Nice card Dave. I couldn't afford to go NM on the early ones either. A centered NM 52 would be awesome though.

Not as awesome as driving around in a new Mercedes with a PSA 1 52 Topps in your pocket though.

Ha not so sure about that. Let's say you pick up that S63 coupe (about the same value). A nice car, but in a couple years of years you'll lose half of your "investment", or more. I'll take the NM Mantle, though both are out of my league.

This one arrived today. An average grade card for us average collectors. Nice eye appeal though.

TUM301 05-12-2017 11:44 AM

Jesse, there`s NOTHING average about that Bowman Mantle sir ! Great pickup and addition to your collection. Congrtas and enjoy it.

pokerplyr80 05-12-2017 01:52 PM

Thanks I'm very happy with it. The average card for average collectors comment is in response to one in another thread.

Reggie, Can you measure that card accurately? I have one that the grading company insists has been trimmed(!). Mine is wider than 2.5", but shorter than 3.5". I'm trying to get a standard deviation of the 58 Mantle dimensions. His location on the printing sheet suggests that he could always be wider (being on the end of a row), but that any miscut vertically could always make a short 3.5" height (being in the middle of the sheet vertically he could be cut short at top and bottom). Thanks!

Below my Mantle's that just arrived back from Uncle Psa.

I haven't been following them lately, but when I first seen it, I thought likely over $200K.

20 something minutes to go, I think it may just reach that, maybe even over?

Edit: Very surprised it did not go higher, and even more surprised there were no snipe or closing time bids?

Awww. I'm so sorry. After I take a photo of my card in a one touch, it goes in a top loader & penny sleeve, then gets sealed in a "perfect fit sleeve" with clear postal tape on the back. So sorry. :(

I do remember the card being slightly "diamond cut" after cracking it out of the PSA case. You can see it a bit in my one touch photo. The long cut is slanted a little to the left.

Hey Kris! Thanks for sharing your beautiful Dormand Postcard of Mickey. I have always loved Dormands, ever since I sent away for a starter group from Wholesale Cards Co. out of New York / New Jersey in about 1969. Bruce Yeko included this version of Mickey Mantle with the group. Personally, I have always favored this pose. Think of it this way, bro. At the time Louis Dormand first issued this postcard, 1953-54, and for many, many years afterwards, collectors did not have much of anything to preserve their condition.

They would do whatever came to mind:

1. Pin it, tack it, nail it to their bedroom wall.

2. Tape it to their bedroom wall.

3. Tape it, or glue it, into a scrapbook, or perhaps use those black art corners to CAREFULLY mount it in their scrapbook.

4. Since Dormands were over-sized, as compared to mainstream bubble gum cards, you could not store them easily with your gum cards. So, if you had several Dormands, you wrapped them in rubber bands. In so doing, you gave them several "good" notches on their sides, thus giving their condition a notch or two below mint. In addition to the notching from a tight rubber band, a wrapped bunch of Dormands would be jammed in the back of a shoe box, or on top. With all the handling and jostling, corners would get bumped all the time, as a pinball machine in play, "ding, ding, ding..." Instead of adding points to your total, the dings in essence were deducting points from its future PSA grade!

5. You might simply place the card on your dresser, as a boys' version of a Monet painting. Let's hope it didn't get handled too much when it was shown to friends who wanted to admire it more closely. The card might catch on something when it was picked up, or put down. Catch on?

6. IF they were displayed on a wall, a problem might begin to attack it, without even physically touching it. Daylight. Specifically, the ultraviolet rays of the sun would start to work on it, depending upon the vicinity of where it was placed, in relation to the sun's rays. If it got a "good" dose of sun on a daily basis, after a few months, the rich colors would begin to fade. Call it cardboard color ker-blammo. Permanent damage. Permanent regret.

The perils of the over-sized card. These are among the facets of distinction I bring out in my E-book on a CD, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN. If you think I'm just trying to get you to buy my book, I already found this never works; after a year's time with just 28 sales, I concluded most collectors are either too much of a lardhead to appreciate a good hobby book when they see it, or too much of a cursed cheapskate.

Let's just say I am trying to get you to appreciate the fact your elegant Mickey Mantle postcard is in pretty nice shape, all things considered.

Congratulations, Kris. Be happy!;)

Take care. ----Brian Powell

Thanks! I've been trying to collect a Mantle card between 1951 to 1960. I've got every single one but a 1952... and I've come to the conclusion that Bowman will be the only option for that year. The 1952 Topps is waaaaaay out of my price range and it's only going up. :(

You have some nice Mantles, Reggie, and I am particularly envious of your 51 Bowman that your wife has purchased for you. Very nice card!

Myself, I have a different story. I would like more Mantles, (or some of the ones you currently own) than what I currently have, but unfortunately, most of them are out of my price range too. But thankfully I already have a 52, albeit, a rough one, that my Father gave me, so I can't complain.

Puckettfan 06-06-2017 07:04 PM

Brian,

Wow, thanks for the context on the Dormand. Excellent background information. I am very happy to have found this example for a good price. I, like you, really like the pose and format. That stance is missing from most of his standard issues.

That is simply amazing! I love hearing stories about parents passing down valuable cards to their children.. especially a 52 Topps Mantle! Did your father pull that from an actual pack?

Kris

Kris, you're more than welcome. I had fun writing it!

You might wish to have PSA grade your Dormand Mick. Regardless of what number winds up on the cert, they use a nice thick, heavy holder for these. I know because I took the plunge and bought a graded specimen of this card earlier this year. I love it. My point is that with your Dormand being in a PSA holder, it is well-protected. The only potential problem to avoid is the aforementioned display where sunlight strikes it.

My only regret was that 25 years ago I sold my near set. I know many of the postcards would have graded high. However, the bulk of my regret is that I simply miss them---they are flat out over the top beautiful cards. I did save a couple I could not bear to part with---Roy Campanella and Johnny Mize. I had wanted the Mize for years, before he was finally elected to the BBHOF. He seems to be among the major tough ones to find. As for Campy, IMHO the Dormand PC is Roy Campanella's finest card, along with his 1953 Stahl-Meyer Franks.

I'm gettin' verbose; have a great day friend. ---Brian Powell

Me, too!! Congratulations, Irv. Between your cache of nice vintage Bee Hives and the '52 Topps Mickey Mantle, your Dad left you some real treasures.

Say, take the time to ask your father how he came to get the '52 Topps Mick. Write it up as a story for all of us. A card passed down from a dad is something any of us (except those who hate it when anyone has something nice happen to them) would appreciate hearing about.:)

I have a treasured story of how I got a '52 Topps Mantle through my widowed mother. Sadly, I chose to sell it to help raise money for a down payment on a house. Good reason, but......:(

Take care, pal. ----Brian Powell
