1970 Boog Powell. I think mom cut out the Boog Powell card.

1957 Stockton Ports

3 Attachment(s)
As most of you have noticed, I have put together a nice collection of Orioles minor league affiliate items. However, the most glaring holes in my minor league collection are the Stockton Ports. The Ports were affiliated with the Orioles from 1956-1971, except for a one year break in 1958 when they were a St Louis Cardinals affiliate. For some reason, Ports material just hasn't found it's way into the hobby in any quantity. I have a few items, but am always looking to add to it.

1956-1957 were interesting years for the Ports and I'll be discussing the 1957 team today. Mainly because I don't have anything from 1956.

The Stockton Ports played in the California League and were a Class C affiliate. They finished a disappointing 61-79. While the 1956 team featured Ron Hansen, the 1957 team didn't produce any future O's.

1957 Program

Attachment 389304

One of the most interesting facts is mentioned in their program. While most teams have a major league working agreement, the Ports actually had an agreement with the Orioles AAA team, the Vancouver Mounties. Making them in fact a minor league team of a minor league team.

In 1960 and 1961, Leesburg Florida was the home of the Orioles Class D affiliate in the Florida State League. Neither team was very successful on the field, but did produce a couple future major leaguers.

That stadium doesn’t look like too great of a field. When I was in HS we had nicer fields to play on than in Leesburg.

Tri-City played in the Northwest League as a Class B affiliate and represented the cities of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland Washington. They finished a dismal 49-90 in front of an average of 544 fans.

Gordon Sundin and Steve Dalkowski both appeared for the team. Sundin appeared in one game for the Orioles in 1956, while Dalkowski could never find the strike zone enough to live up to the hype his fastball created.

Bill,

Very nice card. When I was young my dad would talk about Raymond Berry often and was his favorite receiver. He always said that Johnny U wouldn't have been the same without Berry. He became a favorite of mine due to my dad's influence. When we lived in MD a lot of the Colts current players used to work for the same company in the off season that my father did and some were employed after their retirement. He met and traveled with a number of Colt players during this time. He brought me autographs home quite often. I'm unsure what I did with all of the signed pieces I was given, but in several moves and years later I have no idea what happened to them.

1961 Little Rock Travelers

7 Attachment(s)
The Orioles Class AA affiliate in 1961 was located in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Travelers played in the Southern Association and finished with a record of 80-73. Compared to a few of the other O's affiliates, the Travelers played to a huge average crowd of 1,782.

The team featured a bunch of names that should be familiar to most die hard O's fans. Some played for the Orioles themselves and a few made their name for other teams. These included Cal Ripken Sr, Pat Gillick and Bo Belinsky, Jim Fridley and Bob Nelson. If I remember right, Little Rock produced another pretty good ballplayer. :D

Very nice. Would love to see some pics of your room or better yet stop by and say hi if I'm ever in your area. I bet it's quite impressive.

Hey Alan:

Anytime you find yourself in SE Pennsylvania, you're welcome to visit.

Funny story along these lines is that I sit on the Board of a local scholarship organization and our main fund raiser each year is a summer Golf Tournament which we invite about 20 or so former ballplayers, as well as a headliner or two.

This particular year one of our headliners was Lee Smith (pre HOF induction) and I volunteered to pick him up at the Phila. airport and to drive him to the hotel where everyone was staying.

For whatever reason we stopped at my home along the way and of course I had to take Lee down into the basement and he seemed to get a kick out of the things I had displayed.

Anyways, later that evening at the reception I was hanging around Lee and the head of the Orioles alumni group (as well as a former PR guy with the club) introduced himself to Smith and Lee shook his hand, pointed to me and said "By the Way, this guy has all your shit."

To this day, we still laugh at that story!

Dave Nicholson

Really like the Dave Nicholson 8x10. The attendance was better than the few previous posts...

I’m partial to street signs that’s for sure. Hopefully we’ll get to see all your signs eventually in the thread. The one pictured on the stairway is extremely nice.

Day 79 (March 19, 2020 – 079)

After Brooks’ playing days he remained with the team and was a popular member of the Orioles local television broadcast crew. I guess you would call this picture an oversized snapshot (5x7) of Brooks in his suit that was taken during this time frame.

The News American television program booklet from 1979. Brooks is wearing a suit in this one as well AND it’s from 1979 on Day 79 so I’m sure it relates in some way…

Thanks Bill. Love the team photo. I believe the front row also pictures Earl's son, Mike Weaver, as a batboy.

I always have a hard time deciding what to share. I guess this was a hint to talk Foxes.

As the photo suggests, the 1960 Fox Cities Foxes were a pretty good team. They finished 82-56 and were a Class B affiliate in the Three-I League, which was Illinois, Iowa and Indiana. The only problem with that is the Foxes resided in Appleton, Wisconsin. In fact, there were no teams from Illinois and Indiana, while teams from Nebraska, Kansas and Wisconsin had franchises in the league.

Here are a few other items from 1960.

Think we should have retained Chance when we had the option. Oh, well; he went on to have a pretty good career. I “think” I have a picture with Brooks and Chance somewhere.

Really like the Boog photo you chose today. Is that a team issue or just normal photograph?

Mark,

As I mentioned in a previous post, these small photos are actually part of sheets that the Orioles would provide to newspapers, magazines, etc. Many of them correspond to the Morton Tadder 8x10 photos and help to identify the year or range of years. Sometimes the same photo was used over a period of years. I'll check my duplicates when I get back to Maine.

Here are the Brooks Robinson sheets from 1967-1977.

Alan,

Thanks for checking for me once you return. Most of the small portrait shots that I have are small, cut from the sheets, but some are larger like the ‘66 I pictured. That one is around 3x5; do you think the newspaper’s just enlarged the photo from the sheet?

Good question. I've never seen one as big as 3x5. I suppose they could have enlarged the photo, depending what they needed it for in the newspaper.

Mark,

As a 6 year old, 1964 was the first year I paid much interest to baseball. My dad loved baseball, but didn't cheer for any particular team. Growing up in Maine, I didn't realize I was supposed to be a Red Sox fan. I fell in love with the Orioles and Brooks Robinson. I don't remember really collecting anything until a couple years later when I discovered baseball cards.

Here are a few programs from that memorable 1964.

The regular season programs featured Brooks Robinson on one of the covers and I've always wondered if the batter silhouette on the other program isn't also Brooks. Looks like a shaved helmet to me. :D

Hi Bill, no, although I saw that one on Ebay. I showed the McDougald bowl to my wife and she said if I bought that one, she wasn't going to be the one who cleaned the tarnish off of it.

The above bowl was passed down to me from my grandparents who bought it at an auction who knows how many years ago. Unfortunately, I don't know who the bowl was supposedly presented to.
