I have gone pretty much all pre war now, with emphasis on early gum sets. Some of these will take a while, but it will be a fun journey.

I recently picked up the last 2 1950 Bowmans without the copyright line that I needed to complete the set both with and without copyrights - 181 Pieretti and 194 Cox.

Last week I upgraded my '75 Mini Brett RC from a PSA 7 to this SGC 9. In this particular set, PSA graded cards go for a significant premium over SGC cards and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I understand it is registry-based and if you believe, as I do, that the two TPGs are basically on parity in terms of grading standards then there are a lot of solid deals to be had on SGC cards. I believe I got this card at 50% at what a PSA 9 would get these days.
https://i.imgur.com/xgOe5Sg.jpg Anyhoo, I'm up to 55 or so graded cards in this set, all graded 7 to 9. I still have a few more PSAs than SGCs, although the gap is narrowing. I have most of the factory short cards graded. Also grabbed a Yount and Ryan PSA 8 in 2023 as prices on these cards came down a bit, like pretty much all of post war vintage. Recently got a Munson and Hank Aaron #1 in SGC 8 for much less than the market price of PSA 8s. I continue to be FLABBERGASTED by the fact that Brett RCs in the mini cost generally around 90% the price of the full sized card apples to apples. There are more than 4x full sized PSA graded Brett RCs as opposed to the minis. I know....supply, demand. Still, I am quite certain the mini set remains undervalued relative to the full sized set and I look forward to continuing to upgrade in 2024 and beyond. Always looking for centered NMT+ ungraded minis as I probably have a good 50-60 cards that I still want to upgrade mostly due to centering issues. Thanks for reading if you made it this far. |
Jay---congrats on the Bowman no copyrights. The low end of that run is tough

1965 Topps set completed……….
Mr mantle has arrived. Fun set. Nothing was really hard to find, highs are cheap, so made it go by fast. 1961…..here we go!!!! |
Between raw, PSA, SGC, one BVG, and one CSG I'm currently at 56.5% of PSA's Willie Mays Master Set...
I think I've got all the low-hanging fruit but I'm always looking to buy, the odder the better! |

Picked up 6 more for my upgrade project on my 53 set. I am replacing cards that are creased, stained, or have terrible centering. If you have any in similar condition to what is pictured (vg/ex type) I can post a list :) Thanks! |

I've been working on my 1967-69 Topps Baseball sets. I found some great deals on commons from local shops, the show in Pasadena, eBay and through fellow collectors on Old Baseball Cards. Where I will run into difficulties will be the 68 Ryan and Bench; and in 69 it'll be Mantle, Ryan, and Jackson to start with. I am leaving th 67 high numbers alone.
When my friend gave me his childhood collection, many, many of the cards were creased. I'm upgrading the worst ones, plus most of my newer additions are VG/EX to EX. I'm thinking about bulking out my extras from 1971, 72, and 73 to see if I can raise the funds to get some of the major stars, unslabbed, in g to vg condition. These are going to be "rat rod" type of sets, ugly in some ways but still interesting to look at. Phil aka Tere1071 67 Topps Baseball 431/533 68 Topps Baseball 505/598 69 Topps Baseball 535/664 |

Since I resumed collecting in 2013, after a 30 year hiatus
I restarted with next to nothing as a collection. Since then:
1909-11 T206 short set, 518/518 1911 T201, sold and rebuilt with a mix of grades 1935 Goudey 4 in 1 1936 r312 49/50 1955 Topps complete 1958 Topps 202/494 1959 Topps 557/572 1960 Topps complete 1961 Topps 329/587 1962 Topps Master set 1963 Topps 248/576 1964 Topps 297/589 1964 Topps Giants complete 1965 Topps complete 1966 Topps 434/598 1967 Topps 426/609 1970 Topps 467/720 1972 Topps 480/787 1975 Topps459/660 I spent a full 18 months focused on the T206 and just could not see spending $$ on the Big 4 plus 2. Built the T201 in an average SGC grade of 82, sold a bunch and rebuilt. Just cannot seem to get my hands on a Johnny Mize R312. Bought a run of Clemente cards, graded, over time and decided to build the ‘55 Topps. The ‘62 and ‘65 were my favorites as kids, they got next. Loved the look of the ‘56 and ‘60 so I ended up focused on the ‘60. About 2018, my health took a powder and I decided I liked the look of handled cards so I am not as picky on “grade” but like nice registration. And eventually I resumed. Sidetracked a bit on modern cards- chasing Trout cards up the stream and have way too many (around 900) with way too many to go. Talking about an education. Modern/ultramodern is all about the Benjamins with next to nothing holding any value. So I buy lotsa Trout commons. In bulk when I can. Why the hell not? Oh yeah, also have a 800 count box of Japanese cards, all kinds, menko, bromides, Calbee, Etc etc. Again, why not? Just fun, just cool. More power to you all, Peace out. Keith |

Brings my modest 56 Topps run of Hall of Famers up to 7 |
Matt— who were the first 6 ?
:) Keith— interesting skip between 75 and 900 Trouts :). Impressive on T 206 . What was your checklist for 62 Master ? |
Just picked up a mint 600 card vending lot of 1976s and a nmmt complete set. I'm going to cherry pick the best of the best and build a gem set for my PC. The remaining 600+ nmmt cards will be available soon.
|
Thank you. In trying to upgrade I have accumulated more dupes (in lots) than I realized. I will be listing a large starter set of over 100 with about 40 hi#'s on BST soon. I hope I can sell them so then I can get the last 24 and be done :)
The whole process is fun though isn't it guys! Quote:

Looking for the last 8 cards to finish up my mint 1976 set. Anyone have these in nmmt to mint and centered 60/40 or better?
340 550 I have a NMMT but slightly OC Nolan Ryan as trade bait. |
1961 Topps set is going on now and I crossed the magical line of less than 100 to go………:)

Finished completing my 520 card T206 Set!!
I started collecting T206 cards back in 1989 at about $10 each, in poor/fair condition. Over the years I accumulated dozens of them, then scores of them, then decided to try to complete the set. Fast forward to 2020 (30 years later) and I finally completed the 520 card set (less the "Big 4"). I even purchased some of the high end and impossible find cards on here, net54baseball. The last two on my list were purchased here on net54 (Ray Demmit and Bill O'Hara - super expensive, even in fair +/- condition). Some of the high-end ones are graded of course, to ensure authenticity, and all cards range from poor to Ex+.
The cards are currently secured in a safe deposit box, and I visit them frequently, as it gives me joy to know I have done the near impossible, as well as knowing there can't be more than 300 complete sets on the entire planet, as 2 of the cards in the set are believed to have only about 300 in existence (then take away whom has just those cards (without completing the set), and I now likely have a set with less than 200 or so in existence!!). I have painstakingly used reference guides such as TuffStuff, t206.org, Beckett and many others, to create an Excel worksheet noting the cards, backs, prices, and so forth, and have it electronically (and physically) saved. According to price guides when I last valued them in 2020, it is valued at about $44,000.00. I think this is totally undervalued, as most price guides have really not kept up-to-date pricing on them. I have enjoyed this so much, but at my age, I think it's time to let it go (as a complete set), and let the next generation enjoy it, and potentially hand it down to the next generation. Well, that's my story!! While we're here, does anyone know the most correct, up-to-date price guide available (without joining something), and, whom to potentially reach out to, to sell it? I know there are scores of auction houses, etc., and I don't want to spend countless hours trying to deal with it, but a starting point would be good. |

1963 Topps Set
Got my last card today to finish off my 1962 set. Red Schoendienst high number 575 was put in the binder today. I wasn't real thrilled with the wood design on the 62s but they gradually grew on me and the Rookie cards are kind of garish and expensive for even no counting the Uecker card. Now it's on to the 1963 set. Thankfully I have my Mantle card #200 and the Rose rookie.

Congrats………
|
I just finished 1958 Topps. The last card was #310 - Ernie Banks. Next up is (God help me) 1967. I already have 75% of the non-high numbers, but only 7 of the 76 high numbers.
|
Congrats on finishing the 58 set. By the time I get enough courage to work on the 67 set I think I'll be in the same boat with basically needing to finish off the high number cards. I'm starting to look at both 66 and 67 as four sets and not two with the high sets being their own special challenge or something else.
|
I did 66 and 67…..67 seemed harder with the highs selling for more And I didn’t learn my lesson and did 2 more sets after the first lol. 66 wasn’t really hard some dumb highs but nothing to make you jump off a roof.
I’m now 9 cards away from finishing 1961 topps set…..average high common….20-30 range in Exmint or better……just remember to have fun |
Congrats on finishing the 58s! 67 is a fun challenge, I've done it twice...patience is the key. Interesting that Banks was your last card...mine was the Aaron/Mantle...I kept getting outbid, very popular card.
66, 67, now 61...great work Elberson...even a couple years past the journey it's still fun to go back and look through the journey! |

Only 3 mantles away from finishing off my 1961 topps set……small mountain to climb lol but doable…..I might go back and do another 1965 set since I have a lot of extras and complete 5th-7th series already…..than maybe 68 or 69 set?

1961 topps set is complete!!!! The last card finally arrived from authentication. Having the last 3 cards needed being mantles sucked but I was able to take my time and get all 6’s……not really a hard set to complete. The highs are dumb prices and stars aren’t that bad. Fun set but I think 66 was harder….im doing another 65 set with only 13 more to go and than 69 topps is next :)
|
Made slow progress on two sets:
Current sets I'm working on in my signature. |
Wow, great last 3 Mantles Elberson!!! Excellent cards...
Bigdaddy...will you mark your set complete without the Ted?? I have two Piersal's in my binder...I keep debating to myself if I need the Ted or not...:) Hey, I get to the be 1000 post on my own thread...:) |
Thanks John, it was fun but too many close ups….:)
Only 3 cards away from another 65 topps sets |

I've also just completed 1964 Topps Coins. I'm on the final stretch with my 54 Bowman, 55 Bowman and 56 Topps. |
Great job on finishing some nice sets everyone. I recently completed lower grade (1-3) 53 and 54 Topps baseball sets. I am two commons away from upgrading my 60 Topps to ex-mint/nm. I am thinking about starting a 55 set next in the 3-4 range.
|
Some nice sets being completed here, way to go guys! I’m currently working on a 59 baseball set in a mid grade condition. Under 80 cards to go.
|
59 was the first Topps set I finished and a sentimental favorite. There is a great thread on the 59 set on the CU board in the Registry section
|
Back in January I listed the progress of my 1967, 68, and 69 Topps Baseball Card sets. About three months ago, I decided to stop collecting the 1967 set as I will never be able to afford to complete the high numbers. I was able to assemble 521/533 in overall good condition, but among the missing are the Mantle, Mays, Aaron, and Clemente.
I have made progress on the 68 and 69 sets: I'm missing 19 cards to finish the 68 and 9 to complete the 69 sets. In each year I'm missing the Ryan, Mantle, Bench, and Carlton cards while I have a star in my 68 set that I don't have for 1969. I hope to work out a trade using my 1967 lot as well as using my extras from 1970-75, some 53 Bowman Color extras, and finally what I have left over from my Topps and Bowman Heritage collections. Each year finds me missing a few commons in the low and high numbers, but I've been reluctant to pull the trigger. For example, the 68 Agee (#465), and 69 McGraw (#601) are priced fairly high. I know both were members of the 69 Miracle Mets, but to purchase either of these from eBay, plus the shipping, means that I'll have to be patient and hopefully find one locally or through trade- hint, hint! (I broke my resolve the other day and won 68 Topps #528 (Tigers team) by placing a high bid that I thought no one else would come close to matching- I was wrong.) If anyone is interested in trading, I can send you my want lists of the needed star cards along with my lots which are listed numerically by year. They include semi and high numbers along with lower-tiered stars. Thank you and happy collecting! Phil aka Tere1071 |
67 is a fun set, don’t give up on it. Yes the highs suck and you can throw book value (for comparison purposes only) out the window because everything sells higher.
You can do it…….. :) 1969 topps will be my next set!!! |
Quote:
The difference now is the immediacy of being able to find cards through the Internet. Now, I want to get them out of the way, upgrading as I go along. Their monetary value has no concern, although I gulp at some of the asking prices. What I have been able to do since early 2000, has easily surpassed my late 60s to mid-70s collection. Nothing here would qualify as a registry set and the 67-69 cards would range overall from fair to vg/ex. The 67 set is an attractive set and it would be nice to complete the low numbers. My main goal is to finish the 68 and 69 sets and see where I will go from there. Thank you and happy collecting! Phil aka Tere 1071 |
1972 Topps, the postwar monster - not more card progress actually, I'm still sitting around 380 some cards out of the 787, but I did unexpectedly add a wrapper from '72 last week, when I made a placeholder offer on one for half of what the guy wanted - and he accepted it.
I've always like the idea of getting wrappers / packaging to go with vintage sets, but for a lot of my interests in the 1950's it's simply too expensive. Figured I had better get '72 before that era goes up as well. Looking forward to getting that one in the mail hopefully here later this week. |
My 59 Topps baseball set is coming along nicely. 35 cards to go. I just picked up Mantle and Gibson. Just a couple more Mantles and Mays then it’ should be easy from there.
|
1965 topps 2nd set is DONE!!!! Mantle is coming in Tuesdays mail………
1965 is a fun set. The 7th series highs are really cheap. The star cards aren’t too bad either. I used my extras when making this set so I had a lot already and a complete 5-7th series. When I build sets I like to make an extra 5th and 6th series and sometimes 7th series…..so September will be my rebuild project for them. 1969 topps set in next up for October!!! |

How to you collect the set -- raw or graded?
Raw.
:) |
Finally finished the 68 Topps Baseball set, receiving the Ryan and # 490 New Year’s Eve. Most of the stars range from poor/fair to very good condition; the rest would average vg/ex. I only need two cards to complete my 1967 1-533 run and two others to complete my 1969 baseball set. Apart from that, it’s a matter of completing the insert sets for 1967, 68, 70, and 71.
One final pursuit is the 1969 Topps Stamp Album set. I am missing the Bobby Tolan to finish my Reds album, plus I need the albums for the Tigers and Twins with all of the stamps inside. eBay is ridiculous in terms of pricing for these two albums and the Tolan hasn’t appeared as a single stamp as of yet. Happy New Year as well as collecting! Phil aka Tere 1071 |
I love a medium size challenge and started my 3rd 1965 set…….and only 75 more to go……..:)

Working on a 1965 set, willing to get any card in PSA/SGC 6 or higher at the right price, but want all the HOFers and key cards graded. Rest in roughly Ex-Mt raw. Also, I need duplicates of the White Sox cards, because I will keep all my graded examples but want a full set to offer up for sale at some point. So, 598 cards in the set, but I need 628.
-Have 355/598 different cards. -Have 358/628 accounting for White Sox duplicates. -I'm perfectly happy with the condition of 205/358. -I would upgrade 101/358 if the right opportunity came along, but they're pretty good. -52/358 need to be upgraded. Just picked up the Mays in SGC 6 though! Quick video on the progress and the Mays here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRV7a53YBTk. Keep it up everyone! Brad |

For some reason I decided I needed a complete run of Red Man sets 1952-1955
I've completed 1954 and with a dozen cards on their way to me I'm just 3 cards short of a 1953 set. I'm doing them without tabs and pretty open on condition as long as they look good I plan to have all the sets in one binder. Since they all look the same from the front I've printed out the advertising signs from each year and put them in to separate the years. I'll start tackling the 1955 set soon. I only have about five cards right now. |
1947-66 Exhibits including stat backs 481 out of 693
1965 Old London Coins PSA 7 or better 27 out of 40 |
I finished the 1972 Topps poster set. It's only 24 posters but kind of tough to find in decent condition between pin holes in the corners, wax stains, and the numerous folds. It is neat to have a set with 12 HOFers and also Pete Rose.

Congrats on the 72 Posters. How do you display them ? I had to get an Artist Portfolio binder due to the size

Finished my 1963 Topps baseball set today with the last card coming in the mail. At first I didn't really like the set with the bright colors but it slowly grew on me. Once I got the Rose rookie out of the way the set was fairly easy to complete but it was surprising that the 5th series was tougher to track down than the 6th or 7th series.
On to the 1964 set. I like the team names at the top of the 64 cards. |
Well…..4 cards shy of 3rd 1965 topps set…….so it’s just a waiting game for the right ones/deals to pop up…….
1969 topps is up next….love the pink/red ‘ish backs |
Finally got a great deal on a 1941 Play Ball Ted Williams from a Net54er.
That puts me just one card shy of a set I never thought I'd ever come close to finishing. Just need the DiMaggio now. All lower grade, but all the rest are present and accounted for. |
1967 Topps Baseball 1-533 Run Completed
Form eBay this week I purchased the #400 Clemente and #430 Rose to complete the 1-533 run for my 1967 Topps Baseball. I think the high numbers may be too expensive for me to complete the set, so I'll concentrate on finishing my 69 Topps Baseball set and my insert sets instead for the time being.
Updated want list (Numbers in parenthesis have been acquired, but waiting for delivery): 1967 Topps Insert Posters- I have Callison; Drysdale; Marichal; Torre; Campaneris; McDowell; and Pepitone. I'm collecting this in overall g-vg condition, no tears or writing/marks 1968 Topps Game Cards- I need: 1-10; 14; 15; 19; 27; 29; 30; 31. I am collecting this in vg or better condition, very light creases or surface wear is acceptable. 1969 Topps Baseball Team Stamps in the booklet- missing Twins g-vg condition is fine, no writing or tape 1970 Topps Insert Sets: 1970 Scratch Offs- They can be scratched off, but no creases and with both parts intact, vg condition. I have: Yaz; Spencer; Allen; Aparicio; Kaline; McDowell; Piniella; Powell; Stottlemyer; Wynn 1971 Topps Insert Sets: Coins: 18; 20; 48; 53; 54; 57; 58; (61); 67; 71; 73; 74; 76; 77; 80; 84; 85; (86); 87; 88; 98; 112; 117; 125; 139; 142 ( good condition is fine, but must have clean images.) 1971 Scratch Offs- I have: Bosman; Colbert 1973 Topps Baseball Team Checklists: I have a handful: Astros; Phillies; Mets; Royals; Brewers; Braves; Padres, all are marked but have clean fronts and borders.
