This is a 1900-1910's pennant. Common from this era to have three tassels made from silky ribbon and the oversized size. I don't believe this is spots related. Value? It depends on what it relates to

Seals Pennant and more
3 Attachment(s)
After some delay, I finally decided to frame my SF Seals Pennant. It is very large (with very long tassels) and it was difficult to find an appropriate backing that came in a large enough sheet. I liked the suede backing used in the Giants pennant (framed by a fellow board member before I bought it), but there were not many colors to choose from for such a large pennant. I decided on green for grass. I think it looks good. I took it to a shop to be framed and received an estimate of $800+, so I decided to build it online and ended up paying only about $160, even with UV protected non-glare etc... (although I had to get the suede backing elsewhere).
Just for Rob, I've also attached an image of a recent pick up that says Candlestick Park on it and is orange and black (it just is not baseball, and not a pennant). |
Love the Seals pennant, Marc!
and you can't go wrong with black + orange + Candlestick. :p |

Looks terrific! |
Thanks
Thanks, guys.

Anyone want to co-own this with me. ;)
Only $1,650. Hurry before it's gone!
It's beautiful and I'd love it but a little more than I'd like to pay. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psj2mfbgho.jpg |

Believe that batter image comes from the cover of the April 13, 1912 issue of The Saturday Evening Post, a painting by Robert Robinson. Here's my beat up copy. A 1915 Phillies pennant also uses the image (mine in my dreams).

Three pennants I have t seen before...
As seen at an antique show today.
The Yankees/Dodgers look like a repro, correct? The two Boston ones - I have no idea if they are real. They are priced as if they are rare. Any ideas? http://i1166.photobucket.com/albums/...psyii96tcq.jpg//s1166.photobucket.com/user/Jays9293/media/Mobile%20Uploads/3F5949DC-2F8A-4D93-8AF0-7F0BD940BAF3_zpshjwjs6pt.jpg.html]http://i1166.photobucket.com/albums/...pshjwjs6pt.jpg[/URL] |
Here's a first...
Kind of annoying when you don't get re-usable shipping materials with your pennant purchases. I'm on about a dozen pennant purchase streak in which I rec'd unorthodox shipping methods. This is my first "Saran Wrap Roll" technique. My most interesting was the Honey Nut Cheerios shipping box. Anyway...No real harm done. I picked this pennant up for $20 because I wanted to experiment with stain removal on a cheap white pennant. Anyone have any experience with this endeavor? I have some nice old pennants I'd like to clean up...if possible.

Some of my collection

Finally getting a chance to post on here. Went through this entire thread and some of the pics are outstanding!! Good to see some familiar names on here too. I'm Zach, if you see me at any of the shows at Shriner's Auditorium I'm usually carrying a bin of pennants with me. Can't wait to meet the other collectors on here, my focus is any New England sports team, any Massachusetts destination or any defunct team.
I see lots of football and baseball on here, but the spread of soccer, hockey and basketball seems to be lacking! I thought I would mix it up and post some of my nicer pieces from those sports. |
Cool pennants. Thanks for sharing. I went to that Shriners Auditorium show for the first time last year. Picked up three or four football pennants there. Was really happy to see the amount of football memorabilia there.
|
Did anyone else see the 1916 Red Sox Pennant that sold for $48000 on REA?
Is the pennant market coming back? |
It's coming back big-time.... but only for the ones that other people seem to consign. :o

Some recent pick ups...
Going to spread these out over several posts because I love attention. Hope you don't mind. Actually...Just not sure how many pics and words you can put in one post.
I'm mostly a football guy but have seen my pennant interests become a little more diverse recently. After spending my first four decades in CT, I moved to Houston last June and figured I should have an Astros pennant in my collection (Colts too but the seller is playing hard to get at the moment). I picked up this Astros pennant cheap. Nothing spectacular. You won't find it anywhere on Mark's wall. ;) But I liked the look and I found it interesting that the batter was swinging at a ball that appears to be rolling past his feet. What's this guys batting average? He swings at junk. There's also a ball-less version out there...not the player, pretty sure he's intact...but he's swinging at air...no ball to be found. I might pick that one up too. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psrwdzfe0r.jpg |
Another one...
Thought this was a cool addition to my small but growing baseball line up...
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psnirke8h7.jpg The prices on these next three just seemed right. A simple spine transplant on this Yankees pennant and it will be in pretty nice shape. Not bad for $35. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psxrmecsmg.jpg I'm getting into team photo pennants... http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psjkzvunvh.jpg Price was right... http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...pscne4ul4l.jpg |
And now football...
Paid too much for this one but had to have it. Love the political incorrectness. Not in the best condition...but when will I see a better one? Queue the wise guy who's going to immediately post a nicer one. :p
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psu7nsdm6e.jpg Didn't need this one...already have it...but for an $8 buy it now? Who could resist? http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...ps16ghiykx.jpg I love this style of pennant...picked up a nice NM State from Rick Haskins recently as well. Anyone have any other teams...Pro or College? http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...ps4mtj4poz.jpg And now for something completely different...My other passion is travel and New York City is one of my favorite places in the world. Picked this up as my first and only travel related pennant. Not much monetary value in it, but it reminds me of being there and that's priceless to me. I may add more... http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psvqnnc7ik.jpg |
"simple spine transplant"? Maybe for you, but I'm no Doctor.
The dude on the Astros pennant is a kindred spirit of Vlad Guerrero or Pablo Sandoval. :D |
AFL, NFL and MLB Logos
Logo questions...I associate seeing an AFL or NFL logo on a pennant with the year 1966 or maybe slightly later...coinciding with the announcement of the AFL/NFL merger. And I assume AFL team pennants without the AFL logo are older than those with. Are these accurate assumptions?
For the NFL...There are pennants with the NFL logo and pennants with the NFL logo and the date 1967. From a time period standpoint, whats the difference? I seem to recall seeing pennants from 1970's, with the 1967 NFL Logo on them, so I don't think 1967 is necessarily indicative of when the pennant was produced. Anyone know the differentiation between those with just the NFL logo and those with the logo plus 1967? For baseball, when I see the MLB logo on a pennant, I think 1970s. Is that accurate? Or did that start to appear in the late 60's? Thanks! |
Last post.........for now. :)
How can I tell if this is a real Keezer pennant or reproduction? I do have reproductions of this pennant and I can tell you this one is very different. Compared to the obvious reproduction, it's heavier. It's soft felt. And it's tassels are thicker and orange not black. There is no stamp on it.
I was recently on a 15 hour flight and had time to kill so I read through this entire thread...just because I had never done it and I figured I would see some great pics and learn quite a bit. I wasn't disappointed. I was, however, surprised to see Mark, a couple years back, posted a picture of this exact pennant, replete with orange tassels...as opposed to the black tassels which seem to be more common. Go ahead...Let me have it. :) http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psdrbrokvm.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psasnsfwjg.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...psdrbrokvm.jpg |

I love pennants. They are a little out of my price range, but I love looking at other collections.

I need to research what year this one is...
|
Rob....
Lots of great stuff there! Nice pickups... the '51 Double-scroll All Star Pennant is super rare, and nothing screams early '50s quite like that Navy Pennant. LOVE those graphics. As for the MLB logo first appearing on pennants.... it was the beginning of the end (in terms of quality and artistry). The year was most definitely 1969, as Rob noted. The NFL and AFL logos appeared earlier than that. It was mid-'60s... I want to say 1964-65, but may need to research that a bit further in order to pinpoint. Lastly.... for those of us who are old enough, that free-swinging Batter could also have been Manny Sanguillen (the best bad-ball hitter I can remember as a kid). He swung at everything, and was always the toughest guy in the league to walk, haha. He swung at even more bad balls than Vlad, but with a far lower success rate. |
Regarding that Black/Orange NYG Pennant.... most on ebay right now are repros. Its the softness of the felt that will be the giveaway.... not the color of the tassels.
It should have the good thick soft wool felt that is pliable and bendable (almost limp). If you can slide it into one of those rigid hard plastic pennant covers with relative ease.... it's likely the repro version. Also, the real ones are more of a muted burnt orange than a vibrant bright orange. Hope that helps! |

The NFL / AFL Logos on pennants date back to at least 1962....
Pictured below are two that I was able to find rather quickly.... * 1963 Detroit Lions Picture Pennant with the "NFL Shield" Logo * 1960-62 Raiders Pennant with Gold/Black colors (the Raiders switched to Silver/Black in 1963) There are quite a few other examples from the early 60s... but these two provide some concrete evidence. |
Thanks for the replies and info Mark!
I don't know how it's possible but I never noticed the logo on those earlier pennants. For the NFL logo, I always picture the single bar helmet pennants. Funny thing is I used to own that Raiders pennant and never made the connection to 1962 for the AFL logo. I guess I need to spend more time looking at my own pennants. I might learn something. I'm pretty convinced my Giants pennant is the real deal. It passes all the tests and I forgot to mention it is a different shade of orange than the repros I have. |

Now that's the thick felt and "burnt orange" color I tried to describe. I can tell by the "grainy" texture of the felt, that one is good! |

Welcome Erik...
Great stuff... your NY Giants pennant is interesting to me. I have never seen it with white felt and red graphics. Normally it's the reverse (white on red). Very cool  |

Have any of you ever seen this? Picked these up today. Yes, that's printed tape on the NFC one denoting a location change.

^^^^ Those are cool. 1977 apparently.
I have bleached pennants like your NFC (no kidding!) with great success. |

Those are all very nice pennants and for the most part in great condition. Buy what you think is cool and affordable. It's easy to get caught up in Mark's collection, but not as easy to go up against. BTW, you are missing a Minneapolis Millers (if you consider Mpls the same as Minnesota) baseball pennant which are occasionally available, but sometimes in the $100 plus range in good shape. Those are mainly from the 50's and earlier though. |
Millers pennant

Here is a Millers pennant.

Really like the white Giants pennant. I have the reverse version which Mark describes.
Cool Pro Bowl Pennants. I have the NFC one (without Seattle note). It was sold as a 1972 Pro Bowl Pennant, though not sure how one would know that that unless they bought it at the game. The Pro Bowl was in L.A. for 2+ decades. Mine is a softer felt than I would expect for 1972. My other pennants of that era are stiffer than this...ie the 1967 single bar pennants. With no date on it, no way to know for sure. Did some Pro Bowl research when I picked it up and being a Rams fan, was particularly interested in the 1969 game. Roman Gabriel was offensive MVP and Merlin Olsen was defensive MVP. The final score: 10-7 That was back when it was still a football game and fun to watch...though I was only 2....and not the unwatchable "exhibition" it's become today...with 62 to 35 final scores designed to attract kids, women and lukewarm football fans. |

Been experimenting with OxiClean (of Billy Mays fame) and thus far the results have been humorous. If you want to know how to turn a 1950's travel pennant into a completely blank pennant PM me. Hoping to have some time over the long weekend to experiment some more. |
Thanks for the warm welcome, guys! Rob, it's awesome you started this thread! You have some amazing stuff!
So, I bought Mike Egner's guide - does he participate here and do people send him pictures of pennants that aren't listed? Any idea if a hockey, basketball or collegiant guide is on the horizon? Mark, your collection is bonkers! My head was spinning looking at your photos. Jason/Marc, Thanks for the comment on the Millers. Yes, I would like to add one (I have a St Paul Saints one), but seems to be very rare and they don't give them away...:). About 6 years ago I was outbid on a Minneapolis Mighty Millers Hockey Club pennant. In hindsight I wish I would have gone much higher (I guess we all say that when we miss out). My friend has a MN fighting pike one..:but he's got a tight grip on it! If you see any other MN team not listed, I'm game! |

Chargers Football Pennant?
1 Attachment(s)
Football guys,
Have you seen this pennant and is it LA/SD Chargers? I cannot find anything resembling it in terms of design/era... |
Great collection, Stephen! Displays very well!
|
Quote:
|
I also doubt that it's the pro football Chargers. The logo (while pretty cool) is not one that's ever been associated with the team and the colors are off. Also, if it was ever sold at stadiums, other examples would likely have surfaced.
Very nifty vintage pennant though! |
As Mark pointed out...Wrong logo, wrong colors for the AFL/NFL Chargers.
In one of my many pennant google searches, I came across the site of a guy who owns pretty much every vintage LA/San Diego Chargers pennant. There are none that resemble this one. Don't think it's college football either. None of the Chargers teams out there match those colors. Might not be football at all. |
Completely agree....
And the final strike against this pennant representing LA/San Diego is its 3/4 size. Nearly all 3/4 size football pennants pre-date the AFL. They simply do not exist, with the lone exception being a series from the mid-late 1960s (all of which feature the NFL Shield Logo). But alas.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/332248073784...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT |
Wow, thank you everyone. I agree, it likely is not NFL. I also just received a response from Pete (Chargers pennant expert referenced) and he was very responsive and also did not think it was NFL/AFL. Side note - I referred him to this group for participation generally :)
The only thing I found based on colors and name was perhaps it was for Georgia Highlands College (http://ghcchargers.com/wp-content/up...n3XYAEKufu.jpg). Regardless - always fun to find, research and commiserate with passionate experts! Is it 5:00 yet??? |
